Hey Cory thanks for the tips! Yeah my water is very soft with a low ph. I’m going to try to buffer the water and see if that helps. The aquasoil is advertised as an “acid buffer” and I have a feeling that’s why my ph is so much lower than out the tap

Yeah, acid buffer means it'll lower it. Adding some crushed coral to your system or a different additive at water changes should help some. I'd try to get it near 7.

Just thinking outside of the box could you stick 24-48hr heat packs to the tank to help maintain temperature during power outages

Yeah I mentioned this in a video about prep once. They theory being aquariums used to be heated by candles. I think for smaller tanks it could work, the bigger you go, I bet the less feasible it is. I also think taking it below would have the heat rise.

if someone ever finds the time, I’m willing to send heat packs if someone wants to log results.

  3. Yeah, this is a case of not comparing apples to apples. The linear air piston pump is super powerful. and $250. Vs a $40 air pump. Also I don't use any check valves and I have the shortest possible tube between the nipple and the sponge filter.

These are all the factors that affect flow:

    Tank Depth
    Pump Strength
    Using a check valve
    Length of airline tubing
    Age of Pump
    Uplift tube length

Some things most people wouldn't realize, an air pump say sitting on top of the glass or a shelf at tank height will be stronger with a shorter airline and no check valve. Also double stacking the sponge filter, to raise the nipple you attach the airline tube to, will increase the flow as there is less back pressure.

Air will always be wattage vs sounds vs cost. You've gotta decide what you value. If cost is no concern, a linear air piston pump installed remotely in a closet, garage, attic etc will provide the most air, at the lowest sound, but at the most cost and work to get setup.

Also flow isn't everything. With the heavy flow I have now, sponge filters are getting dirty much faster, I've been turning some of them down a little it. Also remember that an easy flow with the same air pump is still way more efficient than without an easy flow and just a short tube.

Yes, but, do you have the ability to keep that battery air pump running for 5 days?  if it is a lithium ion battery air pump, how are you going to recharge it when it runs out?

My son and daughter in law are going to wake up to the start of their 4th day without grid electricity in a few hours.

I lived through the ice storm of 1998 which in my local area was much worse than this storm.  Not as bad. For Central Maine Power as a whole as it was not as widespread, but locally much worse.  We had portable generators, but on day two of the storm, there were only 3 gas stations in town that still had electricity on that could pump gas.  A generator that burns 5 gallons of gas a day becomes useless once you run out of gas and can not replenish.

All grocery stores were reopened with battery lighting and calculators at the check out by order of the governor…   Cash only….   I walked through the store… the frozen food and refrigerated cases were all empty and the dumpsters were overflowing with spoiled items.

There was not a single can on the shelf of ready to eat food as it was all sold out, no bottled water, not a battery to be had…. Crackers and cereal stripped bare.  No candles…   It was a post apocalyptic shopping scene…

Thankfully this event pales in comparison locally.  No problem buying gas, and stores open and well supplied.   So many more people own generators now than in 1998….

having an 18 hour battery back up air pump is great, especially if it is attached to a well cycled sponge filter or ugf…But, how do you recharge it if the power stays out longer?

I've been through 5 days of electricity out in the last few years. For me it was easy. Usb air pumps recharge in the car. You can also have any battery back ups. From $5 ones, to $1000 ones. I also own solar usb chargers that cost like $30, use them when I'm in peru. Set that outside during the day, recharge any battery bank or air pump.

Have a laptop laying around? It charges an air pump from it's battery. Have someone in the neighborhood who has a generator? Charge your devices there. I know our neighborhood, invites others to charge, use hot water for showers etc.

for $30, you can get this rechargable battery, with solar recharging and a built in light. It'll run your air pump for over 7 days plus plus the 18 on the air pump originally without even recharging it via sunlight. Heck I've even got flashlights and other household stuff that will charge other stuff through usb. https://www.amazon.com/Power-Bank-Solar-Charger-42800mAh-Portable-Built-Flashlight/dp/B0C4JTVBBH/ref=sr_1_4?crid=36VD7PL1EQJWZ&keywords=battery%2Bbank&qid=1703189628&sprefix=battery%2Bbank%2Caps%2C144&sr=8-4&th=1

I think as homeowners people should have some battery back up in their lives. Whether it's for camping, traveling at the airport, a long baseball game etc. As a pet owner, it makes even more sense.  A system like a basic jackery portable power station for $220 will get most families through a power outage with tons of phone charging, air pump charging, recharging flashlights etc. You can charge it in the car or with solar panels while using it. You can use it to run a heated blanket, you can use it to run medical devices etc.

  5. Check the rubber drum looking parts for any tears. You can also try bending those arms outwards a bit. That'll increase the amount of "swing" which is how much air it pushes. But it may run a bit louder. Pretty hard to see whats going on from 1 picture and not in person. Also make sure it's not an airstone getting clogged that is making it run weaker.

