  1. @skipper thanks for all the suggestions, I welcome all information on the ADF as I am a complete novice...I do have some repashy, so I may try her with some of that, but so far the blood worms were a hit and going to feed her some brine shrimp tomorrow (I don't think she ate much before, so I don't want to over feed her too soon) I need to get some tubifex worms to give some more variety...

So far the guppies eat everything I am feeding my main tank (Frozen BBS, Frozen cyclops, Bug Bites, Hikari micro pellets and Omega One veggie pellets)

Here's a pic of the set up so far...waiting on some more gravel and want to add some more plants once I have the deeper substrate (probably some Crypts 🙂 )

  2. just picked up a couple options for a feeding dish for the ADF (hoping to try to get her to figure out that's where the food is...even if I still have to feed her with tweezers)...I have two different resin options which are actually turtle/reptile water dishes or terra cotta saucers...any ADF folks out there have a recommendation on which would work better? I know I've seen tanks with terra cotta pots in them, so I figured they would be safe, but got the resin as a backup

she seems to be doing ok so far...she really likes to chill under the sponge filter which I think is pretty funny 🙂 hoping we can keep her going and then get her a buddy or two and their own tank 🙂

guppies are also doing well...the more details I get the more I am amazed that any of these guys made it...I'm pretty sure they never had their water changed after the tank was set up, all they did was add food to the tank...purchased mid July and I rescued on Saturday 😲😠😢

  3. The ender seems ok so far and all the fish are male, so no fry to worry about...I will probably look to do a ADF only tank at some point, but I am out of cycled filters for now so I need to wait a couple weeks at least (have another sponge filter in my main tank)

  4. @xXInkedPhoenixX yeah, when we rescued them, they were in a divided tank with the Guppies and the side where the frogs were had just a ton of food (flakes) in the gravel and the tank had that awful smell of a poor maintenance tank...I can only imagine the water parameters in there with that much food waste ☹ poor things...not something I planned, but I couldn't let them just be tossed in these people's back yard to suffer and die...honestly who does that!?

  5. I may add some crypts in the future...I do love them, but I don't have enough gravel (only about 1/2 inch)...more gravel on the way

Anyone have any idea whether ADF is male or female?

Nice guppies by the way. I haven’t seen white ones in awhile.

Yeah, he is really pretty - starting to look almost pinkish and in certain light he has some blueish tones - almost iridescent, not as flowy of a tail as the black one, but really interesting coloring 🙂

@xXInkedPhoenixX thanks so much, target feeding definitely worked! I don't know if he's (or she) has ever really had a good meal, so taking it slow and just trying to make sure he gets at least a few worms each feeding

  6. Here's some pics of my new rescues - two guppies (black+white one is definitely a bit of a bully, but we'll see), an endler and my new (and first ever) ADF 🙂 I got them a couple of anubias for the tank and got froggy some blood worms and brine shrimp and some sinking pellets the LFS recommended...fingers crossed I can keep him alive...hubby (who was not the biggest supporter of my first tank) has already "committed" to a ADF specific tank so he can have some froggy friends in the future, but I want to make sure he survives and we learn how to take care of him first 🙂 (but tank #3 may be on the way)

  7. Well, I'm down to one ADF, I don't think they were being fed properly (all they had was Tetra color flakes) so I'll try to get some blood worms and try to fatten my last guy up...pretty sure the Guppies are all males, so should be ok there...I'll try to post some pics once I get them settled in...thanks for all the suggestions!!! Really not something I had planned on doing, but...here we go 🙂

  8. So... I am inheriting a few guppies and a couple of african dwarf frogs (just found this out today and they are on their way shortly) I have not seen them yet and don't know the status of their tank, but want to do the right thing by my new pets. I have never had ADFs and I haven't had guppies for a long time - what do people suggest for my tank setup in terms of plants, decorations, etc?

I currently have a cycled sponge filter, a heater, some floating water sprite and a rock from my display tank in there with a thin layer of fine gravel - plus whatever shows up in their existing tank...

Any suggestions on what I should put in the tank for plants/decorations as well as food recommendations would be greatly appreciated. My LFS has a decent plant supply and frozen foods, so I can pick up anything I should have tomorrow or Monday (depending on how/where/when Henri arrives)

    Thanks in advance!

  9. yours is beautiful, I'm jealous!!!

Mine isn't doing great (not from coop) ...it seems to be growing leaves, but hasn't grown "up" anywhere (also...this was taken a couple of weeks ago, the algae is getting better, I promise...tank is only about 6 weeks old) the lily hasn't changed much since this pic was taken though... 😐 I may either just give up on it and use the space for more rotala clippings, or get one from coop with my next order 🙂

  10. Yeah, I was trying to do the pinch hose/watch thing last night, but still ended up with one in my bucket...maybe I'll stick with the bucket at least until they get a little bigger - only a little bigger than a cherry shrimp right now (all but one big boy)...after finding the one in the bucket, I had my son come outside with my big net when I poured the water out (on my planting bed 🙂 ) nobody else had stowed away, but made me feel better just in case (water was super gross)...

hopefully once they get bigger it won't be as much of an issue...most of the other fish at least get out of the way (except the Otos...they just feel like I should clean around them apparently...they don't like to leave the glass if I'm trying to clean it)...

    thanks!!

