  1. Its is an Acrylic Tank that I really dislike but there you have it. Due to weight concerns of where it is, I went Acrylic. I intend to take the tank down and get rid of it when I move all the fish. It is beautiful when clean but constant 2 times a week cleanings are a bit much. Because it is an Acrylic tank the top does not come off and those slot measurements are all it has. Thanks for the freezer bag thought, that is one I did not think of.
  2. To add information, the fish is pretty docile and knows me well. So, I do not believe it will be difficult to catch it but I do not want to hurt him or her nor any of her fins and all of her various fins are long and full. I have a 4 gallon wide bucket to move her in after I get her out of the tank she is in. It is getting her out of the tank that is my issue.
  3. I am looking for suggestions on methods to move an 18 inch long Fancy Goldfish. It is about 7 years old and a lot of the length is fin. It is coming out of an Acrylic tank with (2) 13 1/2 inch long and 7 1/4 wide slots in the top. I can only get a big bowl in sideways and the same with a pond net. I have toyed with a lot of ideas but would appreciate any suggestions. She or He is moving to a bigger tank on this Saturday. Thank you in advance.
  4. Thank you for the Video. It was interesting but for now I have all my tanks going different directions. Added an RODI system to the house that lets me pull either the RO only (fish)or the remineralized water for (Dog and Me). Makes great coffee and does excellent for the various tanks. I'm getting the water chemistry thing down and I think I have headed over the learning curve to proper understanding. I know I have a lot to learn still. So, for the time being I don't want to get any more complicated than I have become. Still, Some day.
  5. Ok Still have the bully situation but working on it. Right now it is scared of me and hides when I go to the tank so we shall see. This question is for another tank I have been working on. It is a 20 long with active substrate small gravel. It is on a 2 tank rack with a 15 gallon on the bottom that I want to make Crystal Black Shrimp with Cherry shrimp only tank. The 20 Gallon I would like lots of color and movement and just life in general. I have RO water in both tanks and can pretty much make the water parameters fit anything for a change. They are on the 4th week of cycling and doing well. I just do not know what to put in the top 20 long. What I am asking is what fish would you fine folks suggest for color and variety I have options for lots of plants and already have two very cool of no tannin driftwood I want to use in it. I am also looking for a centerpiece fish as well as the movement variety. So suggest away and I thank you in advance.
  6. The 4 gold fish are 2 6 years and 2 2 years old in the tank. All are over 5 inches long with the biggest and oldest coming in at 12 inches (mostly tail). The crayfish has about 1/3 of the tank as a home with both hiding spaces and more opened all protected from the top so the gold fish cannot get to it and he has no desire to get to them. There is also a bristle nosed pleco that is the crayfishes buddy. The only problem in any of my current 12 tanks is that blasted SAE.
  7. It has plenty of other wood in the tank it could use to hide and other plants and things for security and since it has been warm the light has not been turned on. When it was smaller it was a nice fish eating black hair algae off the plants but now that it has gained size, it turned into a bully. It had one of my large 7 in goldfish hunched in a corner the other day. Truth be told I have been hoping the crayfish would get tired of it and just eat it.
  8. Here ya go. This behavior started about 5 weeks ago and I have tried everything to stop it so he has to go. PS all fish have personalities and my crayfish is a pacifist.
  9. Yes I Know what it is and I would love to rehome it if I could get it out of the tank. The problem is I cannot get it out of the tank.
  10. I badly want to get rid of a Siamese Algae Eater. It has turned full on into a bully and is picking on my large Goldfish and my equally large blue Crawdad. Problem is it is fast and keep hiding in the crawdad's area which is a wood "jungle gym". Short of taking out all the tank decorations and the crawdad's home, does any one have experience or suggestions how to get this problem fish out of the tank?
  11. This topic really is for entertainment value and does not require a reply unless you have you own tale regarding these little creatures. True Story - I have nerite snails in a 20 long rimmed tank and I have two that are escape artists. In the spring/summer I take the lids off so I can better regulate the temperature. This leads to these two little ones being able to leave the tank at will. At night when it is "lights out", I check to be sure everyone is at the bottom on the substrate but these little ones seem to leopards of the snail world in terms of speed. This morning I came out to feed and check on everyone (multiple tank syndrome) and on the carpet half way across the room from the tank was one of the nerite snails. I picked him (or her) up and he was dry as a bone but dropped him back in the tank anyway. I thought he would be dead for sure but no. In about an hour, he was up and moving. Just thought I would share a tale of the wondrous creatures we employ to clean our aquariums and enjoy their colorful selves. If you have you own tail of the amazing "animals", please feel free to share.
