LadyoftheLake
What is the best strategy for adding schooling fish to you tank? do you quarantine a large group together and then add them a few at a time to the tank? how do you keep ammonia down in the quarantine tank? do you buy only a few at a time, put them through 4+ weeks of quarantine and then add them to the tank and start quarantining the next batch? how do we add enough of them so they aren't stressed without causing an ammonia spike? KBOzzie59
I suppose it all depends on the size of the tank and such. How large of school and what fish? I would dirty up (cycle) a couple of sponge filters then add them when you add the fish, let the tank catch up, then remove the filters one at time, remove one then wait 3'ish days and remove the second. Monitor for ammonia daily until things level out, water change as needed. Maybe more plants as well. Another thing I do is use Java Fern bundles to help gobble up the waste (but I have a truck load of the stuff).
Andy's Fish Den
When I have had this same dilemma, I got as many as I felt was safe for the quarantine tank, which was a 10 gallon. I kept them for a few weeks, treating, making sure they ate good etc. put them in display tank. Then get next batch of fish and do the same.
