Thank you! I love your tank! What kind of black substrate do you have in your tank?

We used Carib Sea Eco Complete Planted Black Aquarium Substrate...bought it from Amazon.👍

  2. We repeat our dosing of Levamisole this weekend. The water did not clear up until today. I think with the meds & water changes & vacuuming, we killed off a lot of bacteria. We've had Ammonia, but 0 ppm nitrites and less than 10 ppm nitrates. We dosed with Easy Green & that seemed to help. We're hoping this weekend's dosing doesn't kill off more of the good stuff!

I've fed Xcel flakes & pellets as usual, but yesterday & today added spinach. I'm hoping it will boost everyone's systems a bit.

I have mixed feelings about the lid.  I like that I can just slide it back to feed, but I'm noticing evaporation problems.  I don't change the water weekly since, with one fish, it doesn't need it.  But after two weeks the water drops significantly.  I should probably worry more about Rowan escaping, but there are a lot of floating plants at the top so I feel like jumping is unlikely (knock on wood).

I've noticed I get more evaporation on tanks that catch a direct air flow from my a/c. I may need to move this tank if that's a problem. Thanks for mentioning it!

I started out with lots of sponge behind that partition too. But I kept losing fish & shrimp back there. Then I covered all the openings & still kept losing shrimp. They'd crawl right up & over the wall! LoL! I plan on lots of plants too, so I hope that won't be a problem.

I found that the glass top is designed to fit only one way. If I line up the curved front of the lid with the curved front of the tank, there is no gap in front

Well... now I just feel like an idiot! We used this tank for months last year & never realized we had the lid on BACKWARDS! 🙄😂

Oh well... that will be the something new I learned today! And that always makes for a good day. Thank you!  And thank you,  too,  for the thoughts on the pedestal. I like the idea of catching all the drips!

  5. I remembered that a couple of you have this same tank, so I thought I'd share what I'm working on and ask a few questions. I plan to set this up as a QT.

I removed the pump, tubing and filter material. Then I used a razor blade to remove the sealant on the plastic partition that has caused everyone so much trouble. It was really satisfying to get it out of there and see I was left with a nice open tank!

My questions:  Do you all use this tank with its pedestal? I've never quite understood the use of it, because it doesn't support the entire tank bottom. Is there a reason for that? If there is, I've not figured it out.

I'm concerned about the less-than-tight-fitting lid. The front leaves about a 1/2 inch gap and the back one is bigger, even with the light attached and the air hose going out there. Have any of you lost fish through those spaces?

Has anyone removed the black vinyl from the back of the tank? If so, was it difficult to get off?

I plan to run it bare-bottom with a small sponge filter. The filter has been in another tank for several months, and I also used some water from that tank too. I plan to plant a couple of clippings from stem plants (from my aquariums) in rockwool in little mesh cups to pop in there too.

Any other suggestions or tips with this tank? Thanks so much!

Black diamond blasting sand (BDBS) from Tractor Supply is a great cheap option for a sand substrate. Probably THE cheapest substrate for black sand out there.

Did you use "fine" or "medium" black diamond blasting sand? My TSC has both.

It is a skill from years of practice encouraged by an art teacher mom. I highly recommend the book ‘Drawing on the right side of the brain”, it’s great for adults/teens who want to develop drawing skills and really breaks down how to “see” what you are drawing which is really the actual struggle. We naturally draw what we think we see, not what actually appears in front of our eyes.

Ginger, I've recently been learning that "art" has a place in my life. Right now,  I'm learning to watercolor. At your recommendation, I got the above book. It is awesome!!! I'm only on the first chapter,  but I'm learning SO much!  Thank you for recommending it! I can tell it's going to make a huge difference in my art.

Lizzie, I'm having a terrible time posting. I even tried to send you a message but it won't work. I can post to a thread that is already in the works but can't start one of my own. I can't send you a message. Every time I try the title line goes pink with an error message above it saying to fix it. I've tried everything I can think of. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Robin

Robin, we've all been having trouble starting a new thread today. @Cory suggested it could be the forum platform having issues, rather that just our forum.

This is my snail breeding tub...about 10 gallons with crushed coral undergravel filter, super wonder shell and zoo med banquet block to hes supplement dietary calcium. Even still I have some shell erosion on my older snails....granted that many snails in 10 gallon is an extreme but you can see how tough it is to keep their shells from eroding

Yes, ok. That makes sense! There are so many needing the calcium, you have to provide really high levels. Thanks for the info. That makes perfect sense now.

  10. It was really bad. I was losing 8-10 fish a day for weeks.  I think it was wasting disease.  It's the only thing I can figure. We did a 25% change today with gravel vacuuming. (Ammonia had doubled by this morning.)  We've lost over 30 fish since day 1 of the treatment, but none overnight last night. I can still see stringy poop, though, so I know they are still affected.

Thanks for the info. I appreciate it so much. 🥰
