Mystery Platy Illness

Hi all,

Has anybody here got any idea what these protrusions are on my mickey mouse platy. The best guess I could find by googling was anchor worm but they don’t look to be the same shape.

Not sure if its anchor worms. Never dealt with them before. If something appears to be hanging on / wiggling out of the fish, then quite possibly yes. Do you have a quarantine tank?

I do have a spare QT tank, I’ll likely set it up over the weekend for him. Any idea on what meds to use, I struggle with finding Uk equivalent to the trio.

Hmmm I don't think that looks like worms. Does it look more like scales/skin peeling off or excess slime coat?

For anchor worms you can treat with ehsa ndx the active ingredient is lavmasole that if your sure  that  it's parasties it difficult to tell off the pictures

I am not at all sure what it is so I’m hesitant to drop random meds in in case it makes things worse. 
Interestingly the two growths protruding from his forehead yesterday appear to have gone. But there are still white areas that seam to be combing from below the scales.

Perhaps you can upload a few more photographs. That may help us assess with you. My first guess by the photos was hole in head disease. But you say that there is a protrusion? Not a pit / hole?

It looks like excess slime coat production/mucus to promote healing. So that, I think, would point to some sort of wound/laceration on the head...

Based on my own recent experiences, I would say that you test your water and check for changes, vacuum out mulm, ensure good water flow, and then do a bog water change. if you need to address any livebearer water issues such as low gh, kh, or ph do that and watch to see if anything changes with all your fish. All this can be done with no meds or knowledge of what it is. It may not go away magically but it will make treatment more effective.

Thanks everyone, I’m giving the tank a good clean tomorrow and I’ll keep an eye on parameters over the next couple of weeks. If it is some slime coat/ him healing himself It sounds like we should be okay.
