  1. Let me clarify apparently, this happened a year ago with two of my 11 tanks and my fish are most definitely good and was only asking about opinions on putting a timer on air pumps . I appreciate your opinions though👍

You need water movement in a tank 24/7.

CO2 and oxygen exchange happens on the water surface. You should use sponge filters at minimal in tanks to help break down waste and aerate the water. With out water movement of some kind in the tank the fish will use up most of the oxygen, very little co2 can escape stagnant water. Stagnant water is also a breeding ground for Bacteria, fungi and biofilms that will eventually get your fish sick and probably kill them.

@JimOpI have been running my filterless fish room for a year so I disagree on your view with filters. I run my tanks similar to LRB Aquatics except I use air. My fish and plants are thriving that being said thanks for your input 👍

  3. Question, I run a fish room with no filters but I use air after noticing a couple tanks with fish struggling from oxygen deprivation issues. I was curious for opinions on if air needs to be run 24/7? All my tanks are heavily planted and thought of putting my air pump on a timer to only run part of the day or night but I’m not sure one, if this is a good idea and two, if so when is the best time to turn it off?

  4. Question, I have some dirted tanks and they are doing good but have considered adding more of a cap. I have about 1-1.5 inch cap currently some with sand and some with gravel. I was considering putting sand over the gravel caps . Is this doable to make the dirt level anoxic to get anaerobic bacteria? I obviously don’t want to remove gravel over dirt to put sand.
These tanks have been up and running for a year and a half and are doing great just want them to last long term and feel this might be necessary for that to happen.

  5. Anyone know if these are Aphids? Got them in multiple tanks. Any solutions to get rid of them? Have been knocking them off the plant’s daily hoping the fish will eat them but doesn’t look like the numbers have gone down.

  6. So I’m thinking about rescaping my 75 gallon tank and was thinking about finding a piece of wood that would fit the length of the tank. My question is what type of wood can I use?  I’m assuming a hardwood over softwood  but what about wood I already find in a lake or River? Is there anything that needs to be done before adding to my tank so the fish don’t die from it?

  7. So I have a random question, a work buddy is into reptiles and asked if I could squeeze my sponge filters into jar so he can use it to jump start the beneficial bacteria  for his bearded dragons bioactive (I have no idea what this is 😂) . My question is if I do this how long is the beneficial bacteria going to stay alive? Hours? Days? Just don’t know if I squeeze them before work it would still be good throughout the day or if he should come get it? Lol I know really random question

  8. I have a Fahaka in a 75 gallon currently. It’s almost a year old and 10 inches. My hope is it won’t get monstrous otherwise I will get a bigger tank. Tank mates are hit or miss with mine. I have swordtails, guppies, Endler, Sae , cardinal tetras and ember tetras in the tank. It eats my adult guppies and swordtails typically so I haven’t put anymore in only they fry that are growing in the tank. I have a 306 fluval cannister filter and only do water changes a bout once a month. I struggle to get my nitrates to 40. I love the fish but if there is a certain puffer or fish you want over the other I would get that and the tank to fit if needed other than settling . I always wanted a fahaka so I decided to go for it last year and if I need a bigger tank then so be it and will get one .

  9. Need some help IDing this guppy if possible. Bought it from a lfs and was sold as an orange/red guppy. I’m assuming it’s a hybrid of some kind but not 100 percent sure any help would be great.

  10. Ok, a bit of a vent here and I could be completely wrong and I’m sure they are following the rules but here I go.
I went to my local Petsmart ( only fish store in my town. Have to drive 45 minutes to an hour north or south to get to a LFS) and seen they had red clawed crabs. I have a growing fahaka puffer and thought I would get a few to try for him to eat. They make me fill out a form for purchase and I asked is this normal? And she said yes just not for the fish cause they are just fish! And  I was jaw dropped that fish aren’t considered a pet to them but considering the dozens of dead fish in all there tanks I shouldn’t be surprised. I don’t shop there normally except for frozen fish food. The worker then asks me what size tank I have and I tell her they are going to be fed to my puffer so it really doesn’t matter. She says I will sell them to you but we’re not supposed to sell these as food. So I say next time I won’t say they are food then.
I go to check out and the store manager stops me on the way out and says you know they sell frozen food to help wear down puffers teeth. I’m like yes I’m aware I have some . Mind you they don’t carry it there I have to drive 45 minutes to get it. Then the manager tells me they won’t be able to sell me the crabs any longer.
Here is my position, why are feeder fish, feeder shrimp, crickets, and worms all ok to sell for feeding but crabs are not. If there is some law prohibiting them from doing it fine but it still makes No sense. Vent over but if I attempt to buy them again I won’t wear my co op sweatshirt with Murphy on it next time. Maybe they won’t remember me lol

  11. So I’m at a loss, this summer I set up a 100 gallon Rubbermaid tub outside with plants 3 goldfish about 4 inches and a koi about 3 inches. I put in 3 pairs of red dragon guppies. Within days all but one female guppy was all I could find. Periodically through the summer I would add another male and they would keep disappearing. Thought it was weird but figured a bird or something kept getting them. Well I live in Wisconsin so I brought the tub into my basement for the winter and transferred the fish to it. I added another male guppy in hopes of breeding over the winter and the male is nowhere to be seen. I looked all over the tub and there was no body. I added a bunch of young Endler and different guppies at this point (all small) and they are still alive and thriving so I added another adult male red dragon guppy and the next day it is missing again. I’m at a loss for what is happening to them. I have a big female red dragon guppy, 3 goldfish 4in , 1 koi 4inch , 4 coryies , a few albino bristlenose plecos and a bunch of young Endler and guppies stocked in the tub. I wouldn’t think any of them would eat an adult guppy. Anyone have any ideas where they are disappearing from?

