Do bio balls or ceramic rings actually perform better than sponges for bio filtration? Can I just use a large amount of sponge and be done with it?

You are going to get conflicting answers. I personally use all of them for biomedia. @Ryan Dempsey

I don’t use any ceramic type media.  My gut feeling is that the theoretical calculated surface area is dramatically higher than the functional surface area.  I suspect that once bacteria starts colonizing and biofilm forms the majority of its surface area is blocked.

Is my gut feeling right?  I have noreal idea or proof that I am…

I do however have confidence that my tank is not suffering from the lack of ceramic media..  I have canister filters with sponge, polishing pads, nylon pot scrubbies, and Purigen. And I have UGF plates and substrate…

works fine…
