beaka
I am trying something different with a new 6 g Betta tank. River pebbles and sand. It's going to be a planted tank. Do I put the sand over the stones or the stones over the sand? I intend to use root tabs too. But what do you think? (I could also use crushed lava rock, what do you think?)
FishyJames
I would go with the sand over the pebbles. That way the roots of plants are in the pebbles. The sand will eventually settle down into the pebbles leaving a unique look. My opinion Jim
Squid88
depends if you're gravel vacuuming or not. I use a gravel vac and have both sand and stones in my planted tank and the stones usually sink to the bottom as I sift through the substrate. I originally added the sand first and stones on top, and now the sand is on top.
Tanked
I'm experimenting with crushed lava now. Containerized sand surrounded by crushed lava hides the container and can have a striking effect both with the plants and lighter colored fish. Mixed sand and lava may become an optical disaster ...or not, depending on your taste.
