  1. In a last-ditch effort to save my dying Ramshorn snails, I want to buy straight-up algae for them. They've eaten every speck from the tanks, and I wonder if they need it.

My 2 options are Chlorella (single-celled green algae), or Spirulina (a cyanobacteria called blue-green algae.)

Which comes closest to being the type of hard, flat green algae that grows on aquarium glass?

  2. Endler fry. I use a pill crusher to easily turn pellets into powder as fine as flour. (Flakes don't easily turn to powder.)

If you do that, aim for pellets that are high in both protein and fat. I use Extreme Nano, which is what I feed the adults. (Endler fry can eat non-crushed Xtreme Nano at 1-2 weeks old.)

Oh, I wasn't talking about MTS. I was talking about the bladder snails that were mentioned by the original poster.

I actually love malaysian trumpet snails and I keep them in my aquariums, because I can barely ever see them, and like you mentioned they love eating fish/shrimp poop. On the other hand, I had a shrimp bowl that was overrun by bladder snails and pond snails. Even just 2 of them were enough to cover the whole substrate with poop within a few days.

I totally should've realized that! Sorry.

Also, I'm new to bladder snails, so I appreciate this info.

    They generate SO MUCH waste

I hadn't yet formed an opinion about this when I had a bare-bottom tank, with a big pile of fish poo piled on the floor of it. (I didn't remotely know what I was doing at the time.) I added about a dozen malaysian trumpets, and within a day, that big pile of poo was a little pile of sand - 1/10 or less the volume of the poo. Though I don't like malaysian trumpets, I'll always keep them for that 1 reason.

I don't have Malaysian Trumpet Snails yet........ I can't decide if it's tempting or if I'm inviting the apocalypse.

This is so accurate. They're excellent for getting down between gravel pieces instead of just skimming the surface. That's a nifty trick. But.. um... they're kinda ugly, and they do reproduce like mad.

I watched one eating green spot algae on the front glass. I could see a visible trail of clean glass (acrylic) as it moved along.

    Good to know! Thanks!

  7. I recently moved most of mine into a 5 gallon, just to make them be close enough to each other to mate more. I love that they look like they're glittered.

I can't really tell if they're very useful though. They do eat leftover fish food, but I've seen malaysian trumpets turn a big pile of poo into a little pile of sand, and I've seen ramshorns lawnmower through algae on the glass.

Ramshorn’s shells are typically thinner and more delicate that many other species.  Therefore they are more sensitive to calcium deficiencies, both in terms of diet and the water column itself.

You state that they are being fed properly, but what is the condition of the environment?

    pH 7.8

GH 11 - but I have no way to know if that's Ca or just Mg

    Ammonia and Nitrite 0.

    Nitrates range 5-30.

What other info might be relevant?

  9. The ramshorns are my favorite species of snail, but I find more empty juvenile shells every day, and they're not laying eggs either.

Bladder and Malaysian trumpet are thriving. This includes a tank that's only ramshorns, and tanks that have a combo of snail species.

I feed all snails a sinking pellet for crustaceans, which all 3 species do eat.

What could possibly be going on with the ramshorns?

Hi, I edit out and retouch real estate photography for a living, if you wish you can send me the photos you need to hide cables off and I can edit them out no problem! Removing furniture/non-permanent cables isn't really missrepresentation and I do it all the time. Would be glad to help. Free of course haha.

Cool idea! I'll keep that in mind. Thank you.

At the moment, it's The Great Purge: trash, recycle, Goodwill, and a little selling. Over and over and over...

Most likely your house will be sold in a few days with the market the way it is. So declutter as best you can for now. The real mess starts when you move.😒

I hope this does turn out to be the case. I'm concerned about the actual moving for sure - but I've done it many times. This is my first experience "showing" a house. I'm a "make it work" type person rather than a "make it impress" type person. It's all so frustratingly petty.

It’s and unplanted tank for 1 baby axolotl but I can’t add anything to the filter because it’s a sponge filter tank and I have no other sponge filters only hobs

Maybe you could take some of the media out of your HOBs, and just let it sit in the tank. That's what I'm doing right now. I took chunks of sponge out of a HOB, and dropped them in a tank that only has a sponge filter.

I'm not familiar with axolotls. If it needs protection from getting bonked in the head by the HOB media, you could put something like a small rock on the media to keep it sitting still on the substrate.

  13. Updating for future readers:

I went the oven route. To get it over with fast for the snails, I did a pre-heated very hot oven, metal pans, tried to keep the gravel shallow, and let the oven maintain its high temp for 10 minutes before turning it off. (The gravel didn't burst.)

Fair warning if you also have to do it: It will reek.

  14. While still living in my house, I need to get it looking tidy and relatively empty to be shown to potential buyers. I have 4 fish tanks. Need I really say more?

I can kind of tuck away the many electric cords, air tubing, etc. But then there's the random wet net, cups, extra quart-size container that I had to temporarily put some snails in, tons of water sitting out to come to room temp for water changes... And it's not like I can just set wet things aside and put a lid on it. Hello, mold.

This is 1% of my current problems, but I assume I'll find empathy in this group. Ugh.

Angelfish are angels.... fallen angels 🤣

I've often thought the same thing! It's hilarious until it's not.

As far as them eating anything that fits in their mouth, it's worth noting that my angel persists in trying to get my HAND into his mouth. So um, yes. Very yes.

We began trimming it down to 2 or 3 big, healthy leaves to let some light to the plants below...
Eventually, it let go of the surface leaf and has been slowly bushing out at about 5 inches above the substrate for the past few months.

I've been trying to make my lily do this. (I really dislike the lily pads and their stems. Feels like clutter to me. But I like the "bush.") This gives me hope that it's going to work. 🙂
