Jurrian Hering
After months of deliberation and preparation I have decided to try my hand and breeding some German Blue Rams. My goal is less to pump out as many as possible and more to have a good looking tank that will also produce fry. Just picked up a group of 5 from my LFS to try and get a pair or two out of them. It looks like I got 1M and 4F so I may go try and get another male. Here’s a pic of them I’m QT. They are currently getting the med trio. And I’m pretty sure they have some form of internal parasite because they have long stringy white poop. However they are all looking pretty happy and healthy otherwise and pretty active. The winning pair will get move into a 40 breeder I set up last month. The tank currently has a large population of Malaysian trumpet snails and cull cherry shrimp. (The shrimp will be a nice live food for them ha!). Here’s a pic of the tank: The tank has a host of random plants. All sorts of crypts, swords, anubias, and various grasses like Val. Will probably add some dither fish of some sort down the line. Haven’t decided as of yet which would be best. My water conditions are pH: 7.4 GH: 200 KH: 150 Temp: 79 Going to document the progress here and any and all feedback is much appreciated! I recommend to keep that temperature at least in the 80s I recommend 82, I keep that temp in my tanks with rams and they do perfectly fine. I recommend keeping the group all together in the tank, this way the other rams can be used as dither. To really have good hatch rates I recommend to have an rodi to lower that hardness, because rams will do okay, not thrive, but the eggs will most likely not hatch. Can't wait to see how they'll look after a few weeks. What are you gonna feed them?

In QT they are at 82 right now so I’ll definitely push the main tank up a bit when they get in there! With the others being in as dithers do you think it could be a problem with aggression or due to the larger volume of water it should be fine? On 1/27/2023 at 10:04 AM, knee said: Goodluck! I want to try my hand at live BBS but just haven’t pulled the trigger on the supplies yet haha.
Guppysnail
Congratulations! I love my GBR. Such fun and personable fish. I have my first free swimming batch of fry that just started eating tiny liveBBS. They are adorable and look like itty bitty pea puffers right now. I hope you are as delighted by them as I am. Stringy white poo usually happens after fasting. They still shed the intestinal lining like normal there is just no food to fill it up.

Normally when trying to breed rams, you keep either an extra male or female because rams tend to be very aggressive during spawning even the pairs can fight, so the reason why you add an extra ram is to place that aggression on something else rather then the pairs fighting. I do that with my midnight rams.

Jurrian Hering
Week and half or so of them in QT and 4 of them are doing great! The one male unfortunately has some weird fin fungus issue so I’ve treated again with the med trio. It’s been getting better the last few days so that’s a plus. Safe to say they are real tired of being in a 10g haha they chase each other around quite often. Hopefully once this clears up I can move them in soon! Jurrian Hering
Apparently a pair decided to lay eggs three days before they are out of QT! Slight issue with them doing this now they are bulling the others due to them being in a small QT tank. Will probably move em over sooner than planned and pull the eggs to avoid as much aggression as possible.
Theplatymaster
@Jurrian Hering has long as there are no visible symptoms physically or behaviorally it should be safe to move the rams out.

Yea I wanted to have em out about a week or two ago but one of them had some weird fungus growing on it’s fins so I had to hit them with another round of the med trio. Finished that second treatment three days ago and they all look good so it’s time for them to move out.