I have kept a fahaka to about 5" or so in the past before moving that one on to a friend to replace one he lost and to focus on my puffer projects. @Grizzly  I did not really see any issue with the fahaka teeth overgrowing on snails and similar foods to yours. At that small of a size the fahaka mouth was still growing as the teeth were but I would guess at 8" on up it would be more of a risk.

    REPASHY

If you can get that on a clam shell so your puffer has to crunch the shell that would add more wear to the teeth.

    SNAILS

I personally look at ramshorns as probably too thin to really wear down puffer teeth by themselves, trumpet snails are a tougher shell, and mystery snails seem to be thicker shells and much better longer term for teeth wear.

    CLAMS

For a fahaka I would also try to get acceptance of clams on the half shell of appropriate size from either a seafood department at a grocery store, a seafood market, or the aquarium specific clams in the frozen food section of your LFS etc. I used Hikari bio pure clams on the half shell with my fahaka back then with good success after it had got to 4" or so.

If I didnt have the LFS clams I would try fresh clams of appropriate size from a seafood department etc and just half the shell before feeding or before freezing it with a little vitachem and garlic guard for later feeding.

    FROZEN CRAB LEGS

I havent tried it but have considered snow crab legs for a fahaka at larger sizes. They are smoother than king etc often on sale and in theory are just like a crayfish you can find in the frozen section of thr grocery store.

    CRAYFISH

I do not believe Wisconsin allows you to recieve a shipment of live crawfish but if that ever changes.... I have thought of online ordering pounds of live purged crayfish normally used for a crayfish boil for my fahaka. My idea was if its food grade for me its food grade for my fahaka.

My idea of getting pounds sent to me was to remove the need to have quite so much tank space needed for "crayfish ranching" to support my future 18" puffer. For my fahaka I estimated I would need to raise 10-20 adult crayfish a week to feed those as a primary food source.  I am less of a crayfish devotee and more of a puffer guy so I knew that crayfish program would fail if I attempted it.

    CRABS

Fiddler and mangrove same as crayfish not sure breeding and raising them would be fun for me

Thats all the options I can think of that I would try with a fahaka puffer 4" and up.

@mountaintoppufferkeeperthank you that definitely was a lot of useful information.
I can’t find the clam on the half shell in my lfs and are an arm and a leg to ship them so I will look at the grocery store. I love the repashy clam shell idea will have to try that. I also have trumpet snails in a couple tanks I can start giving him as well . He ate all of them that were in his tank from the couple years I had it before getting him. Thanks again

  13. I got a Fahaka puffer back in August and he is a good 4 inches right now. Its diet consists of raw frozen shrimp I cut up, worms, blood worms/ brine shrimp,  repashy grub pie and ramshorn snails. I put ghost shrimp in occasionally for him to hunt and tried the frozen cooked mussels.
Now my question is is feeding him around 10 ramshorn snails with other food a day enough to keep his teeth wore down? Like I said I tried the cooked mussels which I’m not a fan of being cooked and the shells open enough for him to get the meat out without using his teeth so I feel is pointless. I just started breeding mystery snails and just got 3 clutches hatched in a tank waiting to grow out for more of a food then small rams horns . I want to find crayfish to breed but living in Wisconsin this time of year I can’t find any and I’m not sure they are legal to sell in fish stores.
So after my long book does anyone have experience with feeding puffers or more specifically fahaka and know if what I’m doing is enough to not have to worry about trimming his teeth. Or know any other food sources for his teeth I’m not thinking of?

  14. Hey all I’m looking to try to cut some costs with my fish room if possible and was curious if guppies really need a heater. I live in Wisconsin and my tanks are in the basement. I took a few heaters out this summer and water stayed around 70 degrees but in the winter from previous experience with goldfish know my water temperature is usually low 60’s to 65. I want them to breed and live normally so not sure if that’s possible at a lower temperature. Anyone have info or experience in this?

It seems Wolffia is the genus name for both duckweed and watermeal.  I found the picture below at a herbicide website.  It describes both plants.

Has anything been added or changed with the tank recently?  Did someone borrow your net?  Did a kid borrow the net and use it in the local stream or pond?  I am assuming a bird couldn't have flown over the tank left a deposit....  Do you use rain water?  Find what has change and you will find how you got it.  Sorry to say not sure how you get rid of it except by getting a Goldfish.  Cory says they love Duckweed.  Good Luck.  Let us know if you figure out how it happened.  It will be a lesson for all of us.  Thanks.

Nothing has been added or changed in like 6 months. No one borrowed the net. I use that net to take duckweed out of all my fish room tanks. None of my tanks I use the net for changed except one I added guppies but not the tank in question. Tank is in the basement so yes no birds deposits and I use tap water. Honestly no idea how it got there but as of know I prefer it over duckweed

Wolffia or watermeal.  I've never had it in a tank but I imagine it's even harder to get rid of than duckweed!

Well how the heck did I get that in my tank. All my tanks have duckweed and  red root floaters and have been in there for like 6 months and this first popped up last week. Side note I never thought I find something that out competes duckweed
