I think the breeding tube is the key to everything with these rams. After staring at them and comparing them for so long, I’d bank on that as the method to differentiate.
110% Bolivian rams are CHEESE money to sex, as long as you see the vent

What’s going to be your feeding regime?
Are you feeding them?
Yea gonna have the marine science class do it, probably every day/ every other day
the teacher is probably going to come in during the summer to feed

Angels in a 29 gal is a bit of a stretch.
GBRs? Maybe do a cichlid pair on the bottom, and Ricefish on the top? You can pull Ricefish eggs, and Apistos or GBRs will spawn regularly if fed well. That would be really fun, but the eggs are a pain to pull .
If I do pea puffers i doubt I’ll get to breed them

I don’t think gbr’s would be good, to difficult, anyway Bolivians are better

Hmmm maybe them with a cichlid

ive seen honey gouarmis nearly every time ive been to both of my LFSs.

white clouds? Cherry barbs? maybe honey gouaramis?
Idk maybe gouaramis, but I want it to be interesting (class aid) and easy to find (aren’t honey gourmies notoriously difficult to find?)
-
How about filling it up with a plant that grows like a weed and putting peapuffers?
-
I don’t think we are going to be able to do shellies, the problem is that we can’t pay shipping (idk government reasons) and they don’t want to use eBay, aquabid doesn’t really have anything
anyother interesting fish that are easy and common and preferably can be breed effortlessly
Idk could we do angelfish?
Or convicts?

They’re supposed to get aggressive if they’re kept in small groups. Maybe try EBay or Aquabid.
The main issue is shipping being so expensive

No, but there are plenty, and the room is pretty warm
On 10/24/2023 at 7:07 PM, GoofyGarra said:maybe look around for local breeders or aquarium clubs?
otherwise if you're local ill donate some albino cories.
We don’t really have any clubs nearby, the closest one is the next state over

We have run into a possibly minor problem. I called today and they do have multis, BUT they are $19.98, I was banking on them being around $10 as that is what they typically go for online. This is a major issue because the science department only wants to spend around $50 on fish (understandably)
would getting 2 be a possibility? I have seen they are social fish, so idk
-
I am going to call an lfs today to see if they can order in some multis and then if everything goes well we should get them next Thursday

i highly reccomend asking your science teacher before setting on a certain fish. its possible the teacher wants to teach something from this tank, that certain fish would well illustrate.
Yup, I’ve run ideas past her, and she is basically, do what ever you want as long as it won’t break the bank and is easy

What's the size of tank? I'm sure you know this but if it isn't deep enough the shellies will likely kill the endlers
29gal, and the endlers are kinda just the acid test, to see if the water is good

So I’m setting up a school aquarium again, with actual funding from the science department! He’s what I got so far, kinda not expecting to much immediate success because it’s Kerry tiger to next week.
do far 4 endlers, thinking of shellies because they look cool
dingus is chasing a dot on the back of the aquarium 😂

In my Bolivian ram journal (link below), and it’s pretty far into it, there is a discussion about rams bullying each other. Seems a lot of people have had bad luck with TWO rams, @xXInkedPhoenixX being the only exception I know. Maybe got lucky with sexing but then again, every tank is different in size and scape so there are more variables at play and it’s hard to understand. I don’t have a good answer for you about the sick one, but it does sound like there could have been bullying at one point that drove the fish into a stress response. Prime Time has a species profile video showing “sparring” of rams and I believe he mentioned it gets worse when they are breeding or protecting eggs. I will tag some folks to see if they can contribute anything based on their personal experience with Bolivian Rams. @redfish @flyingcow @knee @The endler guy
Sorry I didn’t respond earlier, haven’t checked the forum because nothing new happening with my feesh
but yay, my male spooky always chases my female puff, recently he has become more chill with her, it’s fine, just make sure they have a place to get refuge

The LFS put me on a list to get a call when Bolivian rams come in. I think it would be interesting so see how Snoopy reacts with a few friends. Bolivians are not popular and it could be a bit of a wait, but we will see what happens.
Careful, if you get more, snoopers personality may change drastically. After I got puff (my small female ram) spooky has done nothing but chase her around
also puff chases around the peppered cories

I suggest using iNaturalist for all your organism id needs, it is a very good system that allows for community input

Could it be irritation on the fins? (The red could be due to bruising)
Although I’d put my money on what colu said

If the driftwood you used in your class project has lost its adhesion to the glass, it's possible that the hot glue was not able to provide a strong enough bond. In such a case, here are a few steps:
Remove the affected driftwood: Take out the piece of driftwood that has mold or fuzzy growth on it.Clean the driftwood: Use a soft brush or cloth to gently scrub off the mold/fuzzy growth from the driftwood's surface. You can also use a mixture of water and vinegar for cleaning.
Sanitize the driftwood: To prevent further mold growth, you can soak the driftwood in a bleach solution. Mix one part bleach with nine parts water and submerge the driftwood for 24 hours.
Rinse thoroughly afterward to remove any traces of bleach.Dry the driftwood: After sanitizing, allow the driftwood to dry completely. Place it in a well-ventilated area or under the sun to ensure thorough drying.
Inspect for regrowth: Once dried, carefully inspect the driftwood for any signs of regrowth. If you notice any recurring mold or fungal growth, you may need to consider alternative solutions, such as using a different piece of driftwood or treating it with antifungal agents.
Remember to handle mold carefully as it can cause allergies or respiratory issues. Wear protective gloves and a mask while working with mold-infested materials. If you're unsure about any of the steps or the condition of the materials, it's best to consult with a professional or someone experienced in handling driftwood or similar materials to ensure proper handling and resolution of the issues.
Thanks, a bit late
let me fill everyone in
first, the mudskippers never got back in stock
second if they did, the shipping and logistics were unreasonable. So we decided on getting crabs instead (but ended up not)
third, the teacher is getting transferred to a different school next year so we entirely scrapped the idea

nice place, especially when you see more fish then people. ( a rare occurrence).
you have a few pictures of the amazon exihibit. It kinda bothers me the tour guides always talk about the pacu and turtles and big fish, and just ignore the rummy-noses.
The small tetras are cool too!
also saltwater dominated. They have australia, and the amazon, and a few other freshwater tanks, but the rest is pretty much just saltwater.
I found it amusing the tank talking about annual killifish, it had 1 male, and was covered in spawning mops...
I love the Amazon exhibit especially those rummies who live with assorts of predators, especially when they get spooked

No it will not work, since these fish can easily max out at 12-16 inches and need minimum at least 55 gallon and bigger, and would easily munch down on some of your tetras and endlers.
According to the talk, some species (they are more of a complex than one species) only get 8 in max and a 55 has a smaller footprint than a 40b
although the embers and endlers still may be in danger

An update, sadly spooky has died, he hadn’t been doing well for the past couple weeks so it is not a surprise
all of the other fish are acting normal so it may be age related, as he was very big and most likely quite old when I got him
