These are very cool. I actually did a few today, myself, using stones and moss from a recent vacation. I love yours thought. I have one that has little gnats...It is an enclosed one...do you have any ideas on how to remedy this? Thanks.

what kind of substrate/soil are you using? the gnats lay eggs in soil and really thrive in damp conditions. my first step would be to let the soil dry out completely. you can then cap the soil with either a layer of sand or gravel which the gnats cannot get through to lay their eggs. the hatched flies cannot climb back out and will die in the soil. i prefer to make mine all natural and a mini ecosystem so i have a culture of springtails going in my substrate mix that should over time outcompete the gnats.

theyre the little white spots all over, super easy to culture and i keep them going in a storage bin with substrate that i pull from whenever i make a terrarium of any kind.

  2. i know this opens a whole new can of worms but i’d love for the coop to carry terrestrial plants that can be planted in the filter/pots. i get mine from different nurseries/online stores but id buy them from the coop to support you in a heartbeat. things like pothos, peace lillies, bamboo, sedge, etc that like to be wet in the roots but need their leaves dry. i completely understand why they arent sold but it would be nice.

I made a mold out of a piece of eggcrate because I was bored one weekend. Wholly unnecessary but works good, you can just pop out each square into whatever container you want.

I also like using small mason jars because you can just mix it in the jar, let it set up, then scoop out what you want to feed with using a spoon.

love the mason jar idea, i might need to steal that. i mix mine up in little mixing bowls when i plan to feed, i rarely make it in advance.

the soil is a terrarium mix that i have a culture of springtails growing in so hopefully those help keep these going. i have an idea using some branches for the third one but id love to hear any for the final. they’re about 3” in size so tiny jars.

Thanks! I did see the petsmart ones before, but they don't seem to sell them without a stand and you can't get them shipped, so I'd have to rent a truck to go get 'em … although I'll probably end up renting a truck when I finally find one anyways.

I did not see the aqueon one before, but nobody has anything larger than a 75 around me, that still helps though. Maybe I can work something out with the closest Country Max store to bring one in.

    Thanks again for the links!

you can ask your local petco if they can order one in, they have in the past for me since they carry aqueon tanks.

How often do you wanna change water? That’s the real question. It’s kind of a science experiment. I have a 72 bow front that the internet would catch fire if they saw how many fish were in it. And yet I have no issues.

i have the same experience with my goldfish tank, i dont show it on the internet 😂 although i did make a post here forever ago

does anyone have a recommendation for 2 Butterfly Hillstream Loaches? We bought Hikari Algea Wafers for them and they are not interested. We tried hiding it from the other fish (mollies and glow tetras) and they didn't eat it. Im just afraid tank algae is not enough. One of them is hiding in the same place and rarely moves from that spot, I was thinking maybe he isn't feeling well from not eating? They are both tiny (1-1.5inches)

We feed out other fish: Extreme Krill Flakes, TetraMin Tropical Granules, New Life Spectrum Thera-A, Hikari Micro Pellets and BBS.

try the bug bites pleco sticks, all of my fish go crazy for them including my loaches.

  8. ive definitely fallen into the might be a hoarder territory. i try to give my fish something different each day so they have as balanced of a diet as possible. they get pellets 4x a week, repashy 1x (sometimes 2), and frozen 2-3x a week.

back when they sold it i bought the pound of coop fry food, it didnt come with the little dispenser but i fell in love with the idea and now use them for all my pellet food. this way im not constantly opening bags and making the food go bad quicker, instead they’re opened every month or two when i need to refill the bottle

repashy  the igapo explorer is one of my favorites but i just ran out. i also usually have redrum and super green as well but i ran out a couple weeks ago. every 3-4 months i refill the little super gold container from the big one so the big one doesn’t get as much exposure.

some freeze dried foods i picked up cause they were on sale. i hate feeding freeze dried by itself so i mix these into repashy.

flake food, i feed the gvg, krill, and bb spirulina almost daily alongside pellets. not a fan of the zoomed spirulina flakes

frozen food add ins, i always add some spirulina powder, a little garlic, and some vitamins to the frozen food i feed.

bottom feeder foods: not a fan of the algae wafers on the far left (the fish hate them) or the sera spirulina tabs (these fall apart as soon as they hit the water). all of my fish go crazy for the bb pleco sticks, my goldfish swallow them whole which is a pita.

veggie pellets, the fluval ones are terrible  the omega one pellets actually have decent ingredients and i mix these with the other pellets i feed to get some more greens in their diet.

main daily pellets: mostly goldfish but i love vibrabites and the tetra color granules. i also have the fruit fly culture i feed my tanks with for some live foods.

for frozen i have: mysis shrimp, blood worms, brine shrimp, baby brine shrimp, clams, oceanic plankton, fish eggs, cyclops, daphnia, and an assortment of random foods i bought to try out like this veggie mix meant for reefs made by a local hobbyist.

Haha! Yes! Me too, I had this beast once. I didn't measure him, but my guess is that the leaf above his head is about an inch wide. He was a great subject for photography 🙂 Love my ramshorns 💚20201014_214630.jpg.3785a768123b561eaddfb327fb691867.jpg

love this photo! that’s one nice looking snail you got there. it’s amazing just how much color these little guys have.
