TankofFish
@StreetwiseI have never used organic soil but I'm about to set up a new tank( I have a catfish that has out grown his 30gallon), so with this said will any organic soil work even the ones you can buy at home depot??

Streetwise
Hi @TankofFish, I would recommend that you buy and read this: https://dianawalstad.com I have the Apple Books version so I can bookmark stuff digitally. I get organic topsoil from a local composter for $1 a scoop. I recommend 1-1.5 inches of organic topsoil capped with a modest amount of 2-4 mm gravel. Get some Mopani wood, and a bunch of live plants: https://www.aquariumcoop.com/collections/live-plants My aquarium journals focus on organic soil tanks.
Tamitha
I used a generic organic soil I found at home depot in one of my tanks, it has worked out great. I capped it with sand from a sand pit on my property. The tank is about a year old and is by far my most successful.
Streetwise
If you buy soil in bags, just avoid anything with manure, which will be too powerful, or white perlite bits, which will float.

Low maintenance, but it can be slow to start compared to using aquarium soil
