  1. Carbon came with my filter and I replaced it with sponge. I keep some on hand for removing toxin's or meds (never needed yet). Never used crushed coral I have soft water with pH at 7 from the tap so I just work with that.
  2. Sorry if I seem negative, I'm horribly pragmatic at times, I just want things to go well and be as we safe and easy for all of you. I understand pets are hard to leave behind but I'd rather that than lose them in a tricky and exhausting move. Best of luck with it all
  3. I'd be tempted to re-home the puffers, they are popular so easier than most fish to get someone or a LFS to take. I only say this because of the level of uncertainty in the plan and the fewer tanks the better until you know your not going to be a hotel at least. Also puffers are often very fussy eaters and breeding snails or keeping frozen foods might be problematic. Sounds like things are going to be kinda busy for you for awhile so try and simplify as much as you can. Could the bristlenose and the Betta live together in a slightly larger tank rather than having to set up multiple small tanks. This again because of potential space issues in hotels I would also be tempted to use something like a plastic lidded box rather than a tank it will be more forgiving in being moved about and you could just drop the water level for traveling then when things are more certain get the right thing for your home. Irene used something like that in this.
  4. I normally treat again about a to week down the line to catch anything hatching time frame depends on the temp as warmer water speeds up the life cycle. I have no experience with ich-x though
  5. As @Scapexghostsays it's a very expensive way of feeding houseplants. I use tank water predominantly on my plants . Previously I have used liquid houseplant fertz that you dilute.
  6. I've been using tank water on my entire garden (it's very small) and the roses seem to do very well. It's most likely a fungus this link might help you get to the bottom of things https://www.rhs.org.uk/disease/rose-black-spot
  7. Hi this link is the advice I got from @JettsPapa before I got my shrimp. And it's been very useful indeed. https://forum.aquariumcoop.com/topic/17903-am-i-shrimp-safe/?do=findComment&comment=156080
  8. To me this sounds like your cycle has crashed so you are now going to have to go through a fish in cycle process. Ammonia is very toxic to fish so large water change to get that number down, then continuous small changes to keep the fish healthy, this can take a long time to resolve as keeping the ammonia level safe for the fish slows down the cycling process. Plants will help and prime can bind the ammonia for a short period but the safest way for your fish is water changes. I would try not let the ammonia get above 0.25 but you are aiming for zero. Cycles can crash for many reasons changing out the cartridge or cleaning algae can contribute. I have stuck some links below that will no doubt explain things far better than I
  9. Frogs are awesome and great for the garden. I soo want a pond when I can figure out what to do in my tiny jungle yard
  10. They are doing great so just carry on maybe up the brine shrimp while they are little. Congrats
  11. They are impressive to watch but probably a bit large for my tank space. He was quite taken with them. I really like how the juveniles (black/grey and dotty) had a sort of primitive look to them. Cool that they breed like discus to.
  12. Looks like Cory was listening to you.
  13. I spotted some young Uaru in the lfs today I thought they looked interesting, has anyone kept them? They were pretty pricey certainly more than I normally consider. I'm still convinced I'm not ready for investment fish.
  14. My favourite tiny fish is the pygmy Cory (because no one told them they are tiny they are the chihuahua of the fish tank). Next up would be neon or cardinals tetra they are just so bright and quite well behaved. I'm often tempted by Enders but I try to keep clear of live bearers. Apistos are very friendly but in my experience don't like each other, single kribs are also fun.
  15. They are often called sucking loaches over here and they are cute when they are young. I hadn't seen any for years but tried a new LFS a bit back and they were in about 3 of their tanks. The shop gave no warning about their grumpy side and downplayed their adult size a bit when I asked about. She just stated they rarely get returned. Inch start on the substrate so the fish nearer the bottom tend to show it first. However flashing isn't always ich my SAE's often flash just to make me paranoid. I've learnt to make sure it's scratching not flashing before I throw the meds in.
  16. I collect from the beaches near me just wash ( mainly in case of dog pee) and use. I have only boiled ones that have had lots of holes in them just in case something is lurking deep within
  17. Some things are sold with some water in them if they have been pressure tested but this seems very unlucky if that is what is causing this. It could be from the same kind of bloom that causes biofilm on the surface of tank water or that new tank headache but where it is could cause you issues and the yellow hints its got something we don't normally relate to tanks in it. I would look at removing it from the tank and running it on a decent sized bowl of a disinfectant solution for long enough to feel that its got all through it (maybe overnight to be cautious) Then flush it with running on clean water for a while and get as much pressure or the highest flow rate you can for rinsing. You can solutions to use to disinfect things for baby's possibly look into those to see if they would be a little safer for your pet. I'm busking this maybe more experienced people will chime in. When you set it back up make sure there is no air in the system generally (in my grim experience) these blooms happen where it is humid but not underwater. Hope this gives you some ideas to work with, please do some additional reading I have never used a chiller on anything and never kept an axolotl. Final thought from this very salty salt water might work to clean. (use cheap salt not your posh stuff your rinsing this out anyway iodine won't matter ) Good luck
  18. Well that stuff takes me back to my days off working in a bar. It's a bacterial growth (I think in the salmonella family but don't panic). You'll have to disinfect to get rid and then try and figure out what is causing the explosion. In the bar it was generally in the dish washer because it was humid and some staff were lazy about water changes or forgetting to drain it at the end of the night. Not sure why it's going nuts there but I don't really know how your set up works. Is that an air line or water pipe ?
  19. I missed something off my dream list Cuttlefish! I watched a documentary once where they had taught the cuttlefish to show shapes on their bodies to ask for things, like different foods. And that if they were shown certain symbols they could either copy or show a different one to get what they wanted. So that sounds to me like a fun and interactive wetpet
  20. For me it definitely depends on the tank when I was keeping goldfish with a nice high maintenance rate one tank was enough. Now I am using the same set up but it is now a planted tropical tank which can go months without the need to do any maintenance if life gets in the way. So I have added a nano shrimp set up and I am contemplating a 3rd tank if I can squeeze one into my tiny house with hardly any power outlets.
  21. I have a old fluval and I can't fault it really, 10 years no leaks and I have only had to replace the primer handle still running the original sponges and ceramic media. And it is quiet which is important to me.
  22. Last night it was live music with James, their smallest gig in about 20 years and you can tell they loved the experience as did we all. They threw the gig into their current tour as extra date to raise money for war child. Which was jolly nice of them. Now to spend the day listening to their back catalogue
  23. That is available in most stores I visit in the UK at least bloodworm and daphna. From a post I read recently frozen foods are a lot cheaper here as well. I think the main brand is European so it's probably just a shipping thing. I do think that working in the live food farm must be a bit grim (they must have break away hatches and so many things flying around) maybe @Cory should do a factory tour sometime.
  24. Truly enjoyed the expanse one of the few new TV shows that has a really well balanced cast that you get to know. The critical drinker gave a great review to
