CJs Aquatics
Val does better for me with the tabs or in my case (nutrient rich substrate) then it does with the liquid ferts. Tips would be they can’t get too much light in my opinion unless you notice them burning from it, and time. It takes a second for them to get started but once they do they are off to the races. There are experiments that can be done to see which grows it most effective for you however personally if you are root feeding, and water column feeding and have adequate light I honestly think they will flourish given enough time to set. Fish Folk
How long have you had it? How deep is the aquarium? / What size is the tank? How large was your Valisneria when you got it? What sort of light, and how long a photoperiod are you running? What sort of substrate? My first thought… Rome wasn’t built in a day. Here are a few “then vs. now” photos… Feb. 8, 2021… Same tank, Apr. 27, 2022… Another tank… June 3, 2022… Same tank, photo just taken today (Nov. 15, 2022)… Valisneria will grow long, and stretch across your aquarium surface like this… It puts out runners, and multiplies like this… I do occasionally put a root tab beneath each of the largest stalk-groups. But in time, with enough bio load / stocking, you ought to get a good fertile substrate going. Mine do best in a planted substrate like Eco Complete or Activ Flora. Black Diamond Blasting Sand… not so well…

The Arthritic Aquarist
@Theplatymaster I bought some Val in late May. It took a good 4 to 5 months before it really started to do anything. Recommend root tabs, at least early on. Medium to Medium-Low lighting seems to work best in my tank (may vary depending on your lighting source). Mine is now growing tall --would only grow to about 3 or 4 inches for the first few months. It's also be reproducing quite a bit. Started with three plants and now have many times that. So patience and perseverence seem to be key.
Kurt Brutting
@Fish Folk I love your aquariums, you have such beautiful Vallisneria! It’s my favorite plant. I recently purchased some Val Spiralis Leopard from Etsy and it’s super red and long. I’m stoked to get this plant thriving. I grow Val in all my aquariums and I have success in low light or high, root tabs or aqua-soil. The thing for me with these plants is time.
Tanked
My working hypothesis for the moment is that the quality of the light is key. My Italian Val. began growing and putting out runners in about three weeks. One year later, the Val has migrated to the front of the planted tank where it receives some direct sunlight each morning. The back of the tank is barren again. The runners are quite short, but healthy looking. This tank gets six to eight hours of artificial light daily, and the tank is quite bright to the eye, but the Val doesn't seem to like it. Your Glofish light might not be quite strong enough. You could bump the light up to 14-15 hrs. while waiting for the Val to get busy. A single Val runner moved to my 10 gal. project tank, has tripled its height, but that has taken two months. The project tank is lit by a flashlight for 14 hrs. a day. The lighting in the project tank is also much closer to daylight
