Well my tank has its first signs of life… a pond snail no idea how this thing is surviving in an aquarium with 4 or 5 ppm ammonia no detectable kh and a ph of 6.4 but here’s we are lolIMG_1012.jpeg.3de795f4741628c067a7046b0656446f.jpeg

You've got the rings in there so you should be seeing Ammonia drop. A single 80-95% water change first followed by daily 50% water changes would be the recommendation and do that until ammonia is greatly increased and hopefully below 1.0.

If you haven't recently, I would double check the tap. Stuff happens. I have a friend who just found out ammonia in the tap happened and they had some severe issues crop up in the tank as their only indication.  A lot of people have been having issues this year, myself included, with tap issues.

As long as filtration is setup and everything is good to go whatever is leaching should lessen and that should start to cycle properly into nitrate. Ammonia into nitrite should happen very quickly. It's the second step of nitrite to nitrate that takes a bit.  It's a process, but getting KH, PH stable, filtration stable, that is all part of what's going on here.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

How many would you recommend out of curiosity…asking for a friend you see lol

and do you guys think a group of rams a group of gourami and a school of small Cory’s would all work together? I might just pass on the tetra/rasbora for the time being could always add them later if something catches my eye

I have 4 pairs in my 40 breeder right now. You can do 1m 3f or two pairs.

Honey gouramis and sparkling gouramis would be good tankmates for them. I’m also keeping mine with Pygmy cory and habrosus cory, ember tetra, peacock gudgeon, and some female bettas. They’re all living peacefully.

Well I figured out where the ammonia is coming from the bucket I was using to fill the tank did a big water change right down to the substrate test ammonia still.50 test tap 0 never thought for a second it would be the bucket it’s the same bucket I’ve been using for years but I guess someone used it for something in the last year or two I haven’t had an aquarium

on the bottom tap on the right tank and on the left bucket tap water swirl around a few seconds now I’m really  wondering if it’s actually ammonia and debating emptying the tank again…again lol

apparently the picture decided to be sideways, so the top is with the writing

Well the tank is fine getting going my ammonia is less than.25 my nitrite went to about .5 and is now zero and my nitrate is 10 or 20 so at this point I’m expecting it to be cycled in a few days so now it’s time to think fish.

im definitely wanting honey gourami I’m thinking 6 the more I see bolivian rams the more I want one so I’m thinking of getting one  I don’t really care to breed them so 1 is enough for me I’m thinking a bristle nose and maybe 15 or 20 dwarf corydoras I think I still have a little room but I’m not really sure what else water is to soft with to much tds for most shrimp maybe amano shrimp but I haven’t read enough to say I’ve also thought about hatchetfish since the Cory’s will be bottom/mid water for the most part ill have to see what they have available to make this decision

I’m also starting to get hairy algae so I’m probably going to reduce the hours of light a bit it’s at 9 might bring it down to 8

And the last notable thing is now there two lolIMG_1024.jpeg.704d9fac1a2f2b9de5539d910d846944.jpeg

1 would be totally fine as your centerpiece fish. I do suggest getting a male because they look better and have more flowy fins when full grown.

There's probably other baby snails in the tank already. If you don't want them, I think now is a good time to take them out.

I’m mostly joking about the snails I don’t mind them I probably won’t get snails specifically waters just to soft but if they want to breed in there I’m fine with it they are doing a not terrible job at keeping the algae off the plants lol

and the tank is cycled so now whenever I can get to a pet store I can start actually keeping fish again after a couple years yay I’m thinking bristle nose first

I personally like pest snails except for malaysian trumpets. But a lot of people hate them so I always assume that's the case 😅

My 20 long is infested with pond snails and I have a 5g with no filter that's overrun with ramshorn and bladder snails. I only have Myrio plants in the 5g and it never gets water changes. I refill it with water I get from both tanks and the snails are thriving 🙂

Really excited to see what your first fish will be

Well first fish are in that would be 5 honey gourami I was going to go with 6 but they only had 5 and 7 normans lamp eye killifish I wasn’t going to got them but seeing them in person is so much more interesting than in  online pictures so ya lol everyone is eating and swimming normally (knock on wood)so I’m happy ill give them a week or so and see what else I’m getting

