  1. Hi all,

Yesterday I noticied my ranchu was staying at the bottom of the tank.

Visually, I see nothing wrong in tems of disease. The other ranchus are doing well and active.

He still moves around but mostly stays at the bottom like in the video. I dosed general cure into the tank after a 25% water change yesterday.

    pH - 7.6
    Nitrates - 5ppm
    Nitrites - 0
    Ammonia - 0
    Temperature - 24 celsius / 75F

I'm thinking it's an internal issue? he's able to swim up towards the surface just fine, and I don't see any like tilting or sideways swimming from him.

    Any advice?

I've uploaded a video of him to youtube cause I can't attach it with the post:

Rams do require very clean water, as in lots of biofiltration.

I think they will be fine in a large tank like that. Just give them hiding places.

It's kinda funny you mention that because I'm struggling to keep nitrates high for my plants currently 😂

But thank you for the tip! I might rescape the tank soon to create more hiding places.

  3. @xXInkedPhoenixXThey're listed as Mikrogeophagus ramirezi, or the blue ram. I have a few options with the color type though.

Yeah, I was also thinking about aggression from a breeding pair, but I don't know how a group dynamic would affect this. I've also heard rams are usually peaceful too, thank you for your comment!

  4. @Seattle_Aquarist Hey, it's funny you ask cause I was just thinking yesterday to give you an update ahaha.

I have been dosing iron and potassium for the past 3 weeks, and they definitely look a lot healthier. Some of the old leaves look more green and healthy, and new growth looks good too. Still figuring out if I need to increase the dosage for the tank as a whole but for now I'm slowly increasing week to week and seeing how the other plants do as well.

  5. Hi,

Last saturday I got a group of 10 julii cories, and over the past week I've gotten 3 deaths. My parameters are 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites and 5ppm nitrates.

The rest of the fish look fine, my angels, platies and bn pleco are fine.

Is this just a case of new fish dying or should I be worried? I treated the cories with meds when I first got them too.

    Update.

I've removed the apistogramma because I couldn't stop his aggression towards the platies.

The old crypt leaves are starting to die off and new leaves are growing.

Algae is starting to grow which is great cause I'll be adding otos soon. My tanks always only grow the brown algae, I never get any other kinds of algae.

Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0 and Nitrates 10ppm or less. I've noticed my nitrates always stay around 10ppm or less, I haven't had to do a water change in about 2 weeks, just water top up.

  7. Hi everyone! Happy Holidays!

I have a community of platies and a single apistogramma male. I've been noticing that he's been aggressive to the platies and chasing them off. There's about 10 platies.

The tank is planted with lots of caves and hiding places but he seemed to have claimed most of the lower bottom as his territory. Now, he was added the tank a good time before I got the platies.

Any tips? I thought about removing him from the tank into a separate tank for a week or two and hopefully then reintroduce him and have him not be so aggressive.

  8. Got some different types of java fern and a hygrophila.

I got rid of a piece of wood to open up the swimming space more and to plant the hygrophila.

The monte carlo and crypts are looking good and seemed to have adapted to the tank now and hopefully will start growing more.

Excited to see the tank grow more. Thinking of adding some platies to the tank soon! and possibly a small bn

I think corys will be great. I am part of the panda Cory appreciation society please join!

That wood is just begging for a smallish ancistrus pleco species and some otocinclus when the tanks grown in more and there’s enough algae for them.

I'll definitely look into that! is the society part of the forum?

definitely would love a pleco in there, not sure about otos though since in my past setups, i never grew enough algae for them

Are you going to get corys still? I like this new direction of south american fish 🙂

Yes! definitely plan on getting around 8-10 cories for the tank in a few weeks! and some cardinals too and possibly a bristlenose pleco, but will see how my water parameters are with all the bio load