  11. So I did a small water change last night with my small Python (just the siphon, not connected to faucet)...I needed a little extra water to help with rinsing out my filter media/sponges...well, after I put the filter back together, I saw one of my small Amanos swimming around in the bucket of gross water...I scooped him out and put him back in the tank, so no harm...but...had I been using my bigger Python that I use for full water changes and tank maintenance, he would have been sucked through and I would have murdered my amano 😞

I don't necessarily need to do a thorough gravel cleaning, but I try to do at least some where I have some algae growing on it, so I could add a sponge, but I'd still like to get some of the "gunk" out so...? any thoughts?

What do you do when cleaning a tank with amano shrimp? (I rarely even see them at all, so figures I would suck one up with the siphon 😐 )

I think it looks great. I wish I could feel as positively about bladder snail stowaways. I'm holding my breath waiting for snailpocalypse after finding one in my tank this week.

I'm at least trying to think positively anyways...they did eat some pretty gross algae that had grown on my heater bracket in the QT, so I'm hoping that they'll be useful in here and once they outlive their usefulness out they come 🙂 I'm still debating on just getting amano shrimp now and taking the snails out 😐 my LFS is having a buy 2 get 1 free on anything in the store this weekend, so...maybe three amano is the better idea than a possible snailpocalypse 😉

  13. New UPDATE:

Well...not sure if we had columnaris or what, but I have had no losses (I still have one or two embers who refuse to be orange, but at this point, I don't want to medicate them if I don't know what is "wrong" they eat and act just like everyone else, so...)

I have added some PSO (tall from LFS, smaller from ACO) and some floating plants (my water sprite is now floating as well because I wanted to plant the Pogo instead) My chain sword runner is now almost as big as the "mother" plant and has since sent out two more tiny baby runners. My floating plants (red root and frogbit) seem to be doing well, and love the look of the red roots as well!

I am fighting some algae issues, but it seems to be getting better. I'm going to wait a few more weeks and if it is still causing issues, I may pick up a few Amano shrimp to help me keep it at bay. I have added the last batch of fish, and they are all loving it - my honey gourami even likes to pick at the algae a little 🙂 I don't mind the green on the wood, I just don't like the hair type stuff. I actually allowed two bladder snails who hitch-hiked their way into my QT to move into the display and they are actually making a bit of a difference, so if the snail population gets a little much, I'll get a trap, or hubs said we can get an assassin snail 🙄 for now though, they can continue to be helpful so I'll leave them...and they were free 🙂

Final fish stock (barring adding amano shrimp): 18 Ember Tetras, 18 CPDs, 6 Pygmy Corys, 3 Otos, 1 Honey Gourami and two (for now) bladder snails

Plant list: Red root floaters, frog bit, water sprite, PSO, Anubias coffeefolia, Crypt Lutea, Chain Sword, Crypt Wendtii Bronze, Amazon Sword, Rotala, Anubias Nana narrow leaf, and one mystery crypt from my brother in law

  14. Went to my LFS yesterday and picked up some Crypt Spiralis, an anubias nana narrow leaf (I know neither is super fast growing, but liked the look) and I did manage to grab some Pogo Stellatus Octopus, so I'm hoping that the PSO and Water Sprite will help suck up some nutrients and start to take off...still on the lookout for some floating plants, but may try to get some off of Amazon and roll the dice on whether it makes it ok 🙂 I still need to attach my anubias to my driftwood, I'll let everything settle in and then send an updated picture - I also did move my dwarf lily bulb up towards the front and gave it a root tab, so I'm hoping that it starts to take off...it has one small (quarter size) leaf so far, so I guess I'll just wait and see

    thanks everyone for the suggestions!

    Crypts!

YES - I want to do a whole tank filled with crypts next...I have three different ones in my tank now and love them!!

  15. My tank has been running for about a month and I need more plants to help fight off some algae issues...and to fill out the tank too. Below is a picture from a couple of weeks ago to show you what I have...the foreground plants are starting to look a little bigger and the chain sword has sent out its first runner and the runner now has about 4-5 leaves on it 🙂 (not a huge deal, but still...I am just excited that something is actually growing) the anubias (in the dragon stone), water sprite, amazon sword and rotala in the back/side are also looking decent, but the sprite and rotala seem to "gather" a bit more algae than the "flat" leaf stuff (which are being helped by my Otos)

So - what should I add? I am willing to try almost anything to fight off the algae and also because I really like how the tank is looking so far - PS...the only real non-green I have is the rotala which now that it is growing is getting a nice pink/red on the top which is pretty cool...I do have a dwarf lily, but not sure if its really doing very well, but I'm just going to leave it be and see what happens...

    Thanks for any suggestions!

  16. Thanks, Kanaplex was used for possible columnaris, after consulting here first and it does seem to have cleared the faded patches on the fish I was initially worried about...my concern/question now is whether to worry about the ones who never had any color...they seem to eat and are about as active as everyone else...

  17. @Mmiller2001 here are my readings...

ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 5 (its low, I haven't been able to dose any easy green for ~2 weeks due to medicating this past week), Ph 7, Kh 3, Gh 7

The fish in question are eating, but the female does hide a bit more than the pale male does - she is usually back there with other fish though, so not sure...I may wait a week and then try the quarantine trio - I do think I need to dose some easy green to bring my nitrates back up though
