  1. I've never used a spawning mop before but I made a few this morning (thanks to the aquarium coop DIY Spawning Mop article)Aesthetically I just really like the scratch pad mops more than the yarn ones and I was thinking of using those. I know the scratch pad mops are intended for rice fish, but I was wondering if people have had success with scratch pad mops with other species.
  2. plenty of native fish would find 60 degrees quite comfy. rainbow shiners darters topminnows
  3. Hatched some baby brine shrimp to feed my Blackstripe Topminnows.
  4. Tied some plant trimmings to wire mesh, going to tile em on top of substrate and see if they end up carpeting or failing.
  5. What have I bred: cherry shrimp, but not many, unintentionally bred piles of pest snails and intentionally setup a scud tank and bred them as a food source. what I’m tired of breeding: nothing yet, I’m still new so more the merrier what I want to breed: more scuds (such a great food source) wild caught blackstripe topminnows, wild caught golden crayfish, and my store bought White Cloud Mountain minnows and emerald eye rasboras
  6. Went to a local creek and caught 7 Blackstripe Topminnows, I now have 12 total, going to disperse them amongst two different species only tanks and give it a go at breeding.
  7. @Minanora, out of curiosity, approximately how long did it take your shrimp to hatch ? Also thank you for sharing your success, this gives me hope to try it.
  8. My cherry shrimp was carrying eggs this morning but seemed to have dropped em. I’ve heard they won’t hatch when dropped and was thinking about putting em in a bubbling brine shrimp hatching device with clean water.
  9. While feeding my fish I noticed a red cherry shrimp full of eggs
  10. thank you all for the feedback. I feel way more assured after reading this feedback and I will be patient
  11. ive got one tank with Johnny darters that im trying to breed, and another tank with fathead minnows that id also like to try and breed. both tanks are established, have plenty of caves and I feed frozen and live food only.
  12. Hi all! I've got some well established planted tanks that I test monthly and never needs any maintenance other than topping off evaporated water. My question is, do I still need to frequently change water to promote fish to breed even if my water quality is good?
  13. 3 month update pics on the aquarium grass seed and the stones covered in terrestrial moss that I added to my nano aquarium.
  14. How big will the central stone rollers get? Amal enough to stay in a 40 breeder their whole lives or do you foresee them being moved?
  15. Failure All but one female guppy have died. I believe the culprit was wasting disease because the already skinny males kept getting skinnier and skinner despite daily feedings. Admittedly I did not quarantine. The lone surviving female was place in an outdoor 40gallon tub pond that I stocked with 12 white cloud minnows (golden variety). If she survives and makes a bunch of babies I’ll build a tank and give guppies another shot.
  16. Tiana that is awesome! I just signed up and posted my unknown plant there. thanks!
  17. oh my gosh, thank you SO MUCH for that link. I am going to download all of those resources and make binders for myself. So much useful information!
  18. Went out to collect scuds for my darter tank, instead I found a bunch of water boatman I gathered and tossed in my darter tank—they love chasing live bugs.
  19. went to a nearby creek looking for wilds scuds for my darter tank. Found this big guy, too big for the darters to eat but not too big to eat up debris and help clean the tank.
  20. This is your FIRST?! This is gorgeous! Looks like something an aquascaper would do.
  21. I'm having deja vu. I'm new to the aquarium hobby, prior to this I used to be big into stamp collecting hobby and literally every forum and online group had a "what's killing our hobby" post popup every other day.
  22. Hi, I live in Iowa and found some of these heavily rooted plants in a nearby creek. I'm still looking to get my hands on a reference book or reference website or reference app, but until then I thought I'd see if any of you nerms can help. Anyone know what this is?
  23. Thats a GORGEOUS chunky darter! I also caught a native darter but he was just a little guy.
  24. Caught these all with ice-fishing jigs and small pieces of a red worm. I have no idea if these are common shiners, fathead minnows, etc., etc., but they seem to be the same species. I made a post on the NANFA forums so hopefully someone there can help. In the meantime, feeding should be easy since I know that eat live red worms 😄
  25. Two week update, no sign of death. I do have a slight tannin-color in the water now, but im not sure if that's from the seeds or me disturbing the substrate recently. More is floating because I rehoused my darters and disturbed some of the plants in the process of netting them. I drop in some some seachem flourish fertilizer and seachem nitrogen once a week although im sure sure if liquid Fert is doing anything for these plants because I kinda just assumed they were root feeders.
