Mystery snail shell growth is different

Hi everyone. So I know mystery snails need calcium for shell growth, and I’ve provided that. I’ve been doing the miracle shells since I got him about 3 months ago.

Since that time he’s grown over twice as large. You can see in the pics the difference in the color from when I got him to how much he’s grown up to now.

The thing is, his shell that has grown was darker than now. It was never as dark as when I got him, but it was definitely darker.  Maybe a week ago I noticed all of his growth since I got him has become lighter.

If it’s a nutrient deficiency, why doesn’t his original shell also get lighter?

What other nutrients am I missing?

It means he is getting fed good and growing faster than when at lfs. No worries at all. The new growth will darken as time goes on. Great job keeping him happy that he is growing well. If you don’t already they love veggies and fresh veggies provide the correct vitamins they need. Green beans are a favorite for all mine. I steam slightly or you can use no salt added canned but they are messy. You can branch as well.

PS welcome to the forum 😁

Oh they do need algae wafers too not just leftovers from fish.

Oh my goodness! Thanks for the reassurance! I’ve been feeding him little pieces of algae wafers every day since I got him, since I knew he wouldn’t have enough vegetable nutrition from the fish’s good.

In fact the pics I took are when he zeroed in on the algae wafer piece. You can see it as the bright green line in the 2nd pic.

Some days I think I’ve trained him to go where I drop the piece of algae wafer, other days I wonder why he went the opposite direction. 😄

Thanks for the advice on actual real veggies. I’m gonna try out some steamed green beans for him and see how it goes.

Mine eat out of a glass dish. It keeps the wafers from dissolving in the substrate 😁509727E0-FEBA-4496-9904-70235E3ECF69.jpeg.89f62cef317bd5637f646efdb81fbaa5.jpeg94ACC509-88F1-459B-8F6B-9815031AB35F.jpeg.f28835c7298d4483d79102b930720ff4.jpeg6B159DC1-9B81-4DE1-A720-1E8C4DE8AC4B.jpeg.9ed6fc8b5065026a7eb066e17c9e4da5.jpeg

Great idea!

Will this also work with nerites?

Mine like to destroy the tank, and also like to digest their food while attaching to the lid and the tank at the same time so I can't safely open with out risking injuring them 🤦‍♂️

No unfortunately my nerite does his thing. I think he chomps green beans occasionally by odd marks on the leftover bean but I’m never sure. I have never seen him in the dish. I sprinkle veggie gran pellets around wherever he falls asleep. He is like a kid and goes until he is just out of energy and stops. 🥰

Whelp, darn.

At least I can add an extra hour of light and keep the algae growth sufficient.
