  1. Suck to start the siphon!

Not cleaning siphons! (Water is just going out, not in, so… idc)

Also water changes used to be weekly, but now I just read the water tests weekly and change it if a parameter is not in range.

Overfeed. 🥲 Who else is guilty of this?  Fess up!

    Not have snails

    😭💔

Keeping shrimp in tap water (But like, LFS said they were tap water raised, so it’s fine I guess. The shrimps seem happy; have built up a nice colony)

Not clean the filter mechanisms. Unless it sounds funny.

Siphon into the sand. Some say don’t disturb it because of the anerobic bacteria. But things looks better overall when I siphon it.

I don’t completely clean things I take out of a tank. Quick rinse in tap water. That’s it. (Unless it’s coming from a quarantine tank, then full disinfect)

Use garlic and higher temp to cure ich.

😞  Give me like a good 3 hours!  Sometimes it just always looks a bit messy and it's tough, I totally get where you're coming from.  I was so fed-up with the tank this month just because of how dirty the sand was getting on me.

I think we even have the same type of sand?

I have PFS. Even when I siphon and “turn over” the sand - that used to work to refresh it and get it looking new again, but now even the stuff  under the top layer is dirty/stained. It would need a bucket rinse. But that would kill all the bb. Still, I think there’s bb on enough other things in the tank that it should be ok to rinse it.

My favorite thing about sand is literally being a goofy kid whenever I do water changes and playing with it like I'm at the beach. For me it's my highly underrated, trivial, little bit of fun.

Ick. This is my sand. I would not play in it. Just messing with it kicks up dust clouds like Pig Pen. It get maintained every week, but always looks about the same. So I’m figuring you probably have newer sand, newer tank, and/or lighter stocking.

I thought about this. But I don’t think it’s a good option for me.

Reasons…as much for me to get opinions as an explanation as to why this I dont think will work for me.

    - my nitrate from the tap @25-35 issue. This mean I must stay hyper vigilant about no excess organics decaying in the tank.

-the roots on one of my crypts has started clogging the middle section. I need to get a thick layer of detritus already built up out.

-my Pygmy and panda Cory new hatches dive through the cracks of the gravel. There is currently a fry every inch the size of an eyelash hidden. When I vac I siphon a gallon at a time to a white bucket and retrieve the fry.

-The stock in this tank is stupid now. Not intentionally but I can’t figure out fish birth control to save my life 🤣

    STOCK

mom n dad full grown bn pleco- several stray babies from other spawns where I missed stray eggs and a new batch coming out of the cave right now. The girl who buys my fish and another retailer requested a batch to split.

My Pygmy Cory group grew from what I could not catch Roughly 20 and untold number of fry

10 melini is now 20 adults 20-30 frustratingly fast young juveniles. And a living substrate of those fry

I think my adult CPD group has now grown to 15-20 plus wigglers and clingers everywhere

If this tank, which is supposed to be a retirement tank when I’m done breeding each,(fish did not get that memo obviously) is so polluted with fry vacuum is insanely hard. The Cory fry don’t do well when the substrate is not tidy.

Last reason… SAND IS EASY TO MAINTAIN  gravel is not 🤣

    My tank is

    Sand cap 2”

    Gravel

    Ugf plate

The plant roots eat the gunk in the gravel, and the sand cap kinda like “seals” the organics down below. The 2” depth of the sand allows anerobic bacteria for the sublayer. But it takes an awful lot of substrate. Mine is like this because of the evolution of the tank; it was not my initial setup.

Idk, I think sand gets to a point where is looks cruddy no matter what you do. I want to go to the caribsea stuff like you have.

Crisis averted…temporarily. I lifted the plate and siphoned him out with a wide hose

    LOOOOOOOOL the water slide ride

New issue..so much gravel under the plate it will not work properly

No worries, just remove riser tubes, top holes with substrate, add different type of filter. That’s my current setup, there is still a UGF plate in my tank

Mine was the same way.... 😂.  He would wait for the active fish to go away then would go in or he'd do what the amano's do and strike first, try to run back to his little territory with the spoils.

Snoop has taken a liking to Snellos. But I also make sure I get some vibra bites or frozen foods down to her too. Plus her sand sifting hobby gets her some noms.

i meant like personality and interaction and intelligence wise. sorry for the confusion.

She does have a personality and tries to get my attention even when I’m across the room. But she also acts like a dum dum at times too. For example, when I’m feeding a tank, there will be 18 fish going after food and she doesn’t realize there is food. She is just milling about.

  8. Nibbles isn’t doing well. A few days of being in the same spot… and Nibbles is usually quite active. He has a green algae or fuzz on his shell as well that wasn’t there last week. I’ve been suffering with the flu for 4 days as well and had to take some time off work to stay in bed. This evening I moved Nibbles from the specimen container tank to the sour cream container for observation, but there is no response. He is so very small that I cannot do the usual odor check or anything. We are talking about a snail the size of a piece of gravel. And with flu-ridden sinuses I doubt I’d smell anything anyway.  I floated the container in the shrimp tank so there is temperature control for him, and if he has passed he cannot foul the water for other inhabitants. I took a photo of his position, and I will check on him again in the morning.

For those of you that don’t know Nibbles’ story: he is an unidentified snail that has stayed a pipsqueak. Before we learned about Reverse Respiration, I used to salt dip new plants, but he survived that. I don’t know if he hatched from an egg in my tank or if he was attached to the plants. Technically I don’t know the gender either, so I just say he because I’ve never seen any egg production or live bearing or anything. But he didn’t have a mate either, so- idk.IMG_4671.jpeg.3d8f0d530b7cdeff6579ec6c4796619f.jpeg

He used to live with the shrimps but had to be moved to the specimen container with a bunch of trumpet snails so I could treat the shrimp tank. That has been his home, and it has a light and a little DIY filter and plants. I supplement with a tiny bit of Repashy powder once or twice a week, and sometimes a little bacter ae. The specimen container gets water tested once a week along with the other tanks as well, and it has algae on the walls for the snails to eat.
