That's so cool how many people have said that messing around with something like Triops,  Sea Monkeys or Fairy shrimp, got them back into or started them into aquariums! 😎

The other funny thing about all this, is that this  conversation came from me just asking about horticulture sand. :classic_laugh:

I like the size and color of these different sands/gravels and it seems like a lot of 'critters' and humans do too! :classic_biggrin:.  Oh yeah, no home depot here.  Small town...

Made the choice of 'sand', I think of it more of a tiny gravel....When does it start to be considered sand? :classic_rolleyes: .  Rinsed it, not bad, just a little dust and some organic material. Put some in the 3.7 and my Triops pool. Looks good to me in the 3.7 and the Triops love it!  :classic_laugh: Dig Dig Dig.  Weird little vernal pool critters. 😎  I'm already looking forward to trying the other, 'sand'.  Slow down man! 🤣

TRIOPS!

I had triops as a kid and loved them! Maybe now that I understand keeping things that live in water I've be able to actually get them to grow as big as yours
I'm curious, do you know if they'll eat duckweed?

@Schuyler That's a good question. 🤔  I do have duckweed in all my tanks, although, not on purpose. :classic_rolleyes: :classic_laugh:  There is a little bit in the small tank I'm keeping the Triops in. But I've never notice them eat it...

I know they used them to eat weeds in rice fields. Seems like a good experiment.

We went to the beach today and roamed around looking for driftwood and colorful stones.  While poking around in the beach rocks, it suddenly occurred to me this layer of sand/ gravel looks like the perfect size to put in a 10 gal we're setting up! :classic_rolleyes::classic_laugh:

Do you boil it/bake it to kill all the things and remove potential contaminants?

I like all the colors. Thanks, Mother Nature!

After the last of the Triops reached the end of its short lifespan, I decided to turn the 3.7 gal into a shrimp tank. I've removed and dried the sand that I think has Triops eggs in it, (a project for a later date.):classic_biggrin:.  So far so good

First time I've had a banana plant send up a lilly pad!  And after having a dwarf aquarium lily for about six months,  the bulb separated from the plants.   I put it into the tank as well, and after several weeks it's starting to grow again! Such a cool plant! 😎 😁

@Chick-In-Of-TheSea. No boiling or baking. :classic_biggrin:I just go with a fresh water rinse and let it sit outside in a little bucket full of water for a few weeks. I figured there'd be no fresh water biologics to worry about because it came from salt water. 🤔

So far, So good..:classic_rolleyes:

Gotta love the gravel sand we have on the PNW side! It looks spectacular under water too! The freshwater might not kill the things. But a little UV from our friendly sun does!

the microorganisms probably:

Local nursery has gotten more odd and interesting decorative stone just in. :classic_laugh:

Kind of wondering how red cherry shrimp would look crawling around on this color? 🤔

For some reason I can't just go get gravel at the fish store! :classic_laugh: :classic_laugh:

Tadpoles appear to like browsing through the gravel for food. They like the wafers! :classic_biggrin:

Hopeing to grow Triops again... after the Tadpole adventure!  The trick is going to be, moveing these guys outside before they hop out of the tank! :classic_laugh:. Any one have experience with Tapoles?

I use that exact sand mixed with pool filter sand! Love the grain size reminds me of the ACO sand from back in the day. I bought 4 bags on sale was like $12. Not bad price.

I was going to buy pool sand but they only had Clorox brand, so I used playground sand and pea gravel
