TomO
I have spider wood that leaches tannins into the water. Can I paint the wood to minimize the leaching? And if so, what kind of paint. Also while I’m on the subject of paint. What kind of paint can I use for the back and side of my 75 gallon? I can’t paint it in the garage since it’s in the 30’s now most days. Ulrum
I'm not an expert on this, but I read somewhere that if you boil the wood for a while, you can get a lot of the tannins out and reduce the leeching. Paint might work. Again, not sure, but on the chance that it chips and breaks off, you'll be stuck with both the potential for toxicity from the paint, AND you'll be back to square one on the tannins leeching. Streetwise
If you have hard water, tannins are good. I use wood in every tank, and the tannin color stain is natural.
TomO
I have very hard water. Will I be able to water change the tannins out of the water? I’m used to crystal clear tanks.

I’m used to crystal clear tanks. Try adding some charcoal to clear it up and between that and water changes you’ll reduce the tannins pretty quickly. Spider wood doesn’t seem to have as long lasting a tannin does from what I’ve experienced.
Alexa
In terms of painting the outside of the tank, acrylic paint is a good choice... it’s water based and pretty cheap.
