Fish Folk
One of my favorite things! Rainbow shiners fired up, spawning. I saw them colored up, grabbed this empty glass cube, ran outside to toss in a few small landscaping stones, and minutes later… It’s true — they’re eating a lot of eggs. But I’ll have a little batch ready to roll soon… 4
AquaHobbyist123
Nice! Hope to start keeping/breeding some NANF species myself sometime in the near future, and Rainbow Shiners are one of my favorites. 1
Fish Folk
(1) Take out stone tray. (2) Remove stones to reveal eggs on bottom. (3) Pour eggs into hatching tray with airstone. (4) Add M. Blue

AquaHobbyist123
That seems like an even larger number of eggs when you realize there are only 2 females. Are they seasonal spawners?

Are they seasonal spawners? Once mature, and if properly fed on foods with enough fatty-acids, they'll spawn every two weeks. I do not catch and pull each time. And sometimes, I mess up and the eggs do not hatch. This aquarium is at my office. Today, I took them home on break from work and set them up to hatch out in a floating flow-through. MAC
What size/age do the start getting into spawning mode? I managed to get a nice group a few months back but they were tiny little buggers. They've grown nicely and are all about an inch and a half now so I figure I still have a little ways to go. Really excited to see these fish mature.

Really excited to see these fish mature. In my view, they need a solid year or more. It is crucial that they’re fed well on a variety of foods to help them produce roe & milt.
