  1. Bracing for another triple digits day and trying to keep all the critters comfortable. No AC in our house, and not looking forward to two more days of this heat. @gogomarigo I hope you can get your tank to stay safe. Try getting a cup of water and just pouring some tank water to get oxygen and water movement if you were not able to get an air pump.

Question for everyone: I have some leftover Benjamin Moore paint that I’d be planning on using for this project. Is it okay to use wall paint on wood? Do I need primer or anything? And do you think I’ll need to cover it in a poly coat or other sort of finish? Can I even do that over wall paint?

@Hobbit This is looking great! You are doing a fantastic job!

On the paint, is it flat or does it have some gloss in it? The gloss will be easier to clean. I have used it on wood with great results to attain an old finish by steel-wooling the paint down. If it is going to get wet, I suggest a sealant of some sort as @ChemBobrecommends or it will eventually bubble.

    Flat BM paint:

Wow, that's gorgeous!  It really turned out very nice.  I'm so impressed you build that yourself.  That's the first tank you've ever built right?

Canisters?  Have you given up on your v-sump?

Thanks! First tank of any sort, yes. I am happy with it, even though it is not perfect.

V-Sump is nicely tucked behind the wall so you do not see anything. I will post pictures of the “machine room” once the chiller is installed and all systems up and running. The idea is to only see the tank.

  4. I have found cutting a paper the size of the tank footprint and doing layout there first helps with figuring out where to put plants.

One mistake I made when I started was to forget plants grow and I ended up having to reconfigure a little because some were in the wrong spot.

I started with Walstad tanks but decided I needed the flexibility to move plants around, so switched to sand and that made it much easier. Also, I use a lot of Epiphytes which can help the tank look more mature due to adding planted height using the hardscape.

  5. That was my first set-up!

    1. Nerite snails are fun.  Mystery snails are gorgeous but escape artists!

    2. A root feeder and a floater. Snails are poopy machines so keeping the ammonia in check is a good idea. 50% water changes once a week.

    3. No need for a lid with a Nerite, especially if you have floaters. A must with Mystery snails.

    4. Some sort of surface movement is ideal. Air stone is the easiest choice. Snails like "spa time" every now and then and will enjoy the bubbles.

Depending on where she is, a heater might be necessary. Light for the plants too, but it does not have to be a dedicated light if there is a lot of natural light.

    Fun!

  6. My suggestion would be to have the higher light requirement plant density concentrate towards the center where you have the light overlap.

Start at 75% to encourage growth, dial it down if you see algae. As the plants fill in, you can adjust the light. Right now, it looks like your Anubias are towards the center of the tank where the light tends to be more intense, so I would move them towards the edges and where the light is less intense.

You can also place the Epiphytes in that low light area and have the root feeders together to make your life easier when it comes to fertilizing.

    Just a thought...

Oh! That sucks! I've only had one shrimp jump/escape and that was sad enough. Would you think it would be risky if it was a male (more weighed down?🤷🏻‍♀️) The tank has floaters all over the top most of the time and Val all across the top too... Oh, and water wisteria. I was going to have a feeding ring.

If shrimp feel threatened or are attacked they will jump. I tried a couple of shrimp with my Betta but had to come to the realization that I have a fish that will eat his roommates, so no more shrimp in that tank. I converted to all lids after finding little critters, but the reality is, even with lids if they want to jump they will. I think happy critters have no desire to leave the tank unless they are miserable or spooked by something.

I bet this group would love to see some Moon Snail pics! They always put a smile on my face!

They are some of the coolest gifts from the ocean around here. When my kids were little it was a must to go check their nests every year! 😃

I'll try to get pics but temps are going to be nasty for the next few days!

  10. I have had a pea puffer in a 3 gallon long for close to a year, and another one in a 7 gallon. They have shrimp and snails in the tank, eating the snails but leaving the shrimp alone. Both heavily planted tanks and I rearrange things every now and then. I do 50% WC twice a week on the 3 gallon, once a week on the 7 gallon, both with canister filters. They are both lots of fun and playful, extremely curious and always greet me in the morning. Love those little bits to pieces! 🙃

I was hoping that would happen!  😁

Well, it did! Now you can sleep better.🙃 I find it funny that @Biotope Biologist is into cars when I am the worst Italian who doesn't like to cook or care about driving, even though grandfather used to work for Alfa Romeo before he had to leave for WWI.

I will take a Moon snail over a car, anytime!

  12. Sometimes this hobby makes me wonder why I even have to hire a plumber! I know now fittings and pipes like the back of my hand. And flow!, don't forget flow!

  13. Well, after seeing Murphy chomp on clams, and Nicodemus (my pea puffer) already eating SW amphipods, I went ahead and fed him a marine snail. They seem a little tougher (did not stop him) and he is still alive this morning. Not only that, he has been following me quite earnestly all morning every time I walk by his tank. 🐡
