I like female platys but I also don't want to endanger my shrimp

Honestly, I’m surprised you can keep mollies with the shrimp. Platys would be smaller than mollies, but bigger than guppies. I don’t keep shrimp, but I do keep platys. My daughter wants the mollies. And knowing me, she’s probably going to get them. 😂

It’s arriving today. A smaller angelfish died during the night. All the other fish in the tank look fine but just to be safe I’m going to treat the whole tank

Sorry for your loss. Unfortunately it may not be the last. A lot of times animals get really sick before they show symptoms. And when we treat it takes a bit to get it under control. Not trying to be negative at all but be prepared. We had the same situation this weekend with a pet rabbit. Had all the meds going. He looked better. But was too far gone. Good luck with your angel.

The population of fry gets stable after some time, predation rate is very high

I had one of those with sunset plates. One of my favorite tanks of all time. Working on redoing it again

For my platy tank, they kept the population around 30 in a 20g. All age ranges. From fry to 2 years old. It was something to see. The amount of fry present depended on the amount of cover that let them hide.

My Cherry barbs do not feed from the surface.  They feed lower mid level to foraging

So, what do you feed them? Every time I try feeding a midwater pellet, it sinks way too fast. The corys finish it, but the ones I'm trying to feed miss out. Was looking at getting some cherry barbs for the angel tank. Haven't tried them before.

I feed lightly and water tests during the first week were all good - will just keep an eye on it....just odd that those things registered after the water change.

I agree, but odd stuff happens all the time. At least you caught it and can watch it for the next couple of weeks. So, new tank then? every possibility it wasn't quite ready to go. I know I've done that before. But if it wasn't it will be soon. As you say, just keep an eye on it.

    is it as good?

It's the same thing. Minus the phosphate removers. It should help a bunch keeping your discus water pure and clean. They also make chemipure elite. which I haven't used yet

  7. Did test the tank before the water change. It’s possible both were there all along. I wouldn’t worry about the nitrate levels, but nitrites in any level causes damage. The prime will stabilize it, but you’ll need to do another change tomorrow to eliminate it. Check again before the change. It’s possible it’s not quite cycled yet. I’ve been down that road before. And you may want to check your tap water for both. Just to be sure.

So is that really bad for plants

Mostly, yes. Phosphorus is one of the primary nutrients plants need for growth. Can you use it for a short time, maybe. But for a newly planted tank, I wouldn’t. You’re going to want them to grow at a healthy rate. Your discus will want to snack on them a bit. Good growth will help them keep going. If they’re snacks and not growing well, they probably won’t make it.

Do you mean one table spoon of Epsom salt daily for 5 days ?

Oh, yeah, no. In your 5g quarantine tank add 1 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons of epsom salt, at the end of 5 days do a good water change and remove the salt. One tablespoon a day , for 5days gives you 1 tablespoons per gallon at the end. Way too high. Maybe not a survivable level.

it was a learning experience, and home for a few years

You must have some amazing stories to tell. Hopefully to a room full of grandkids. When they pay attention anyway. That’s really all you need anyway. Knowing that you have a purpose. And the stories to prove it. I had a cousin that did 2 tours in a support ship. Looks as big as a carrier, but not. He ran the store as it were. Everyone there has a job that everyone else depends on. Which I’m sure you know very well. I know you hear it all the time. But, really, we all really do thank you for your service. Most of us probably couldn’t have done it if we tried.

The downsides to the vet are $125-150, moving stress to the vet, and it might be better to have experience doing this in that case, but I just don’t feel terribly comfortable

Worth every penny. And maybe you can see how to do it next time. Hopefully they can help you get a plan to keep it in shape afterwards. That’s sometimes worth the vet visit by itself. It’s either that, or you’re going to have to take them all in when he gets friends.

I do this but not the sensor. I need to check those out! Thanks

I didn’t do it for that but it works. I went into the basement a month ago and stepped into 8 inches of crystal clear water. Didn’t even see it at first. The softener stuck on and the sump failed. Just by luck I got there then. It could have filled up to the electric panel otherwise. I’d have had my own personal swimming pool down there  😅

Ah okay, I wasn’t sure if it was fine or not as I have seen lots of conflicting info - some people says the chemical can go before the bio

well, technically all those side sponges are going to be loaded with bacteria anyway. So, not 100% sure if it makes a difference. I just try to follow that each time I reload.
