Phoenix1391
Anyone know a vendor that you can get large Java ferns? I just bought 3 “large mats” of Java from buce plants and while it was a decent amount, they were all small clippings tied together. Each rhizome is literally just one leaf. I don’t want to just call out buce though as I have bought from 2 other places that was the same. im going to be re scaping my 125 and I want to incorporate a lot of Java as it is going to be low tech and Java stands up to my large pleco.
Patrick_G
I haven’t seen any large rhizomes for sale, but the Aquarium Coop Java Fern pots usually have at least two good sized plants in them. I’ve had good luck with both varieties they sell.
tolstoy21
I find the Buce Plant java fern “mother pots” to be decently sized plants.
Odd Duck
I was going to suggest exactly as @tolstoy21did. Try to find “mother pots” someplace since they are more likely to be bigger plants. The issue with bigger Java ferns is the risk of fronds melting back, but they will often produce baby plantlets when melting happens. That doesn’t help your goal of having large plants. If you can find nice tall ferns and keep them from melting, you’re set. But that can be challenging, for sure. Good luck in your quest!
Patrick_G
Thanks for the tip, @Emily in Everett, there’s a decent amount of locals on the forum.
