Dang, that tank has angels too🤣

yes yes yes.. "Angelfish and rams should not go together," but I never had any instances with them both, and plus I have midnights so twice more aggression but only saw aggression during spawning, so other than that I believe that they could 😄

Alright everyone I would like to hear everyones suggestions on if I should add the following and if so which ones and how many? I have a 14g cube tank with a male dumbo halfmoon betta as my main focus. I am considering the following in order of preference:

    - Tetras (specifically rummy nose)

    - hillside loach

    - otos

    - kuhli loach

    - corys

scrap the rummy nose they need at least a 3foot tank, hillstream loach usually need cooler water then bettas, otos should do fine just grow enough biolfilm for them to eat, kuhli loachs could work but thats if you choose between corys, I dont recommend any corydora species except pygmy.

Who can tell me a little about Archers. My LFS has clouded and small scale in fairly regularly. What’s the difference between the two, any issues with aggression? I’m thinking of trying them with my lungfish in a 90g

Clouded archers are brackish so they must be kept in brackish water, small scale are true freshwater and smaller then the clouded. Clouded(8-9inches) Small(6inches). Your best shot is to keep small scale as both lungfish and small scale can be kept in freshwater.

    Hi all,

I’m looking for some advice here. I’ve never purchased fish online so given the cost I’m a little hesitant about it. I’m not looking for anything “fancy” per say, tetras, maybe some pea puffers and pleco’s.
I’m considering this because my “local”, 1hr each way LFS, has been very limited in stocking options with no end in sight. Any good or bad experiences that can be shared would be appreciated.

Located in North East Ohio if that helps.

Every website that sells fish has pros and cons, a tip I would give is to search up reviews of the website on forums or Reddit posts and see how people rate it. Most of the time websites selling fish are always great, I have ordered fish multiple times and never got a DOA, there are DOAs for some people's cases but know that refund is always there. A con is that the fish might not be well suited to your water, assuming you use your tap, some fish might acclimate not well and fall apart, that's why it's always recommended to buy fish from lfs since they are more acclimated to your waters.

My 2 albinos sometimes do this behavior where one becomes kind of grumpy and pushes sand around, opening his mouth wide and shoveling the sand, and they both twitch like in the video. Sometimes they will open their mouths very big like going 😮 and then appear to have a confrontation?

Is this breedinh behavior? Or maybe marking territory? They never fight or lock lips but they surely look grumpy.

Looks like breeding behavior to me.

You'll be gone for a month?

How many tanks do you have and what type of fish? (I feel like you may have discus...)

For that length of time I would look into a maintenance service

Haha, no discus, was going to get some again after my trip. I have about 4 tanks, 2 not really worried about because both are a no filter no waterchange heavily planted tank, other hand I have a 55 decently planted with large school of cardinal, rummy, 3 midnight rams, a angelfish pair, 2 sae, and a lot of kulhis and a saltwater tank but we like to stick in freshwater😄

I better get only one as well then.

How was the algae eating situation for your experience. Good enough?

They eat black beard algae, hair algae extremely well, they ate most it off my vals, and I have seen them eat a quite other few as well. Got some otos with them as well haha.

Do they fight with each other? I remember reading they can be territorial especially in number 2, so either single or at least 3 is better.

    What's your experience?

I won't lie they do get aggressive sometimes but not a huge lot, they are still 4-5inches and I was thinking of returning 1 back so I can just keep one full grown sae.

    Update:

The custom made tank is here. I also got a new 100w heater, AC70 (found it locally, so didn't have to order from Amazon Germany and pay a lot more!), 90cm plant light and 2x 8Liters of Neo Aquasoil.

    image.jpeg.948303ad4b7a4125618c53fcf892a98b.jpeg

The straphor under didn't make me feel comfy enough. We talked with @nabokovfan87 some, and I'm planning to get an aquarium mat instead. Sera (Sera Thermosafe mat) has one that perfectly fits 100x40cm, which is exactly my tank size. And Creaqua, which is a well known local aquarium brand here, has one that looks like rubber, 150x50cm. Planning to get the bigger one and cut it I guess.

    https://www.sera.de/us/product/terrarium/sera-thermo-safe/

    https://www.creaqua.com.tr/tr/akvaryumlar-ve-ekipmanlar/9-creaqua-aquamat.html

    Any ideas?

Also I am looking for some algae eaters that would handle the 27C-28C (80-82F) that rams enjoy. I currently have rams, honey gourami, sterbai cories, rabbit snails, L199 and rummy nose tetras that will move to this tank from their 29g.

I've been considering SAE and panda garras. But seems like they like it a bit lower temps. Any suggestions are welcomed as tank mates, especially algae eaters. @DiscusLover @Fish Folk Any ideas guys?

