Ammonia filter pad

Has anyone used this? I always seem to get ammonia spikes in my quarentine tank even with 2 sponge filters that are in other tanks when its not in use. Im wondering if adding a bit of this to a hob will help next time.

The argument I've always heard, and often used, against these is that once they are expended there is an inevitable larger spike.  I don't know, as I've never experienced it, but that's what I was told.
