  1. @nabokovfan87 I ended up getting fluval black sand as a cap for stratum. I saw Caribsea and gonna look into it for my next tank. Thank you.
  2. I ended up going with Fluval stratum in mesh bags and a bunch of seachem black sand. I know the black diamond blasting sands is way cheaper but I don’t wanna deal with washing that stuff out and running magnets through it for 3 hours. I meant an alternative to stratum and how it can help with maintaining a near neutral pH.
  3. I have a 75 gallon I’m setting up. I have 2 17.7 bags of fluval stratum and plan to mesh bag that and put it through out the tank. Then cap it with a dark sand or substrate. Aiming for 3-4 inches. I have a lot of bottom dwellers like corries and loaches so need something soft for them. Right now I only use HTH pool filter sand and love everything about it other than the light color and not keeping the water neutral for shrimp. Any advice on a dark alternative to hth and something to help with neutral water for shrimp?
  4. If I chose not to do the medicated food then how often do I feed them?
  5. @ColuThank you. I just reread it and realized he meant to put the levan in food and that’s why you syphon after 24 hours. Thank you.
  6. Thank you. Would you recommend using pareclense as well to be in the side or just expel?
  7. I got 5 CPDs and 4 guppies from Petsmart and ended up losing 2 CPDs and 3 guppies. I got some more fish and now I’m considering doing the med trio. All water perimeters are stable and all the guppies were active and eating. They were in a different tank than the cpds. One was a bit skinny but eating and active. Came down stairs to 2 dead and then a 3rd the next day. The 4th is fine though. That was 2-3 days ago. Is the med trio still recommended and if so then is this article still accurate on dosing and instructions? Sorry it’s been a while since I got new fish. Been obsessed with shrimp the last year so wanting to double check. Also I have maracyn and maracyn 2 so which would you do? https://www.aquariumcoop.com/blogs/faqs/how-to-use-quaratine-med-trio#:~:text=If you just purchased some, parasitic diseases they may have. Ph - 7-7.2 Amonia - 0 nitrites - 0 nitrates - 5 kH - 1-2 gH - 6-9 Temp - 74°
  8. @Colu Ended up losing 2 of them. I got some more fish and now I’m considering doing the med trio. They’re from petsmart and we already lost the 2 cpds and 3 out of 4 guppies as well that got bought at the same time from the same place. All water perimeters are the same and stable and all the guppies were active and eating. They were in a. Different tank than the cpds. One was a bit skinny but eating and active. Came down stairs to 2 dead and then a 3rd the next day. The 4th is fine though. That was 2-3 days ago. 9. @Colu thank you very much. I’ll keep you updated on how they do.
  10. I just got these guys about an hour ago from petsmart. They’re in a new empty quarantine tank I just set up with an existing sponge filter. I have focus, kanoplex & garlic guard and was going to use it but wanted to double check first. 5 total and 3 look healthy and plump but 2 look a bit skinny and sunken in. These go quick at the store since they sell them for $3.50 so they’ve only been there for about 2-3 days. They were all picking at detritus on the bottom of the tank in the store. I have the lights off in the tank and it’s in a dark corner but I can see them all moving around in the tank together. I’m planning on getting about 10 more when they get their next shipment later this week. parameters are temp - 78° Ph - 7-7.2 ammonia - 0 nitrites - 0 Nitrates - 0 gH - -6-8 kH - 1-2
  11. @Odd Duck here’s another from its clutch as well as the albinos. Yeah they’re all C. aeneus.
  12. @Odd Duck in all honesty, these weren’t meant for breeding. I got 5 of what I thought was emeralds and 3 albinos. The parents are no where near the colors of the offspring. They’re almost albino their selves with light shades of green but all the babies are that color. I’ll probably go to a LFS and grab a male and female to add to the genetics.
  13. The parents are emeralds and albinos I got from Petco. @Lennie the waters usually 6.8 ph, 2kh, 8 gh
  14. This is a cory that was hatched in this tank. It’s about 4-5 months old. None of the others in its batch have the crescent tail. Some days it struggles with buoyancy and other days it’s fine. It’s tail is closed up right now but usually is open and gorgeous.
  15. Thank you. I didn’t expect them so I don’t have a tank ready for them but I might leave them in the shrimp tank. Plenty of food and no predictors plus plenty of plants to enjoy swimming in.
  16. Came home today and looked in the tank to see a couple new additions. I have 3 ottos in there to help with the algae and 2 chili rasboras to help with copepods. So far I see 3 otto babies. Apparently my tanks a party house.
  17. I’ve seen the variations all over the place in this tank. It’s about a year old now with the guppies. current variations I’ve seen establish fenales - 70%-80% will have black halves and silver fronts. The rest will either be a variations of lighter grey or yellow. There’s currently a 10%-15% chance to get a female who’s black and silver has a tails that’s either black with orange trim or just completely orange. males - 90% of them all have that blue and orange mark in the front regardless what patterns or colors they have. As for colors and patterns they go through cycles where the majority in a generation will be orange and red cobras and the next will be almost all tuxedos with the color marks on the front like in the pics. The last generation is the first I’ve seen of the mails gaining red and maroon tails and the last 2-3 generations have had a few colorful ones. I only have maybe 1-2 kobras left as they don’t seem to be the hardiest guppy of the lot.
  18. Do you have any pics of the red dorsal fin? That sounds interesting about the hybrids. I’d like to see what happened with that. I e also been trying to think of what to do with the mutts but in the end I might just collect and grow them out then sell them to the LFS as fancy tails. Even if they don’t end up exactly like I want they’re still pretty and would be something someone wants. I’m looking for 2 distinct patterns but both with the current tail finagle but with more dumbo ears. The first I’m looking for is a solid dark to bright red tail with a black rear section and a colorful front half similar to a cardinal tetra. Either a neon stripe on top with red on the bottom or vise versa. From what I saw with the mosaics, they don’t have distinct color separations that I’m interested in. The attraction is that the fish looks looks a chimera or someone just took a bunch of fish parts and stitched what they like the best together. The second is the intense patterns of colors on the tail like that one and with endless guppy striping and patterns in the body. I don’t want either fish to have massive float tails but I’d love this one to have either a pintail, lyre tail, or double sword tail. I want this one to be a blast of color to match something you’d see in a saltwater tank.
  19. I thought about something like that but in my case it was desperate the females until they give birth then put the males in and babies out. The juveniles are a good try. Since there are multiple of each of those maybe separate the males with 2 females and every couple generations cross bread the 2 lines to add genetic diversity.
  20. A year ago me and my son went to all the Petcos, Petsmarts, and LFS around and got several guppies of all the lines we could find. We got tuxiedos, kobras, red tails, a beautiful purple and blue half moon tail, and possible an Endler snuck in. Should I try and separate these strains I like or not and if so how do I pick a female? Nearly all the females are now tuxedos. Should I go out and look for a female that matches better or will it not matter?
  21. He uses the regular ones not the Colombian if I remember. The ones I posted are the ones that get to like 3” or more. They’re 2 different types. I have the regulars that get to 1” max but I was in a LFS in a new city and saw them and had never seen them that big so posted it here. One of the ones on the front glass was bigger then a 50 cent piece if you’re in the US.
  22. Gotcha. Yeah I’m good. Literally defeats the whole purpose of then to be small and get into little cracks.
