Fish Folk
Male struck a pose out front today. I believe there are eggs somewhere in here already… My goal is to let the algae build up generously — that’s what they lay eggs in. NANFA article says eggs hatch in 3x days. Fry are impossible to find. _____ 3
Fish Folk
Three Females… The non-dominant male “hiding” — can’t hide the blue fin fringes… I haven’t seen fry yet, but typically fry of Elassoma are _impossible_ to spot until several weeks old. It’s possible they’re not breeding just yet until temperature gets up past 70°-F. Currently they’re at 68°-F. 3
nabokovfan87
How is this tank doing? How has the sunfish been for you? I read more and it always seems there's a lot for me to learn. It's unfortunate the lifespan on these species are so brief! As always, thank you for the detailed info. Much appreciated.

I moved them outside. Got a cloud of Endlers in the tank now. Brought a few E. gilberti fry indoors the other night… 3 1

They seem so different, and I'm sure it's to help hide as they are younger while they grow up and gain their patterning. It's also interesting in the adults that the females stay lighters, potentially for the same reason. I definitely need to work on gaining some knowledge and care skills with smaller fish. Using powdered foods even has been an enlightening change for me.
Fish Folk
I’m very pleased with today’s update on this thread. Summer is cooling off fast, so today I tore down all 3x outdoor water gardens (tubs… mini-ponds… whatever). It was a long, thankless job. The last of the three was the 14-gal Elassoma gilberti tub. I had started off with about a dozen brooders. Today, I worked through the muck and mud to pull fry… After hours of careful work, I successfully pulled 80x fry, and 5x adult brooders… I fed them all live BBS. Here’s fry eating… And here is a trio of adults eating… So if you’re dying to get into Elassoma gilberti, or know someone who is, let me know! Guppysnail
I would call this a major success. Congratulations. 🎉 I’ve wanted these so bad for years. Now you have them and circumstances dictate I can’t add them right now. 😭. I hope you keep some so you will have another batch next year.

Just Java moss and got grass? Are you dosing farts? Just a few little fish don't seem like they would provide enough nitrogen for that much growth

Two small sponge filters. No ferts. 4x adult E. gilberti brooders. That’s it. Edited September 13 by Fish Folk
Fish Folk
This old A-bid auction post for a colony of Elassoma gilberti absolutely cracks me up. I would totally over-communicate like this... https://aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/closed.cgi?view_archive_item&fwusnative1533653404 In other news, I cannot get my E. gilberti fellas to pose in good lighting. Here's a few bad photos 😂 1