  12. Great Video Thank You. Observation and just curiosity. He uses tap water to help the algae grow? Sounded like he might be on a well too but his TDS is way lower than mine so I might just use the rodi water which is close to his tap water TDS just a bit lower. I understand substrate a whole lot better. So far I have been using the inert variety due to my well water. Now that I do have to RODI system I have been using that to make coffee and it is amazing the difference (slowly changed the fish to it too). I'm almost embarrassed to say this but I never much thought about the water chemistry part of this. I have never lost a fish and the one that started this whole shebang in aquariums is a fancy goldfish. Got it as a little one and it grew so did the number and size of tanks I started to own. She or He is a beautiful 14 inches from tip of tail to mouth. Her fins are rimmed in white is it is quite the sight in the blue lights. I digress sorry, Now I have been learning mountains of things about water chemistry thanks to all of you and I appreciate you patience with me. I bought Amazonia powered soil and away I go. I know now the target area for the TDS and will keep testing till I get the right GH and KH numbers. One, probably not final, question is about crushed coral. Is it part of this equation? He did not use it I noticed but others do so who is right in this area?
  13. No my water is from an rodi water system and pulled before the DI part. It reads 7.0 PH TDS 0 GH 0 KH 0 I have the remineralization powder for either GH and KH or just GH but the PH down I bought was API and that is the problem. It's ingredient is Sulphuric Acid and I dont want to use it. If the substrate will handle the issue GREAT and I wont worry about it.
  14. Sorry maybe I was not clear I have 7.0 PH and from what I have read, Crystal shrimp want parameters in the 6.0 range so I need to lower from 7.0 to 6.0 and I really do not want to use API's Sulphuric Acid if I do not absolutely have to. Seachem Buffer raises PH and I need it to go in the other direction or do I have the whole thing messed up in my head.
  15. Will active soils raise my already high PH? I can keep the TDS low but have no idea how to lower the PH to a level Crystal Shrimp can live with. I will try and check out the Seachem product and see what it does. Thank you for the info.
  16. 1. Cory mention a certain substrate in a recent YouTube Video and I just caught part of it so am not sure what he said. He was talking about breeding Crystals and I have an interest in doing that so I would like to know what he used to be successful. 2. My RO water also come out as 7.0 with a TDS of 0 and I know the PH is high for Crystals but I dislike using API PH down as it uses Sulphuric Acid to accomplish it. I just find it creepy to use Sulphuric Acid for anything let alone what animals will swim in. Does anyone use anything else to lower their PH? If so can you make suggestions.
  17. First I want to thank everyone who replied. It has been a very educational experience and for someone who is always curious about the Aquarium hobbies it has opened my eyes into a world I have wanted to play with but now realize it just is not what I can handle. For whatever reason you put "Salt" in front of water and instantly the price of everything goes sky high. Take the humble Goby. The price for freshwater Gobies is in the neighborhood of $10 but the "Salt" variety runs around $60. The effort factor goes up to. I love my Aquariums and they have always brought me a lot of joy which could be why my house if filled with them. 9 total with a 75 gallon coming (talk about a lack of real estate). I have recently had to overcome well water challenges in a Volcanic active area to keep everyone happy hand healthy and so far I have enjoyed success with very few deaths other than shipping mishaps. I enjoy my beautiful Fish and Invertebrates and they supply me with a reason to get up in the mornings (that and my patient service dog). This topic seems to be of interest to a lot of budding "Salt" water enthusiasts. So I am glad I asked a question of value to the community. I have learned so much about two species that live in my tanks currently and I enjoy. I had no idea of their origins and I guess I am not alone in that ignorance. This has not only enlightened me but I hope others too. There is a whole lot we don't know about what swims around entertaining us daily. It is a good thing to learn things and I thank you all.
  18. bought 2 one for set up and 1 for maint. Thanks for the tip, I really appreciate your help in this endeavor.
  19. If I don't use my RO water, I would start with absurdly hard water with a PH over 8.0. Trying to get a better PH tester so I know what it is exactly. RO is 7.0 and I have the Shrimp Mineral GH & KH already for another Freshwater aquarium that needs softer water than I can provide otherwise. I am a little confused on what salt to but for the set up and maintenance. Do I need Coral Salt or will API salt do the same thing.?
  20. What about the original set up of the tank and the filtration. I like that I can go to the low end of the salinity as that is the direction I wanted to head to. I also want some plants in the tank for the snails and shrimp.
  21. I would like to set up an extra 10 gallon tank I have as a brackish water tank to raise nerite snails and amano shrimp. I have never had one before so and help and direction you can provide would be welcome. So direction on how to acclimate the two from fresh to brackish water would be helpful also.
  22. In am also looking to set up a 20 long with schooling fish but was thinking about pea puffers as a center piece fish. Any thoughts as to filtration and tank mates? I prefer hang on back variety since they are easier for me to handle with my disability.
  23. They look just like the actual animal.
  24. OK made me laugh. They finally moved out streets "gang" mails box back some and put a turn out area in because cars were in the way of the cattle. So, I get it. Thanks for the laugh.
  25. Hey, I didn't say that I did not like country music, just love variety. I was cleaning "windows" (fish tanks) so I thought of Van Morrison. I am a country girl at heart and use to be able to Two Step or Country Swing with the best of them. I live where the cows outnumber the humans and our rendition of a traffic jam is when they herd the stock down the highway. I also can do tooling for Saddles, and make a crowd pleasing Tiramisu. So Variety in all things even fish is not a bad thing. PS Not really my cups of tea on the last one either.