I have 2 sae in my 55 they can tolerate up to 82 in some articles that I found and I keep my tank in 80-81 and they do great.

I'm trying to decide which tank size to go with for a single female betta.  Some people say 10, but others say that 10 gallons can feel too big to a betta.  I'd rather go bigger and have a more stable tank, but she seems so content.  Thoughts?

If your going to keep a single betta with no tankmates, a 5 gallon is okay. But always shoot for bigger, a 10 gallon is sufficient for a single betta it doesn't really matter unless adding tankmates.

I have a 36-gal bow front tank that has been running freshwater for over a year.  I moved all the fish I had in there to a larger tank and want to convert this one into a saltwater tank.  I know I am going to have to cycle and change things.  I am making the assumption that the beneficial bacteria is a different type since it will have to thrive in saltwater vs fresh.  Does anyone have any tips or advice on this transition? I have heard I also need to get rid of the substrate that I have in there too, which I thought was odd but I am up for it.  Any advice is welcome.  I am doing FWLR tank so no reefs or anything too complicated right now.

Saltwater tank you must need an rodi unit first off, second its best to get sand specifically marine sand as it helps to speed up the cycle and helps to buffer the water. Live rock also helps to cycle tanks quicker.

    Hello everyone,

I want to add a Pleco to my 30 gallon community tank. What Plecos do you guys recommend me for this tank size and that it isn't shy and doesn't hide a lot?

    Thank you in advance

    Have a great day!

Dwarf snowball pleco or a clown pleco just any pleco that stays under 5 inches

  14. I personally think drip acclimating is a waste of time. I just drop and plop. The reason why I believe this is that a fish won't acclimate to your water quickly through drip acclimation. The fish would need lots of time to acclimate to your water either way and if fish could get used to water that quickly, drastic water parameter changes would have never been an issue. Even for sensitive species, rams or otocinclus, or even shrimp, I float them for 20 minutes and then drop them into the tank. Less stressful and less time wasted.

Would they make an okay tank mate in this tank, or would they potentially be bullies with this stocking? Have you ever kept them with shrimp and snails?

    Amazing  looking fish 🙂

Mine are very small yet, like a half size of a honey gourami. I assume around 1 month old or so?

All I see, for now, is they sometimes turn around each other in a circle trying to be bossy, and rarely shoo each other away by pecking and following for a short distance.

Thats normal for rams in general but be aware if its gets too extreme.

Mine can be black/blues too. I don't know really.

Idk if they are pure black as juveniles, but mine currently look like the juviniles of black and blues.

If both have similar juvenile phase, then I don't know.

    they currently look like these:

    Hey guys,

Coming from cichlids are cichlids perspective:

Has anyone tried keeping apistos and rams together? In what gallon/liters of a tank with what kind of a setup worked the best for you, if you ever did?

My black rams don’t seem to care anyone in the tank, but they barely sometimes show dominance towards each other for a couple minutes and then let it go.

I am really enjoying the cichlids lately as I haven’t been keeping them for ages. Would it be okay to keep 3 black rams with 2 apistos 1m:1f) for example?

Would they bully each other or just their own species mainly?

I really like some apistos, mainly agassizi fire reds and borellii opals specifically. Just in case the species matters.

the other tank mates are honey gourami, sterbai corys, rummy noses and one L199 pleco.

    the tank is 100x40x40cm (160liters/42g)

@anewbie maybe you’d like to share your opinion/experience

I also have black rams and well, they are like devils. I had two pairs in my 55 and my pair had killed off one of the female and left a male. I believe that it could come with really huge risks. I'm not sure how old your rams are but as they get older their aggression will spike. Black rams are notoriously known for being extremely aggressive and it shows, they even go after my 7inch angelfish... I would say to just stick with one of them.  image.jpeg.87fc9c4ee842d3bda50b630ab3e24750.jpeg

    Hey guys,

    Hope your are doing well!

As I have set up my new tank like around 2 months ago by now, I have moved some of my fish from my 29g to the new tank.

So today, I've decided to get myself a new friend. As the title says, it is a black ram!

I've made my research and watched Dean's video and so on. But I wanna hear about the personal experiences of you!

My LFS said they have been keeping them on around 24C at the store!! I know they like it much higher. So I've acclimated him around 26 C and increased it to 27C by now. Planning to keep it 28C in the following days, to make sure it is not a sudden increase for the fish both for the ram and other members/plants of the tank. Everything else I keep in the tank can easily like 28C, and My tank reaches 32-33Cs during summer without any harm.

I would love to hear some experiences about rams, and tips and personal experiences of any sort you'd like to share as they are somehow being called "sensitive".

