I’m considering an oddball predator tank (specifically albino bichir and leopard ctenopomas)

I just want to say I love my leopard, it's such a gorgeous looking and interesting to observe and interact with fish. It likes dense plant coverage, the more jungle, the better...prefers live food but not too fussy about it. Doesn't bother tankmates unless they are of edible size.

Anacharis does best for me if I just drop a piece in the tank and let it do what it wants.  Sometimes it floats and sometimes it sinks.  It will send roots out along the stem, but it won't root from the cut end like stem plants will.

Same experience exactly, the only way for me to grow it is to toss a little bit into a tank and hope the plant likes it there. Usually it doesn't, but the guppy tank above is the lucky one.

I was hoping that maybe once this shoot was tall enough, I could trim it, replant the top and the original would branch a bit to help fill in that space.

If it starts to really grow, it will fill the entire tank in two weeks or so without any intervention...and the roots will happen where they want to, like @JettsPapa said.

When you trim it, does it stop growing from the original stem? Does it produce side shoots?

It makes a new shoot or several new shoots near the end of the stem and/or some side shoots elsewhere, but usually it prefers to grow one very long stem. (At least mine likes to grow like that, in these 2-meter long loops instead of being bushy and pretty).

  4. Here are snapshots of two regular glass tanks and a rimless-seamless-low-iron tank. A bit unfair comparison due to the black background, but the greenish-bluish tint in the regular glass is very noticeable compared to the low-iron, in real life and especially in photos. low-iron-tank.jpg.2813f73fbc4af4691a2154be9cfe5d29.jpg

Those are great! I hope you’ve got those copyrighted, as tetra or aqueon might use them on their next glo-fish product!

Thanks :) They are not glo-fish though. These tetras were, most likely, injected with a dye, because unlike real glo-fish they've lost their colors pretty quickly and  became just pure white.

  6. Took down auto feeders and dismantled the tanks-refilling system which is a fancy name for several buckets with water and pumps in them. Set it up three weeks ago because I had to go to another city and spend at least two weeks there with possibility of not getting back home for unknown length of time. Luckily everything worked fine, only lost two guppies and a bunch of shrimp that jumped out of their tank. One tank got a lot blue-green algae and horrible-looking yellowish slime, but fishes were fine with all of it.

So I need help with some ideas on how to hold some growing media in place for the roots to grab hold for this non-rhizomatous plant.

As previous poster mentioned, black sponge is an option. I use pieces of sponge as planters, and they work well for rhizome and non-rhizome plants (crypts and some carpeting plants). I never tried to attach the sponge to hardscape, but plant roots do anchor the sponge to the substrate after a while. The sponge also collects a lot of stuff for the roots to feed on.

Another idea might be "substrate balls". Serpa Design in his video "Crazy Bonsai Waterfall Rock Mountain Terrarium" (~4:20 minutes) used them for the roots of bonsai tree on rocks. Similar idea is yarn balls like the one below, a bunch of soil tightly wrapped in yarn. Or just a black nylon sock filled with a bit of substrate (this one I had mixed success with, some plants did well, some not).

How many tanks do you have?  83

    Holy fishes, that's impressive.

I currently have 11 tanks, and all except guppies in 5g are fed once a day, in the morning. No cories or plecos so no night-targeted feeding. The guppies are fed every time I come close to the tank, 5-6-7 times a day. I feed variety of foods (live BBS, frozen worms, daphnia, cyclops, egg yolk, pellets, flakes, occasional chicken breast and fish fillet pieces, some plant trimmings, microwaved carrots and zucchinis, etc.)  with no set schedule, just trying to rotate it a bit.

my goodness is that blue a cutie!

She is, and she is also a very sweet girl! She is much younger than the B&W, but behaves more like her caring mom than a companion, pulling her back from any perceived danger... The whitey is a strong-minded adventurous female with more courage than ability so their interaction is endlessly fascinating to watch.

These two whiskered faces greet me every morning hoping for treats and tickles. It's amazing how different their personalities are, rats truly are like people in this respect. Love them both to pieces... ❤️

Same experience here, my diamonds were in a mixed tank with many different species including guppies, have never seen the tetras being nippy. Fast feeders, yes.

I would like to add 8 or so diamond tetras to my 29g male guppy tank

Diamonds might outshine the guppies in a sunlit tank :)

Now see, scenes like this are why I've been trying since pre-pandemic to take a trip to Beijing. Unfortunately, the original plan was June 2020.

It's getting harder to go to places even for locals, at the moment one has to have a fresh test results to enter the park. Boats like this were usually full of people... I hope the requirement will be lifted soon.

The issue I had with BDBS is the oil slick that seemed to be persistent. I could soak overnight after doing some rinses and I'd still get the oil slick at the top of the soaking bucket. Days of soaking and rinsing I still had some oil film that pushed me to make the call on bailing from the substrate for the tank it was intended.

I had the same problem with my coarse black volcanic sand/gravel substrate (not BDBS). No matter how long or well I rinsed it, some oily stuff on the surface of the water remained. I used the substrate anyways and it was ok... it's still in all my display tanks, no issues.

I believe from the body spots on the males and the offspring there is Endler blood in these guys as well. In addition to the bent spine issue, the male offspring are THE most sexually harassing guppies

Mine were these guys below. Sold in a male-only endler mix, but I'm not sure pure endlers could have had such tails. And similar to yours, both these and their hybrid sons were much, much more sexually active compared to other guppy strains.

The others were supposed to be a blue bodied double sword guppy strain, but they did not breed even remotely, remotely true so my guess is that one or both of the females in the trio I bought were either from another strain or were bred by a different male before I bought them. Their three drops of fry also had a ton of bent spines and huge variations in fry size.

Interesting. I had a double-sword (blue tail) guppy/endler cross with other strains and nearly all of the offspring had bent spines.

Frankly, if I had such trouble with some slow-developing colorless guppies, they would have to go live with my turtle at this point, but best of luck with sorting them!

Your coloration on the angel is pretty amazing. Very nice faint blue on the fins and captured extremely well with the photo.

Thank you. It's amazing how he (or she) can change colors in seconds...the black stripes sometimes disappear entirely, turning him into an almost pure silver fish. The pretty blue doesn't change though and only gets more intense with age, as a baby he had nothing of it at all.

I assembled the tank stand today. Set it in the temporary location.  Family came home from the stressful day and the response I get is "hm, is that gonna be in the way?"  A bit later we talk more about the location for the "family tank" and then the question becomes "well is it gonna smell?"

So I guess I need to learn to add electrical to other spots in the house or move it somewhere else. 🙁

Sounds very familiar. Every time it started with "do you really want a fish tank?" and "where are we going to put it?" for me. Yet after a while the blue angel becomes the most precious fish in the house and several tanks are fitted into a small apartment in a way that's ok with everybody. Good luck with the rest of the setup!
