Plants only tank - Heater Required?

Recommended Posts

As @Theplatymaster said, "it depends on the plants.

My unheated project tank is 59-60 degrees this time of year. I am growing PSO, Wisteria, Italian Val, and even Duckweed. These plants almost died in the 76 degree planted tank. They grow slower, and they share the same water, but the light in the planted tank is better.  I think that some plants will adapt to colder water as long as their other needs are met.

My shrimp tank is unheated and gets between 60-70f. Plants are growing faster than in my other tanks.

Plants in the tank:

  • myrio green
  • rotala hra
  • ludwigia arcuata
  • ammania gracillis
  • purple cabomba (only two stems)
  • dwarf sag
  • bacopa
  • RRF

All these plants (except RRF and ammania) are growing in my other tanks that are heated to 79f.

Yeah. That's kind of where I'm at. My usual jam is epiphytes, mosses (like it cooler), and stems.

Things like PSO, Water sprite, moneywort, hornwort, all those things that go crazy, that's what I tend not to want to grow and attempt to try other things.  DHG is a big one for me. I need to get it going. Same thing with the ones in my tank that I need to recover, anubias and a few others.