There’s also about three dozen snails in the aquarium and there doing a good job keeping the algae at bay I literally haven’t cleaned anything of the glass or plants and I can’t find any algae to the point I’m concerned leaving the light on for long since the sword doesn’t seem super happy the light might not be bright enough it only puts out about 8 to10 PAR at the substrate luckily I get about an hour of sunlight every day so that’s probably helping I’m considering getting a 3.0 but running it at like 20% seems wasteful so I might just get a hygger light but I don’t know about these longevity so who knows (might make a separate post later lol)

the only other thing worth mentioning is i had a small problem with ammonia every morning because the ph was below 6 a small bag of crushed coral (like a couple tablespoons) seems to have stopped that

water perimeters just for the record lol

No Ammonia or nitrite and about 10 to 20 nitrate gh 50 ppm KH still not detectable but enough to stop the ph from going to low and ph between 6 and 6.5 depending on time of day

ps can’t get a picture right now to much glare from the sun I will after sundown

You'll enjoy keeping lampeye killis! I always make sure I have them in one of my tanks. They are great dither fish and are voracious eaters. I like watching them explore the plants and the moss and I always see mine doing the egg laying thing on the mosses but have yet to see any fry. I'm actually planning to purchase more from Aquahuna because I enjoy them so much lol

Ok so it’s been about two weeks though I’d update everything seems to be going well fish are alive plants are alive snails are chugging away lol the biggest thing that has happened is the duck weed is going crazy lol I’ve had to throw out a couple handfuls of it so far I’m seeing why people don’t like it but the novelty hasn’t worn off yet lol its probably doing so well because I have had the light on for a photo period of 13 hours a day just to see and still no real algae growth lol I haven’t touched the glass in two weeks my nitrates are also dropping inside of going up it’s strange coming from big fish in not planted tanks lol but I think that’s means it’s time for more fish my lfs just got some  salt and pepper Cory’s so maybe a big school of those so far I’m really happy with my fish choices the honeys are super outgoing and the lamp eyes are super fun very energetic and they are all over the tank so all in all very happy so far

Well it’s been a couple more weeks and everything is going well everyone is eating and growing plants are growing so that’s exciting lol  there’s a few things that I’ve noticed that are interesting to me

1 the honeys are developing very different colours patterns some are very light some are dark brown some have a stripe it’s interesting I assume it’s sexual dimorphism but still interesting

2the sword is doing way better now thanks to nabokovfan87 a couple extra root tabs (I think 5 now)and it’s really growing now even has a flower stalk now so that’s fun might have to cut off the old deformed leaves though

3 there’s a war going on at the top between the duck weed and water wisteria the ducks weed is growing so much that it’s blocking the light so the wisteria is growing out of the water probably not news to most people but funny to me

The vai basically isn’t doing anything not dead but not thriving but the java fern is almost to the top of the tank and has new leaves so mostly good

and finely I’ve got a new light a 3.0 the old light was really hot after being on 16 hours a day and even with it on that long still no real algae I haven’t cleaned the glass or done a water change in 4 weeks might do one just in case but ya pretty happy do far just need mor fish if I can even get to the store and grab some habrosus corydoras that they got in

Well it’s been a little bit everything is good pretty good and I have a couple new addition  a bristlenose pleco and a ram the biggest problem I’m having now is my nitrate has been 0 for a couple weeks so I’m starting to get hair algae on some of the plants I’ve also fed them frozen brine shrimp for the first time the killifish loved it and the new ram loved it the honeys…seemed to not understand it was food lol so far I’m super happy with how it’s going…  knock on wood lolIMG_1338.jpeg.ddd9736d3dff425a77682a7f0e813c25.jpegIMG_1332.jpeg.de774738a5dd24e56685c65f6d0f3710.jpegIMG_1344.jpeg.c6d39d6a3fa2aa563780be283e2c5008.jpegIMG_1348.jpeg.8eb72a8d6f9f6012e9b70d579166c2f7.jpegIMG_1342.jpeg.46c8bfa0a68aa7b32cde6b0b09f76e25.jpegIMG_1340.jpeg.427d2288b5775e9c11ae8d7f74a0b3de.jpegIMG_1353.jpeg.9be832c9c3e50ca37d28bc30f62d4e8f.jpegIMG_1343.jpeg.90377513dd86601a03c9b96974e87447.jpeg

It’s been a while but wanted to update this but honestly nothing has changed everything is going as planned knock on wood lol

the only thing that’s starting to be a problem is temperature it’s sitting at75when I have the heater set to 74 might have to figure out something for that

I might in the future re do it a bit the vallisneria isn’t really doing anything might just pull it and put some of the Wisteria in the substrate and maybe some other plants to but I’m really loving my water jungle IMG_1501.jpeg.f6eb3c26400a244c2e667fa5e2f232f6.jpegIMG_1494.jpeg.ef24defb06e01791a67cbee923f00c48.jpegIMG_1495.jpeg.897159d95bda9d45902cda4e1433c55e.jpegIMG_1488.jpeg.18f4d2776fbbad51c0a75ff1bc6ed3b1.jpegIMG_1481.jpeg.5ae2cdb580d5911c53f12b8871f3b6ea.jpegIMG_1479.jpeg.7a922c4e11f7b0f1f55d4a74bdcd5b2d.jpegIMG_1487.jpeg.063a6bc7fe892f9af478cf3abfbdb184.jpeg
