Love the progress updates! I always think I need some giant fishroom, but honestly one this size is way more manageable and should be easier to focus on the individual tanks more.

I have learned a lot that would apply to a larger fish room too. One reason I am adding in a version of all the systems. That and I really need them for 16 tanks.

  2. It's a tricky balance between a pure corporate forum only about the companies products, think Quickbooks, and a pure hobbyist run forum, like say a model train forum. I appreciate that @Cory is trying to find that balance. However there is always going to be confusion and these questions will keep coming up as new people join. It's just going to be an ongoing thing and confusion should be expected. The "seasoned" members should try to help clarify for the new members whenever we can.

  3. I've had they bushy nose for 7 or 8 years with a cavebin the aquarium but they never displayed any breeding behavior. I thought they were both female in fact.

Last night after cleanimg the Fluval I guess the prefilter sponge fell off. I just saw this with one pleco trapping the other inside.

    Are they breeding?

I don't know the answer to whether it is beneficial to have a day night differential. I know that when I take temperatures out in the wild there is a mild day and night swing.

The only two benefits that come to mind are:

    • a lower temperature at night would lead to a lower metabolism which would conserve energy for the fish
    • a day night temperature cycle might help regulate the fish's internal clock (but this is rank speculation)

I remember the Baily Brothers back on their old podcast talking about in their first fish room (in San Diego mind you) their father made them turn all the heaters off at night. They thought in retrospect the fish they breed then were more hearty.

  5. Well it's a rough assemble but I am not entirely happy with it. I'd probably go with a manufactured shelf if I had to do it again and just live with fewer aquariums. I still might, we'll see. I still have to add the carriage bolts that will hold the real weight, paint and so forth. The unit is also tied to the wall with joist hangers.

I don't know why I think this is funny...but they discovered it was the oldest known tropical reef fish after they had killed it. It reminds me of the graduate student from here at the University of North Carolina who cut down an ancient bristlecone pine named Prometheus only to discover it was 4850 years old, the oldest known tree ever.

I heard that Prometheus story and that person even had permission.

OMG just today I was wandering around a pet store wondering if anyone  made such a thing. Not to mention it can be so hard to read liquid ammonia tests between 0 and 0.25ppm, like is this yellow-yellow or is this yellow very very slightly greenish? Considering how important 0 ammonia is to all fish tanks, you'd think they'd make an easy to read pregnancy test for it.

Turns out there are! Tetra Ammonia Test Strips

Will do! On a side tangent, does anyone know if fry take to frozen (thawed) baby brine shrimp like they would live? I'm afraid I wouldn't have time to do live (though I'd love to).

The herky-jerky wiggling action is one of the things that really activates the feeding instinct. If Bolivian fry are close to as small as GBR then I think it'll probably be critical. It is actually really easy to raise up the baby brine and takes maybe 15 minutes twice a day. You don't have to buy all the expense equipment either.

  9. I think Bolivians are highly under rated. They are more hardy than GBRs and while they don't have as much surface area covered in color they are very colorful. Plus they have all the fun Cichlid behavior with few of the down sides.

He didn’t sleep because of the fishes. A Long Island man claims something was fishy with dozens of koi he...

Doesn't have many details but... Really?

I saw this. I can understand spending that kind of money on Koi but if you're going to why would you buy them from Petsmart?! Worse why would Petsmart let him spend that kind of money with them when they know it'll be a disaster? Maybe he has a case.
