Lets begin with thats wayyyyyy overstocked for a 5.5. Having a small school (~6 of a nano species) is pushing it. An otto will work, just be aware that they are schooling and do prefer to be in larger groups, but that would mean a bigger tank.

For a 5.5 the best option for tank mates, if the betta has a relaxed personality, would be shrimp. Babies would generally turn into snacks, but if you plant it well enough some will make it.

Awesome thank you.  Didn't know if the tetras would put out that much bioload , will add another oto or two and start working on plants for that tank. It only has a basic 3 dot led under the lid, got any ideas on very low light plants ?

  2. Upgraded my daughter's beta tank to a 5.5 and attempted to add 6 neon and 4 glowlight tetras to the tank . Along with an otocinclus. Within an hour we were down 4 of the tetras so pulled them and now they're with my fry tank. Beta never messed with the otocinclus.

Any recommendation on partners with the beta or do I just have an asshole that's gonna be lonely forever lol

Absolutely all of this. Plants take awhile to settle in a tank. It's a game of patience.

If you start changing something, change one thing at a time and wait two weeks before changing something else. It'll give you enough time to start observing the effects of your one change. If you think you need a reduced photoperiod, change the lights and don't change anything else. See what happens. It's all trial and error until you find that sweet spot where you and the plants are happy, and then you adjust and give them more as they grow bigger and their nutrient demands increase.

Also, when your tank stabilizes to 0 amm 0 nitrite the plants will do better. They'll survive just fine (and even grow) through a cycling tank but they won't get 'happy' and really thrive until the tank is stable.

Thank you for the info! The 55 gallon has been setup for almost 6 months and I believe is cycled , think im having user error with the master test kit. Test strips showing 0ppm ammonia. And the 20 gallon I used filter media and a seeded sponge filter during setup a little over a month ago. Think I just need to give the plants more time like yall said

  4. So I've got a 55 gallon and a 20 gallon. Both with vallisneria ( doing the best so far ) , sword plants , anubias , java fern , and bacopa. Plants are doing alright but really not booming. Dosing easy green and easy iron in both once a week . Lights. 55 gallon - two t5Ho 46" fluval planted 12000k bulbs. 20 gallon - fluval nano planted

Parameters. (both tanks are the same with master test kit)

Ammonia. .25 or less ( have never seem it show true zero color so maybe I'm not doing it right )

Nitrates. 5ppm or less - test strips show higher

    Nitrite. 0

    Ph. 7.4-7.8

Soo..are my nitrates to low and plants not getting food ? I know you don't want more than. 20-40ppm but master test kit has never showed me more 10ppm.

Any other issues yall might think of please lmk.

So did a little reading and did a quick pro setup of mine. Really only have plants on one side of the tank,  vallisneria, bacopa, one sword, java moss, java fern on opposite side , and two small anubias . Any recommendations, pointers , tips or tricks on adjustment lmk thanks !

I haven’t really done much to this tank in several months but but I kinda like the way its grown out without intervention. It’s become a little bit jungle and a bit nature aquarium.

I just set up the same light on my 20 fry tank!  What do you have your brightness settings at ? And the tank looks great btw

  7. I've got a yellow lab that's been holding since about the 5th . She's been relocated to a 20 gallon . Still haven't seen her release any fry yet. Anybody have experience with how long she'll take to let them go?? I've read 21-36 days but I'm getting anxious!

Sounds like the tank just running it's course. The pH drop is likely due to the plants respiring I wouldn't worry too much

Once you get the sponge seeded and brought in from the cycled tank everything should be established enough for fry.

    Weeeehw. Thanks for the feedback

  9. So in another post I'm setting up a 20 gallon fry tank. Been going 3 days now. Have  used a good chunk of substrate , plants,  and other material from my cycled tank in there. Added some easy green and iron and water conditioner when doing water changes on it the last 3 days. Using a older hob filter for now but getting in a ACO sponge filter in today that I'll put in my cycled tank until I move the mom over .

    So the parameters.

    24 hours after setup

    Ammonia. 0.75 ppm. Nitrate. 5.0ppm. Nitrite. 1.0ppm. Ph. 7.8

    Today.....

    Ammonia 0.50. Nitrate. 80ppm. Nitrite. 2-5ppm. Ph. 7.4.

Def a spike and not sure if this is just the tank running it course or if I've missed something. Any help would be awesome.  Thanks yall
