I am curious though @Cory, what is the lowest failure rate you would think it would be feasible to build an aquarium heater that would retail for say $50.00?

I don't know, seems no manufacturers are really working on that. Amazon has hundreds of cheap heaters. When you're a heater manufacturer you want to sell to everyone. We were prioneering getting closer to a better heater and it was a battle as all their other customers want cheaper, so they spend their R&D time making it cheaper, not looking for better parts or more expensive designs.

Since I haven't seen it, i could only speculate, maybe the perfect heater can cost 3 dollars, or can't be done for $50. I don't really have the answer.

  2. I'd caution people to assume they are the same. Easily could be different factories. They are at least using the old software on the chip. We made several updates to it since the first one that displayed EL. There's actually a lot of options when it comes to having a product made. Like used parts. You can save money if you used parts from recycled electronics. We would never do that, but you can see this a lot in the random Chinese brands. It's not meant to scare you, but also just keep in mind, just because it looks similar doesn't mean it is. You can see in the car industry, the same exact car using the same parts, put together in a different country has different issues.

My advice is approach any brand, whether it's eheim, tetra, chinese brand, Aquarium Co-Op Etc. How do the heaters do over 1-3 years, with 10 units. That's a baseline to start from.  However, I'd say there is just as much chance of the AQQA heater doing well as a sicce, eheim, etc.

  3. I'm a big fan of the Kasa wifi timers. All my stores, warehouse, home fish room run off of them. They keep time when power goes out, can control them from all around the world... You don't know it yet, but same day you'll be on vacation and the fish babysitter will show up at a time when the lights are out to feed cause they had a busy day etc.

I dearly appreciate the 50 watt units. I have inkbird controllers for all of my tanks.  I would definitely prefer buying these heaters from the Co op, but will try the AQQA ones to replace them as needed.  The plastic pieces and functionality seems to be near identical.  No idea if they have cut corners on the inside though, but the inkbird will at least protect against overheating.

Clearly I would prefer to get the same co op 50 watt heater from the co op rather than a look alike with same functionality and know that corners were not cut to reduce cost…

I hope @Cory is following this thread and sees the affection for this unit.

I do see the affection. It was a hard choice for sure. However for our reputation it made sense to get out. The people who liked to trash talk the heaters did so daily. People who liked them mostly kept quiet except for website reviews. Unfortunately someone who has a bad experience tells many people, people who have a good experience tells a few people.

As for other heater brands that look like ours, I have no way to know which manufacturers and to what standards they were using. They could be 100% perfect or have many problems and never address them. Time will tell I suppose. If I was shopping heaters, I'd at least find somewhere with a 1 year warranty that was easy to take advantage of. On Amazon you'll only get 30 days, and then hope the company makes good on it after. If you can get a hold of them. Maybe try getting a hold of the brands customer service before buying a heater to see how that'll play out.

  5. It's unfortunately. He took a turn for the worse quick. We talked about moving him on Tuesday. I watched the video footage nothing seemed to trigger it. I did see him just hanging out at the back of the tank in the plants. People tapping on the tank to try and get him to be more active. I have disabled the camera from public view. A sad day indeed.

  6. Have pictures of the collar? In all my testing, the only thing that's slowed flow down has been a full sponge filter.  What's the flow of air in the water? any chance the pump is failing?  Can you blow through the air collar?

  7. I've been talking with Mike from Aquapros/Legit fish food about this food for a couple of years at least. In my opinion I think the food is very high quality. Mike has ensured that it's high quality for sure. My original response to him was that I thought it was expensive and would be hard sell for a lot of people. However over the last two years I've seen pricing increasing. Hikari Massivore got a price increase last month... to 29.99!

We are planning to bring on Legit fish food, even though we are developing our own foods. I trust the testing I've been seeing him do with the foods, and I like that a portion goes to Project Piaba. I am a fan of the Nano and community pellets. I convinced him to make 1oz bags of them and they should be releasing in the next couple months. The bottom dweller pellets, I haven't seen my fish go nuts over, they'll eat it, but not swarm it.

The food itself, if you can stick to the logic, is nutrient dense and should take much less food to get the fish fed, than other foods. I do think we'll see more people using it once Aquarium Co-Op Is selling it, it'll be easier for people to add on to their orders and try it. However I won't be going out of my way to promote it a ton. Not because it's not good, but because we'll be launching some of our own foods most likely this year and advertising a competitor to our own product isn't smart marketing dollars. However we sell other fish foods anyways and I believe Legit is a good food, from a good person and I want to support that.

I LOVE MARK! When I eventually go to Scandinavia to visit friends there, I want to try to make it out to meet him hopefully. Have chatted with him via YT before, real nice fella. Prob the most knowledgeable shrimp keeper there is. HIGHLY advise anyone interested in being successful in this part of the hobby to watch him before they get going. @Cory and @Zenzo should have him on for a TED Talk in the Members Only area for Neos & Caridinas.

In General we don't invite active youtubers to be the members only talk. People can go and watch their current content. It's not that we don't think they're good, but we want to provide something that isn't already available easily to the members.
