I am looking into getting one. But my parents are saying no, but they are so close to allowing me. (Their main gripe is it lives 20 years and ill probably be going to college in 5ish years, also the price upfront and vet/ emergency) any help would be greatly appreciated. Also what would the initial startup cost be (I have a heat lamp, tank, and lid I definitely didn’t find in the dumpster)

I had one for quite a while. I used a 10 gallon and then bought a bio-active kit from biodude.com

They stay pretty small and I never saw it unless it was feeding time. In my opinion they are a good beginner snake. Make sure you have a heating pad on the side or underneath the tank to keep temperatures up.

This was it's basic set up. I think the biodude kit was around 80$ and included the substrate and leaf litter, two succulents, and two cork hides!

What about vet costs?

I never took it to a vet, there are no reptile specialists close to me and all the veterinarians only see cats, dogs, or the occasional farm animal.  I never had any unexpected problems or anything with the boa. Fed it twice a month and cleaned the water bowl. The springtails did all the other cleaning stuff!

My parents are now saying no because of its max age

Sorry to hear that. When I was a kid, (mid 30s now) I couldn't have any pets without legs because my mom was/is terrified of snakes.

My wife doesn't really like snakes either but she came around with the sand boa. Good luck with your parents, I know it can be tough sometimes living under their roof.

Mostly because I am probably going to a 4 year college sometime (within the next 20 years) and they don’t want to care for it (while I’m away from home)

maybe aim for something a little shorter lived.

Problem is not many things are cheap and small/ easy to take care of (tri color hog nose would fit the bill but they are like double the cost)
