My bedroom/fish room/ hanging with friends room has been running out of space.

A friend got me a free 150 gallon but it took up so much space something needed to be done.

so I built a 6.5’ high bunk bed, started on it yesterday, finished it up today.  Also got my new 150 on a stand and filled.

Reminds me of my dorm room. I didn’t have nearly as many or as large tanks tho. Very cool project!

  2. Did a water change and recoded some medications in my 5.5 betta tank. I’m also cleaning out some decor from a gecko terrarium and setup my plants. And finally, I’m gonna try and tackle more of cleaning out this 10 gallon. It’s been sitting dry in a storage unit for several months and I’m finally able to get it out and set it up, but I found a dead rat in it so I have to clean the eco complete and Scrub the algae and nasty 💩 off the glass. Wish me luck.

  3. Update: it’s been about a week, I initially dosed Maracyn and General cure and did a 15 minute salt bath about a week ago. Today I did a water change, a 15 minute salt bath, and re dosed erythromycin and general cure. He’s eaten for me once a few days ago and seems to be moving around a little more but he mostly just stays in one spot. His eye has shown no improvement, if anything it looks like the black has grown and his eye lid has been moved further down. I’ve tried using a mirror to get a reaction and no response, so I believe he is blind. I am starting to think the black growth is a tumor and not Popeye, but I’m not really sure. I’ve never seen this before. If anyone has any idea or can point me in the right direction that would be great. Also the water is cloudy from the water change and the meds

  4. If I absolutely had to pick I would go with either Puffers, Bettas, or Plecos. Puffers are so inquisitive and interactive and something about their body shapes just draws me in, they’re so plump and cute 😂 Bettas have such personality and such a wide range of appearance and gorgeous colors and fins. Plecos come in such a wide variety of patterns and I love looking through the tank and finding them. This was such a tough question 😂

Salt will kill your plants. Narrite snails are from brackish water and will be fine with salt. I sugest a quarantine tank.

I know salt will be okay with some shrimp, because they are pretty hardy and nerite snails eggs actually hatch in brackish water so salt will be okay. And as far as I know maracyn has had no effect on any of my inverts.

Ok I’ll setup a qt tank in the morning, thank you!

  6. My issue that I came across is that my sink doesn’t have threads of any sort. I love in an apartment and so I couldn’t mess with the plumbing in any way or replace the sink (Altho we had an unrelated issue and our bathroom is torn apart rn anyways) and so I needed a way to get the python to attach to the sink. My friend works at my LFS and she hooked me up with some excess tubing. I got 2 different sizes and ended up going with the smaller one to get a snug fit. And snug it was. I used a blow dryer on high for 10 minutes to get it to fit, but it worked and I was able to fill up the first tank in the new “fishroom” (check my college apartment log for that) and now the python works wonderfully.

  7. I recently got my first python system and from the getgo had issues with my sink and had to DIY a new way to use it. I wanted to make this thread a way for other people to show off their systems and if anyone has any tips or tricks to be able to post that here.

My largely useless comment is that I wish I had the space. Admittedly I am small potatoes and don't have a need. As if we "need" any of this I guess.

I know there would be a huge concern with cross contamination, but would one large sump ever be used to run multiple tanks? Say in a hypothetical situation where you were not introducing anything new from outside, like a breeding and grow out situation?

How would that work in a power outage? I think (aside from space) my primary concern has always been flooding.

This is actually done fairly commonly in saltwater, they’ll have multiple tanks Plumbed together to create larger overall systems. Cross contamination would be a consideration, so having a separate system from the main one for quarantine and putting fish through QT first before adding to the main system would be key with that. It’s an interesting concept and I would definitely do more research on it

  9. I think the easiest thing from saltwater to apply to freshwater would be the auto top off concept which already uses freshwater in reef keeping, i might actually do that come winter since I will have to be gone for several weeks and other times I’ve left I’ve come back with half the water in the tanks before (no fish loss tho). As said above, sumps allow the fish keeper endless amounts of customization for filtration methods, and also allow for the culturing of beneficial microorganisms such as copepods and the like. A lot of reefers will have multiple tanks tied together via one sump, to make larger overall systems. With nano saltwater tanks though most will go the “all in one” route where there’s a built in filtration chamber in the back of a cube shaped tank. That works pretty much like a mini sump and still allows the application of things like protein skimmers. The biggest difference I’ve noticed so far is how many more numbers reefers keep track of. With freshwater, our main concern is pH, nitrate, ammonia, and Kh if we have pH issues. With saltwater, they monitor everything from pH to alkalinity to calcium to phosphate etc. name a chemical and there’s a reefer out there that tests for it. I’ve been doing a lot of research because I want to get a mantis shrimp, and if you’re wanting to really dive in and start learning stuff, I’d suggest getting onto ReeftoReef, it’s a forum like this one but it’s been around for over a decade and there’s lots of information out there over everything you could think of and you can also post your own threads as well.

  10. Here’s the first tank setup. It’s a 5.5 gallon that houses a Nerite snail, 2 Amano shrimp, and my girlfriend’s betta Dragon 🐉 who is sick rn so I’m gonna start medicating for his eye (I have a disease post about it, advice would be great) I’m currently running a co-op sponge filter off the USB nano. I haven’t found the lid for the tank yet so I’m using my stingray from my 10gallon since it’s all disgusting from being used w/o a lid and my usual light is still nice and clean and I’d like to keep it that way. I just ordered some stuff from the co-op including some equilibrium and crushed coral and stuff to buffer since my Kh and pH are super low out the tap. I also got some water sprite to add some more plants since many died during the move. It’s been running for 2 or 3 days now, but the sponge has been cycled all this time in a bucket with the shrimp and snail.

  11. I agree it definitely sounds like a swim bladder issue. I don’t know how to treat it tho 😞 perhaps paracleanse/general cure? I’ve used peas in goldfish before and it worked great, not sure if a betta would go for it tho.

  12. My girlfriend took her betta home for a few months due to the pandemic and she was finally able to bring him to our new apartment today. A few months ago, while home, she noticed something was wrong with his eye but she couldn’t get clear photos of what it was. Well, his eye is Much worse than I thought and I’ve never seen this before, it looks almost like drop eye in Arowana (I think that’s what it’s called). My best guess is he poked it out on a fake plant she had? Idk. If anyone knows what this is tho please please I need some advice on what to do. I have fritz aquarium salt and maracyn, both from the coop, and some Indian almond leaves I can use.

Did anyone else raid their local Petco yet for the sale?  I am adding 7 new tanks to the fish room this weekend.  And I picked up the final 20 long I needed to attempt to recreate Master Breeder Dean's fry system.  Going to be a good weekend!

You can buy some crushed coral from Cory for water hardness in your new place. For your travels you could always get some battery operated air pumps to use strategically and some of the nano USB ones from Cory (buy everything from Cory) for when in the car....Maybe also start saving water in containers as you do water changes? Just some ideas. In the car you also need to worry about shrimpys bouncing around and getting shocked from hitting things.

Make sure they have plants or something to hold onto so they don't get as stressed.
