    nano fish for a 5g

    My favorite nano fish is heterandria formosa, not flashy but perfect for nano setups if you're ok with them breeding. To quote their wiki they also naturally live in "primarily in vegetated, slow moving or standing freshwater habitats". Sounds like they would be well suited for the large bow life to me.

    I rigged up solar air to my pond! The panel was from an old solar light that died a few years ago but I never took down. I checked the panel and it was 6V so I snipped out the resistor that's on the back of the ACO usb air pump motor and spliced the wires together.  It runs even in overcast weather, heres to hoping it lasts.

    Lol, it isn't occupied by large groups of people but I suppose it could be required for post disaster recovery 😛

    I did use 20 gallon aquariums in the check and referenced this video for the stand construction.

    And yes I believe some sliding is a possibility as there is no bracing.

    A long long ago I said I might do this and finally decided too. For reference I perform structural engineering for money 5 or more days a week. Abstract and conclusions are listed below and attached but I will link the full check.

    This analysis was performed using the 2015 International Building Code and the American Society of Civil Engineers spec 7-10. A simple overturning check was performed to determine the shelves probability of collapse compared to building structures. Due to the low risk to human life, an overturning FS = 1 was used and tank sloshing was assumed to have negligible effects.

     For reference the 2015 IBC ground motion maps incorporate “a target risk of structural collapse equal to 1% in 50 years based upon generic structural fragility”. So it may be the case that even in areas of higher risk the probability of tank stand collapse within a lifetime remains low. See risk maps located on page 5.

    I wonder that too. I took mine apart and the rubber diaphragms looked fine so I believe the motors gave out. It could be not great QC by the motor manufacturer which motors made at the same time can have very different life spans.

    My approach has been to be more selective where when/where I use them. Only where size, noise, and or portability are important.

    I love them too but also have had one or two die around a year of use, and a couple random ebay ones die even sooner.

    By design they will not last as long as diaphragm pumps. They use DC brushed motors which wear quicker and can have life spans in the ballpark of hundreds to a few thousand hours. I don't know the motor specs but getting a year or a little less out of one isn't surprising.
