  1. Hi everyone!

I have a planted 29 gallon with 8 pea puffers. I need a little help with algae clean up in this tank. Has anyone found any fish that could get along with these guys and eats some algae? I've only kept pea puffers in species only tanks so I have no experience with how they would treat other fish. Are they aggressive with fish that are bigger than them?

I 100% don't recommend Eco Complete. It's the worst substrate for planting plants in. Using Eco Complete was the single biggest mistake I've made.

I you want a black inert substrate, use coarse Black Diamond Blasting Sand. And it's super cheap. Just wash it well.

Thank you for that advice! I've actually used Eco-Complete in my other tanks. Can I ask what you didn't like about it?

  3. Hi everyone!

I have a 29 gallon pea puffer only tank. I really liked the look of sand when I  set this tank up a while back and I planned on only using epiphyte plants in it. As my hobby changes, I'm changing this tank to a high tech setup and I would like to play with different plants in there. I'm thinking about changing the substrate to eco-complete. I just wanted to ask the more experienced folks if there is anything I need to worry about with the substrate change. Ammonia spikes? stressing out the fish? Any tips or just your experience would be helpful!

Also, is eco-planted the same as eco-complete? Thank you!

  4. Hi everyone! I have seen this floating container that @Dean’s Fishroom uses to collect rice fish fry in his pond. I know they made a video on how to make the fish trap with a pond basket but that basket has much bigger holes. Does anyone know where I can get this container? Did he add mesh to the bottom himself? Thank you!

@Fish Folk Rainbow shiners can't handle those temps? I would have thought they'd be fine in that water. I caught what I think are gold shiners as bait fish but ended up not using them so I took them home. the lowest my pond get was probably 45 degrees and they look good.

But I know the shiner/minnow name is thrown around a lot for multiple species of fish so maybe thats at play.

@MTAquatics I remembered you asking about floating plants for your pond and if you were considering doing lilies, I figured I shared this with you. Honestly you could just throw the bulb in water without a pot and it will grow, I just like dumping nutrients on plants.

Thank you for remembering! I might try that!

Man, that is the million dollar question - biggest drawback of the ziss in my opinion, drove me nuts when it was in my display tank.  I don't have a real answer for you, but yes, closer to the waterline is a little quieter.  I tried the lid method similar to what you can see on old LRB videos where he uses lids to deflect bubbles for splashing purposes, but I didn't have a ton of luck with that making it quieter.  If you figure out something, let me know.  Maybe someone smarter than me has figured it out and will respond.  Good luck!

I thought about the lid method but unlike sponge filters, the airline isn't actually near where the air actually comes out of. I'll keep you posted if I come with a solution that works. Thank you for your help!

  7. I'm struggling to find a good floating plant for a 25g balcony pond since most floating plants are invasive and illegal in California. I've ruled out Water Hyacinth, Water Lettuce, and Frogbit. Does anyone have any suggestions? Anything you've had success with? For other Californians, am I understand the law incorrectly? I don't want to keep an illegal species. I also don't want to contribute to an environmental problem even if it's legal.

    I appreciate the help!

Every med can do harm. The problem is, this is like asking someone if going the doctor can ever be harmful? If they're being honest, sure, they could get misdiagnosed, complication with a surgery etc.

I believe if someone is worries about internal tapeworms specifically and wants to go beyond paracleanse. Research symptoms and then see if you feel you need to take further action.

Most times a captive bred fish, with the correct paracleanse treating will come out "clean". However your fish could be mislabeled as tank bred, it could have shared a tank with other fish, it could have been wild caught at the wholesaler 2 weeks ago, and then the next batch was tank raised.

So mostly it's about covering your bases, then keeping active watch.

Makes sense! Thank you so much!

The problem with a uv sterilizer with green water is that the green water will come back if you don't adress the issue. Ask yourself why do I have green water? Is it because of too much light? or too much nutrients because your overfeeding? etc. If its too much nutrients I would add more plants to asborb the nutrients that the algae is consuming. If its too much light, block out all light out for a week and then decrease your lighting schedule.

If you still wish to get a UV Sterilizer you have some good suggestions above

Here are some video that I found helpful when I dealed with green water:

Thank you! The green water was the result of too much light and not dosing enough fertilizer. I have reduced the light and I'm testing regularly to figure out a proper fertilizer schedule. I ended up purchasing a UV sterilizer to get rid of the green water short term while I figure out the balance of the tank so it doesn't come back.

Cory, in one of his videos, says that wild caught puffers are more susceptible to internal parasites, so he uses levamisole in addition to the med trio. Every so often I see tank raised Pea Puffers being sold. Maybe with those a single round of just the trio would be all right?

I always try to avoid wild caught fish. I feel like you would really need to medicate and observe more, because they are exposed to more things. Maybe I'm just paranoid though.

Thank you! I just watched that video. They are captive bred but do you think the levamisole can do harm or is it worth the piece of mind? @Cory

  11. Hi everyone!

I just setup a 29 gallon pea puffer tank. I started their med trio today.

For the next round of deworming in about 3 weeks, is it better to just stick with general cure or use another dewormer? I also have levamisole which I bought from Greg Sage about a year ago. Would that be better?

It will work in any orientation. It’s just a uv-bulb attached to a power head. As long as the pump functions, it doesn’t matter how it’s placed. You can even position the outflow above the waterline if you want. If you get one, don’t be alarmed by the “weak” pump. UV sterilizers need slower water flow to ensure that the UV is actually doing it’s job. If water flows too quickly over the light, it’s essentially useless. Kind of like how if you move your hand quick enough over a flame you won’t get burned but if you go slow you will get burned. In your tank, things need to travel through the UV chamber slow enough to be burned. Quite literally actually.

Thank you! I will have to go get one today then.