Other members of the tank are honey gourami, L199, sterbai corys, rabbit snails, rummy noses and a borneo sucker.

I wanna move the borneo to my other tank, but catching it is mission impossible. I gave up after 3 times, as it cause stress on other fish which is not worth it. He seems happy so I let it go. He was happy even when it reached 33Cs. so yeah

    Questions:

    • Is 28C (82.4F) good enough for the ram? Seems like it is the common point for everything in the tank that can enjoy. It will go higher than that during summer naturally anyway.
    • The tank is quite planted. There is a pleco cave, and cave like place made of stone and driftwood.  Would getting another ram be suitable in a 29g tank with other tankmates, or would they be bully vs others/between each other? Is it okay to keep one M and one F juviniles and expect them to pair up, or they need to be in big groups and expected to pair themselves?
    • I assume mine is a male, what is the best way to differ a male from female? Internet pics seemed a bit confusing.
    • What happens if a black ram male and golden ram female mates, for example? Do they go back to original GBR color mostly or babies are mixture of the two?

    Please share your experiences! 🙂

Would be nice to see you guys' opinions and experiences if you want to share! @Guppysnail @Fish Folk @dasaltemelosguy @DiscusLover

Rams can have very different tolerance, its different if your getting one imported or ones that have bred in the US. One, rams are not that sensitive at all, if you keep your water parameters steady and clean your fine. Temperature wise don't be too worried about it, 80-84 I have kept even up to 86 they all do great, however they burn out quickly if higher then 84 so leave it in the 80-82 range. I would be a little worried if it goes above 86 or below 80. Depending on what ram strains you get, you should be fine with 1 m and 1 f. But for my more aggressive strains my midnights I keep another dither doesn't matter what gender as a trio helps to spread aggression. Based on how a lot have been bred its nearly almost to sex them nowadays, but a common feature you can look for is, one their size obviously males or larger then female and secondly, the pink belly that some females have, it depends on what strain but for electric and midnights nearly impossible to find a pink belly. If you breed a gold and midnight, you will prob get golds/midnights, or gold/blueblack/midnight some midnight strains have 3 or 2 choices, my pair is 3 luckily.

The water we have here is very hard. I put some almond leaves in to help, but I clearly need to add more. I didn’t realize the ph was so high either. I have attached photos of the tank setup and breeding box, also. Can I use methylene blue in the breeder box? It filters water into the tank and I read that it’s not safe for fish to be in. So I did attempt a dip in it, but I didn’t add it to the breeder box itself.

Ah thats the issue, your water hardness. Ph is not an issue at all, I have seen people hatch and raise cory fry in ph of 7.8. You might have to use distilled water or an rodi unit to make the water soft to hatch the eggs.

I have a breeding pair of sterbai corydoras who are faithfully breeding weekly. I have been collecting the eggs because if not, the majority of them get eaten. I have left some in the tank to see if they survive and they all usually end up with fungus over them. The ones I have been removing which is between 20-30 each time, I move into a fluval breeding box off their aquarium and I have only had 4 actually hatch. They sadly did not end up surviving because they swam into the divider and get stuck 😞 I have Java moss, and almond leaves in the aquarium, keeping the nitrates at little to nothing and the temp is around 78… Why are the eggs all dying? I have even tried dipping them in methylene blue, but it doesn’t seem to work. Does anyone know what could be going wrong?? Please help!

    8A967E0E-D918-440C-ACC7-D186EAA67E85.jpeg

What are your water parameters? A key reason could be that there is too much hardness in the water for the eggs to hatch

that won't destroy plant's or get too big. I have 6 albino Cory's but they are more into

I don't want something that's going to over take the aquarium like guppies or shrimp
I've had guppies & they are prolific in breeding, I'm not really into shrimp for the job
but more into some kind of fish that won't eat or destroy my plants, that's the main thing.

So what would you suggest me getting? I've been watching videos on this subject but

what your thoughts & experience has or is with algae eaters, Thank You for your help ❤

Angelfish become aggressive as they mature more. As a pecking order is set and territories are going to be established. Nothing you could do much about it but just removing the eye of sight with decorations to decrease some of that aggression.

I am sorry if this is a duplicate, but I did look first!  Do blue rams need to be kept as part of a school, or are they ok as just a pair in a community tank with other species?  I have seen conflicting information and wanted to get feedback from people who may actually keep them in their own tanks.  Thanks for any help!

I have kept rams in single, duo, trio, and group. A ram does not care if it's by itself or with others. I would however recommend if keeping a trio or a group, keep 1 male to 2 females. This will lower aggression. It is also based off of the tank size.
