  1. @Theplatymaster gotcha. I’m going to leave the eggs in the main tank and go from there. I really didn’t have anything set up or ready for this. I’m guessing this started because I do tank top offs and feed crushed snails a lot. I’m super curious if the emeralds and albinos actually cross-bread and see if anything comes of that.

  2. @Theplatymaster I had planaria not long ago so I dosed my tank and all my plants with the no planaria and only the Ramshorns survived. I just recently could start putting assassins back in there. I wish I could get some detritice worms back in. My substrate is hth pool filter sand and I haven’t seen any in there or the sponges.

The final task is just making sure there is mulm / food for them.

I have some s/repens starting in the front, dwarf swords on the side, a large pirate ship near the middle, and baby wendti I just planted in the back.

I don’t have any mulm in the tank that I can tell but I do feed frozen baby brine and powdered bug bite food for the baby guppies. I also do the frozen emerald entre which is spiralla, brine, and other goodies. I’m thinking of getting a colony of black worms started in there.

  4. So I came down stairs today to find my cories going crazy. Sat down and saw the bigger one up against the glass and was like well I guess she’s hungry and went to get them their food but realized there were eggs on the glass and they’re breeding.

This tank is my guppy breeding tank (my 5 year old calls it the Gumpy house) and it’s just them, a couple emerald Cory’s, and a few ottos. Are the eggs okay and how do I know they’re fertilized? I’ve only bread guppies and my Pygmy Cory’s. (The Pygmy’s were accidental and I only noticed later when I had more than I started with).

This tank is my natural tank that I only change the filter on and add top off with water. I only change the water when I see the need for it or someone’s sick. To many small fry swimming around and the females hide in the top leaves of the Amazon. I used to change every other week 20% but it stressed them out and they died. Not worth it when everyone’s healthy and happy.

PS - I’ve been reading up and it’s mentioning the T pose is the breeding and just saw an emerald and albino in the pose. Guess they’re cross breeding.

Sorry for the bad picture quality. When I realized what they’re doing, I stayed away and took zoomed in pics.

  5. I’ve been gone for 2 weeks and came back to a bad ich infection in my tank. Lost a few already and pumping them full of ichX as we speak. What’s a good secondary medication you’d follow up with?

    Ph - 6.6

    Ammonia - .25-.5

    Love the fuzzy green shell!

I’m tempted to put it back in the main tank now but I wonder if the others would swarm it.

That’s way to funny! I love it!

    Thank you lol

  7. Yeah the second ones right but the first one is something else. I have guppy grass. The first one gets about 5-8” and propagates with runners and stem offshoot clippings or hood old cut it in half and replant. It doesn’t get any thicker in the stem and the leaf sections stay about that distance apart while looking thin and long. Leaves grow about 1/4” -3/8” long. Grows in medium to high light but loves high light. Roots are shallow. Got it from a petco tissue cup

  8. I’ve now started to get the hang of keeping my plants alive and the proper color so I’m wanting to try my hand at different colors. Mainly purple if I can find them. My scarlet temples are gorgeous. Pink flamingos are actually pink and Ludwigia super reds are crimson. What are a couple purple ones you guys would suggest?

i don’t use C02 but do run fluval 3.0s and dose with thrive C and Osmocote tabs. Ph stays around neutral and GH is 8-10 with 4ish KH. This will be in a sand substrate or on driftwood is rhizome plants. Here’s my current light settings.

Sounds fun! Breeding guppies is a blast.

My only thoughts based on my experiences: It's important to make sure to exercise your Guppies through their juvenile stage into adulthood to help them prepare to carry large tails. It will make a very significant impact on the quality and longevity of the fish. You will need to feed more when you exercise them though.

Also, I'm not a fan of raising temps to get them to grow faster. Leads to a short lifespan and less desirable stock for future breeding.

How do you exercise them and what temps do you run? I keep mine at 74°-76°

I think that is a good idea. You could also maybe get some more emerald corked to expand the school and maybe make them feel more comfortable. If you do get albinos I would not get any less than 4 but probably atleast 5 or 6.

I might do that. Thank you

  11. So I’ve been keeping regular fancy tails for a few months now and breading them to see how it is. I’m enjoying it and really wanting to get a couple pairs of Moscow purples. What is every one’s opinion on them or do you have another recommendation for a purple guppy? Also if you’ve kept them any suggestions like water parameters, plants, food, tank mates and anything else would be highly appreciated. Ahead of time, I understand these aren’t cheap fish and that’s why Ike asking first for suggestions. I really wanna raise a few generations and then start breading for profit.

  12. I have 6 emerald Corys that are about 2-3 inches. They started out as not being skidish but since they’re in my plant propagating/ guppy breading tank I’m always elbow deep in there. It’s a 40 breaded with a ton of plants and hiding spots. A YouTube video from MD suggested having albinos as dithers since they’re partially blind and can’t see so will sit right up front. i was thinking of getting 2-4 albinos

    Current tank stock

    6 emerald corries

    6-7 Otto cats

    40+ guppies

    Tons of snails

If you are using 2 heaters, I’d add in an ink bird controller. It’s really hard to get both heaters to switch on at the same time, so inevitably one would assume the heavier workload. No need to get a second 100 w heater if you use the ink bird either, just add a 100w.  Just make sure you get the right one.

ink birds also provide a ‘fail safe’ in case the heaters get stuck in the on mode.

A four year old with a forty gallon.  So 4 gallons a year, guess you’re gonna need a bigger apartment at 10 years…..🤣

This in an older post on setting up an ink bird

Lol I got it originally to propagate more plants to sell and was going to get some random fish and he chose guppies and the rest. I’ll have to look into the ink bird. Thank you.

If I couldn't keep a tank warm I would use a lid and two heaters. That 12° is a big ask for one heater in a cold room. There was a recent post similar to this where Cory identified the problem as a low water level in the tank. The long water fall from the hob caused evaporative cooling in the tank.

I keep the water level to where the HOB water fall is actually just under water. Maybe an inch from the very top of the tank. It’s in the living room so trying to keep noise level down.
