Herefishie
I'm setting up a new aquarium and I ordered a sponge filter from Cory. I can't seem to find any definitive answer about where to place it. I'm setting up one of those bookshelf style aquariums and I wonder if I should place it in the corner or in the center since it is much wider than it is tall. Thanks for any advice. MN-AQUARIST
Generally speaking it won't matter much where you put it. It's possible that you will get some "dead spots" of low flow but you can adjust airflow and position as needed. In my tanks with just sponge filters I expect to get some detritus buildup so I don't worry a lot about it.
Odd Duck
If you have one of those very long bookshelf aquarium, you might consider putting one on each end to reduce risk of dead spots. Smaller bookshelf should be OK with a single filter.

Thanks for the advice about possibly using two if necessary. I did get a pump that has two outlets so there is that option which is good.

I would consider that long and I would use 2 filters myself, but I’m a bit of a nut for overfiltration as a bit of insurance.
anewbie
If the aquarium has decent flow it shouldn't matter; my personal style is to use two filters one on each back corner - but my aquariums end up with decent flow for various reasons. If the aquarium has very little flow then maybe closer to the middle. 1
BlackCrappieLover
Like others are saying I like to have two sponge filters on each end. I did this for my 20 high and again for my 20 long and it works great for me! I also use the second sponge filter as a backup or in my quarantine tub so I think having a second filter running comes in handy personally. Hope you figure out what's right for you! 🤗 1
Herefishie
This tank is 35 inches long but it's not deep at all and it's only 12 gallons. I think I will set it up with the one that I have from Cory and I can easily add another if I don't feel like it's cutting it. You guys are so helpful. Good idea. I just ordered a second sponge filter from Cory. I also ordered some of the black tubing because I'm planning to put black backing on the back of the aquarium. 😀

It stays soft and pliable-some of the other black tubing I have gets stiff and brittle.
Galabar
You should see fairly quickly if you get a build up of mulm on the gravel. If so, add another filter or a power head to move water around.
