Milburn95
Hey everyone! I’ve just been sat next to my tank and the heater has exploded, half shattered in the tank and the other half jumped out and hit the rough! It was so dramatic! It’s not even like I’d done a water change and it was fully submerged! Anyway my question is, is there anything harmful I heaters that could harm my fish? I’ve removed all the glass but unsure if there’s anything else is there when manufactured that could cause trouble… Will be wearing eye protection from now on! Anjum
Dang that's frightening! There might be industrial chemicals used in or around the components when they're manufactured, but probably not any used directly in the manufacture of the heater. I think the bigger concern is the stray electricity that could be running through the water!
PlaneFishGuy
Do they contain mercury as part of the temperature sensing??? I would think that would be visible in a tank.... Were you on 110 power in the US?
Biotope Biologist
They don’t contain anything harmful. It’s just glass, ceramic, and heater coils. Good thing you were sitting right there though. The electric discharge is enough to kill most fish.

They looked someone stunned for 30 seconds when it happened but then continued on as normal, im guessing it was just the bang that shocked them On 1/19/2023 at 4:08 PM, Anjum said: Dang that's frightening!
