Nabaliss
Hi, does this look like a honey gourami Trichogaster chuna? I ordered 4 of these fish, the photo is from the listing & they're labeled as "Honey Sunset Gourami". I know they get confused with Thick Lipped Gourami Trichogaster labiosa. Hoping that's not the case here because I already have 1 honey that I wanted to get companions for. Thank you! Nabaliss
My fish just arrived, 3 out of 4 made it. I'm acclimating them now. They don't look like the seller's photo or like my honey gourami. Any more opinions?
laritheloud
This isn't a honey gourami. This is trichogaster labiosa, a Sunset Thicklipped Gourami. Nice fish, but a little bit larger, a little bit feistier (about the same level as a pearl gourami in terms of feistiness, maybe a little less), and definitely a different species than Trichogaster Chuna/Honey Gouramis. 2
jwcarlson
Now wondering if mine is also not a honey gourami... Not always so sad looking, but I flipped the lights on and he (?) isn't happy 😄 Edited January 29, 2022 by jwcarlson 1
Nabaliss
Oh, darn! Ok, thank you. My lone honey is from Aquarium Co-op, I should have made the drive back down there. Thick Lipped is what's sold in Petco & PetSmart near me, but they actually label them correctly. On 1/28/2022 at 4:53 PM, laritheloud said: This isn't a honey gourami. My male has very impressive fin extensions and an extremely dark-colored body.
Nabaliss
I wrote to the seller, they just responded with "they are not Labiosa". Very cute & friendly fish, just not what I wanted. I set up a tank for them last night, it's only a 10g (they were supposed to go in one of my 40g breeders), but they're really young & small so they'll be fine until I decide what to do. This is the 40b the new "honeys" were supposed to go in. 2
Nabaliss
Another 40b, they could possibly go in here, but I have a boss Betta in it. Don't think labiosas will be compatible with her/him?

Don't think labiosas will be compatible with her/him? I..... think putting them with a betta is extremely risky, sadly. I'm so sorry you've been put in this position. They sound quite ignorant if they think this species is chuna and not labiosa -- chuna looks completely distinct from these guys. It's possible that your labiosas will get along with your honey. They are more likely to get along with the true honey gourami than they are with the betta. You can trial it out while you figure out if that'll be their permanent home. I originally had my thicklip in with my honey gouramis, and I only moved her to a 55 gallon with other labiosas because she was bullying my male honey with a lot of chasing. It took months to get to that point, and she never bothered my female honeys. 2
Nabaliss
@laritheloud there's a Betta in the 40b tank with the honey, too! I have extra 5g & 10g tanks that I can move Bettas to, but I'm trying to lesson my maintenance by only having the two 40b tanks & one 5g cherry shrimp tank. I somehow always end up with more tanks. I sell one and get 3 more haha! Husband doesn't believe me that I'm trying to downsize (thankfully he doesn't really care, but teases me about it). Nabaliss
She's huge, and active, way too big for a 5g or 10g.
Nabaliss
@laritheloud I went to Aquarium Co-op yesterday, got 3 "real" Honeys. Here's some pics of my original Honey checking out her (?) new friends. Can you tell the sex of any of them? I think my original is female, but not at all sure.
laritheloud
She's definitely female @Nabaliss! Generally the sweet-tempered ones that potter around the tank nibbling on plants/roots for microfauna are female. She also has the belly and the paler color of females, and I believe I see orange at the top rim of her dorsal fin. What a cutie! Your new batch appears to be all female, too. You might have one male but I'm not 100% sure from the in-bag photos -- all the orange on the top fins makes me think all female. You'll have a very peaceful tank with all ladies and no male to harass them. 🤣 Congrats on filling out your honey gourami group!

So happy to have these new sweet cuties. I bumped up my glowlight tetras to 18, too, so lots of peaceful activity in this tank! The 3 eBay Labiosas are still in quarantine, I'll probably keep them in there for 4wks before I add them to my other 40g. They don't seem especially healthy. Not eating well, stringy poo, 2 of them always hiding. Hoping it's just the stress of being shipped.

laritheloud
Fortunately @jwcarlson I haven't really seen problems even in my male-dominated group. I notice sparring around feeding time and a mildly torn fin or two and that's it. They usually hang out pretty peacefully, especially at night when they're resting. Hope it's the same for you!

He's in a community tank. With tetras and corydoras. And cherry shrimp. They all seem to get along pretty well. He seems to sleep lodged into the middle of the big floating pile of water sprite. He'll eat flakes out of my daughter's fingers and sometimes tolerate being "pet" (poked at) when he's cruising around.
