TheSwissAquarist
A couple of days ago, I was feeding my 8 gal Endler tank when I spotted some new fry. Upon inspection, I spotted that in the loose group of ~ 10 fry, there was one who was surprisingly gold! Here it is on the day it was spotted: And here it is today (comparison with siblings): Any ideas on how this happened? The parents are relatively normal: So what is it? Junk DNA making a rare appearance? Either way I’m quite chuffed. 😁 1
Theplatymaster
ive got no idea, but its similar to with my platy fry where most of them are yellow/clear, but there are always 1or2 that are darker and i cannot find a pattern.
Schuyler
You haven't added any new plants or anything to the tank recently have you?

The endler guy
Hmm could just be diet (probably not because that is the only one) or a slight genetic variation (we are doing genetics in bio so, yay, practical applications!) do you have any newer photos? That would be quite the coincidence if you got a rice fish or something that hatched on the same day. It'll be interesting to see what it looks like when it grows

PineSong
That's a cute little gold fry. It will be interesting to see how it colors up as an adult. I've had color variations like that with my platies, but not with my guppies--I do have yellow guppies where even the females are solid yellow, but when they have fry they are all yellow. Enjoy the suspense!

lewk
I have heard of gold form Blue Star Endlers. I think that's a leucitic version. Maybe that's what this is?

Theplatymaster
@The endler guy will have more knowledge on growth of endlers, but for me with platies, they start to develop more of their adult colors at around 1, 1.5 months, and no longer have that fry look.