I just got this kit installed.  It moves WAY MORE water than the sponge filter without this kit. Very impressed. Another excellent (and INEXPENSIVE!) product from Aquarium Coop. I gotta say @Cory, you saw a need in the hobby I didn't know I had, and filled it. Now I'm not going to run a sponge filter without one of these things.

@AndyP I'm really excited for this product, most people have a great reaction to it. I fall in love with stuff, but not everyone has the same needs, but I think everyone sees more flow as better.

    Why is this video unlisted?

Maybe another channel on YouTube with videos about your products?

Most of our product videos are unlisted. If we publish them some people complain that we are advertising too much. So they live on our product pages. @AndyP

Just thought I would throw this out there. A small video I made of the flow from the new kit and how it looks. @Cory

I see a few bubbles escaping behind the outflow tube. Is that coming from the sponge filter? Shouldn't be any bubbles escaping like that, just want to see if it's installed right or if something is going wrong etc. @TeeJay

This has been going on for days and I have been told by Aquarium CoOp it's a known problem.  Whether I use my phone or desktop, when I go to the order history, it constantly flashes (only my last order).  There is no way to access prior orders.  All other pages work.  Is anyone else experiencing this issue?  Again, they tell me I'm not the only reporting it.  I'm getting frustrated.  😞

We've been working on it for about 8 days at this point. We haven't been able to replicate it on the developers side. My account also isn't having this problem. Reporting what device, browser and what steps you took to get to the problem will help us get it fixed eventually. @Herefishie

I placed an order for 2 kits and a sponge filter.

The sponge filter shipped, but the upgrade kits have not.

I like that you eliminate the need for an airstone if you use these kits?

Anyone know if these will fit on other brands of sponge filters? I currently have an Aquarium Technologies coarse sponge filter I have been running for years that I would love to retrofit with one of these. I have a Coop sponge filter also, but that's in a box. This one is running and seeded.

Did Aquarium Coop make a video about these?  I can't find one on YouTube.

The ATI sponges in my testing, you can hulkamania them onto their bullseye. But it's not a simple thing that I'd advertise. It's a tight fit but can work.

I set this one up on a medium sponge filter. It's in a 20gal long, so the tank is a little shallow. Still experimenting... The flow is definitely unrestricted without haveing to go thru an airstone. It really flows!  It is louder.

I'm guessing when ordering the new sponge filters, they have the option to either be set up with the easy flow kit or an airstone?

If you use the curved piece it'll be quieter than any other sponge filter in my testing. However in your short tank, you'll need to cut down the pipes with a pipe cutter to use the bent tube as well.

  10. 2018 is the last time we ran the markup and sales strategy. We've never looked back. Our goal is always provide value to the customer. This means hassle free warranties, fast shipping, fair pricing, better materials in products etc.  No doubt there are deals out there, just hope that they are still around and willing to help after they make the sale.

Make sure you compare apples to apples. Something like a live plant might be half the price of ours. But you may get 1 single crypt vs a pot with 4-6 crypts. Shipping may be more expensive with them than our 7.99. We also include heat packs, which is up to a $5 charge with some companies, ours are free. Theirs are 48-72 hours, our heat packs are 96 hours. We also include liners for free to help with insulation as well. All on top of an algorithm that calculates all of that real time for us. So if we are busy, you aren't at the mercy of someone making a mistake during black Friday shipping, the algorithm handles it.

We want to be the brand that doesn't let you down after you purchase. There have been brands over the last 100 years that built a reputation on making it right, we want to be one of those brands. Rock bottom pricing, cutting corners to make profit doesn't leave you the room to make it right.  We want to earn and keep your trust, not make a sale once. Our value isn't always apparent to someone who is new to the hobby or doesn't look deeper. But over time we hope that they'll find us and the way we do business and enjoy the fact that when you buy from us we'll take care of you and you can buy it when you want not have to wait for a sale.

  11. BTW, if you're going to Aquashella. Stop by Nature Aquariums or Badfish, their booths are right next to each other. Both are our retail partner stores and with any aquarium co-op product purchase, you'll get a free shirt. We had some left from older aquashella shows and gave them to these two stores to give our with purchase to hopefully help them 😉 I'll post a pic, once they get back with one for me.

  12. Link to the forum is on every page of the website in the footer. Second, you're correct that we no longer ship to PO boxes currently. Shipping battery items became a lot easier when we stopped PO boxes, less than 2% of shipments used PO boxes, where a much higher percent bought battery items. Things can always change in the future.

  13. Awesome, glad to see they are getting into people's hands. You're exactly right that the first pieces are the pieces you can add or remove. So with 2 kits you could make a crazy tall one. Or you can shorten to 2 lengths. You can go even smaller if you saw the pieces down.. Our hope is that if you had a super tall tank and a normal shorter tank, you can take pieces from the shorter one and add it to your taller one. Or if you only have small tanks, give your peices to a friend or forum member who has all super tall tanks.
