If you’re planning to breed your fish, I might try something else. Fry are easily going up the intake. I have breeding angels, not sure if they’re being eaten or being sucked up. They like to lay their eggs close to the intake. Or on it.

That would work fine. If you can find one big enough. I haven’t been able to yet, locally.

Good point. I think I'd be able to make a cover with that plastic crafting canvas and some course filter sponge. Thanks for mentioning how big the intake is.

Yes, the intake is an issue. The grate openings are about 1/4 inch between slots. Depending on the size of the fish you could easily lose some. Doesn’t appear to have a whole lot of suction power at the intake because the filter intake box is wide open and probably 2” x3”. Gives it plenty of area to suck from keeping the pressure down.

@Tony s So it sounds like the intake wouldn't be an issue if I cover it with a course sponge?

  3. @Pepere I guess another question other than the intake possibly be an issue (if I go with the fx2 and spray bar) is if the 407 would be powerful enough to keep the substrate clean once all the plants grow in. I feed heavily and tend to go for a jungle look with plants, so there is always a ton of mulm after a couple of weeks. I like doing water changes, but hate vacuuming the gravel.

I would imagine a spray bar across the back of the tank  under the water surface aimed at the front of the tank would tame the flow for nano fish nicely without having to throttle it down.

diffusing the flow rather than throttling it.

@Pepere I considered that, but wouldn't the input still be an issue? I don't have a ton of experience with canister filters. I was worried  the smaller fish might get stuck to the intake. I do plan on having it covered with course sponge.

  5. I'm wondering if I would be able to reduce the flow on an fx2 for a few months in my 75 gallon. It's a community tank with most fish about chili rasbora size or slightly larger.

A store employee warned me that reducing flow too much would damage the motor over time, so I decided to hold off on purchasing one. I do have med/high light and co2, and plan on having extremely heavy vegetation in this tank within 3-6 months.

Would the Fluval 407 be a better option? I have a 207 on a smaller tank that I've been extremely happy with.

  6. I bought 5 glass heaters and 3 out of 5 sound a bit like a kettle before it starts whistling when they are heating. Anyone ever experience this sound with an aquarium heater or know what could cause it?

I let each one sit in the aquarium for a couple of hours before plugging in. 2 out of the 3 haven't been exposed to air since I put them in. They've all been placed next to sponge filters. The sound takes 2-3 days to start.

    Help!

  7. @ComradovichIt's a rimmed tank. I am really just concerned about the one corner that isn't completely flush.

@nabokovfan87I checked the tank and the shelf that the tank will be sitting on with spirit levels.

I tried putting the tank on several other smooth, level surfaces last night and it's always the same corner, so it might be a problem with the tank rim. I'm going to put some kind of foam or cork under the tank (nothing thick enough to push up on the bottom pane) and call it a day.

Just wanted to make sure I wasn't worrying too much about such a small gap at one corner. This project feels like it's taking forever and a day!

    Thank you for replying!

  8. I can slide a piece of paper under one corner  and the middle of my 33g long. I can't get a debit card under any part of the tank and the plywood shelf is level side to side and back to back.

Am I safe to fill the tank or should I wait until I can get that back corner to touch the plywood?

I tried using a 1/2" yoga mat under the plywood and that didn't help.

  9. I posted here 3-4 months ago about possible eggs that showed up in my Elassoma gilberti tank a week or two after I got them. I saw  teeny-tiny fry not too long after and now they are fully colored up! I am hoping to keep a self-sustaining colony. I made sure to line up a shop that can take some if breeding is too successful.

  10. I would like to inject a small amount of CO2 into a 33g long (approx. 48"x12.5"x13"), but I'm worried about getting enough circulation to distribute it throughout the tank. I am restricted to using sponge filters and most of the stock will be tiny nano fish that don't appreciate a lot of flow. I wouldn't be worried if it wasn't such a long, shallow tank.

I'll have 2 medium Aquarium Co-op sponge filters at both ends and plan on having a pretty dense stem plant jungle. I considered adding a power head next to the diffuser once the stem plants really fill in. I could also add a manifold and have a diffuser at both ends.

Am I worrying about nothing? Any input or advice would be appreciated.

I notoriously struggle with Java fern. I’ve had it for years. I don’t kill it, but it doesn’t take off the way I would like to see it. The brown/dark spots could be signs of potassium deficiencies. Mine grow, they reproduce, but they’ve never looked like what I want.

I was looking at Seachem’s potassium supplement this past weekend. It’s 6% potassium and Easy Green already has 9%. I am thinking I could just dose more Easy

I did that and ended up having issues with nitrates. My anubias and java ferns greened up and growth exploded once I started adding Seachem potassium instead of extra Easy Green

I’d like glo fish if it was markings (like the blue on neon tetras glowed) I’m just not a fan of the company they just seem shady

Yeah, but most of the large scale fish trade is pretty gnarly. I don't want to get into the ethics of glofish since this is just fantasy.
