What’s this? Gold?!? A mysterious Endler fry…

Recommended Posts

A couple of days ago, I was feeding my 8 gal Endler tank when I spotted some new fry. Upon inspection, I spotted that in the loose group of ~ 10 fry, there was one who was surprisingly gold! Here it is on the day it was spotted:89EDF30E-5D90-42EF-9E97-227CCFF641B8.jpeg.cf28b2c57864b7a38624a9d5527749de.jpeg

And here it is today (comparison with siblings):A3225A7B-63C3-4B2A-9CAB-ACAF95E36FB9.jpeg.f13c5ff528dd0cc582033dd4b53426ee.jpeg

Any ideas on how this happened? The parents are relatively normal:7F22D661-2C2D-4649-99B3-B4E9851F6DB0.jpeg.75231a69110aae0c72f713a0a268566a.jpeg

So what is it? Junk DNA making a rare appearance?

Either way I’m quite chuffed. 😁

Added an Anubias 3-4 days before I found it, but it is the same size as the fresh batch of fry I saw the day I spotted it.

That would be quite the coincidence if you got a rice fish or something that hatched on the same day. It'll be interesting to see what it looks like when it grows

I looked up rice fish fry and almost all have distinct black flakes on them, also they have quite the different body plan

That's a cute little gold fry. It will be interesting to see how it colors up as an adult. I've had color variations like that with my platies, but not with my guppies--I do have yellow guppies where even the females are solid yellow, but when they have fry they are all yellow.

Enjoy the suspense!
