DIY lid hinges

I use the polycarbonate twinwall paneling to make lids. It’s only 6mm thick and works very well. As for hinges there’s plenty of options: C63C57C2-1A69-446D-8249-2C4AFBD8D36F.png.a1f1adae0bec25fb9032daeb60975022.png

but I’m using this material instead of glass to save money, using any of these options gets price per lid higher than glass. So for last year I didn’t even use hinges just dealt with loose lids kind of a pain but…. Then my wife bought these for something else and didn’t use them, as soon as I seen them I thought of this.

cut lid to size, make cut to separate into front and back, add handle, and place into position.294BBB13-9968-490A-B5B0-CC696FC58BC8.jpeg.3421b27e27c958a240485e7ffe6431bd.jpeg

I’ve had a couple sets on over a month and don’t see any problems. Actually works extremely well. Have to be sure to keep just a slight bit of distance between the two panels or they will bind but that is easy to adjust.

Not all nerm heros wear capes!
This is gold!

Thank you so much for posting this. I have been struggling with evaporation on a rack of ten gallons. The tanks are set in a row longways so traditional lids are not working, nor do I want to buy a bunch of glass ones.
Now I have a solution!

Glad it helped. The polycarbonate panel is a great solution. I have tried to buy glass lids and they never fit right for me. And these strips for hinges work so well and are so cheap compared to the acrylic.

I also have made lids for a lot of my tanks with the polycarbonate panels. I looked for cheap hinges and have found a very cheap option: clear packing tape. I have been using and not had any problems with it, and if it gets nasty cruddy looking, its super easy to peel off and put a new piece on.

And it would help with evaporation. I need to add this to mine, great idea.👍

That`s interesting but looks like light would be dimmed or distorted, I have always had glass lids, they`re easy to maintain, never had one break, the only pain is that pesky plastic piece that needs trimmed to fit accessories. I don`t have to worry about space so I can see where a glass lid could be a problem.

True it is a bit different but to me it’s not a problem. Plants grow and that’s good enough for now. Weighing the pros and cons of both it is very close for me on which one I’d rather have.
