Tuckerdog
I’m looking to get a 40 gallon breeder for a first tank, and I was thinking of a Philippine blue angelfish with a school of cardinal tetras in a planted tank, I was curious as to the amount of cardinal tetras I should keep in a school for this tank. Theplatymaster
Its difficult to reccomend that based on plants and water change schedule. I do like this blog article though. as well as Aqadvisor.com https://www.aquariumcoop.com/blogs/aquarium/how-many-fish
JJenna
The absolute minimum would be 6 tetras. Agree with @theplatymaster suggestions as well. AllFishNoBrakes
You can obviously do whatever you want, but Angels prefer height as they are tall from top of dorsal fin to bottom of ventral fins. Consider a 55 gallon for the few extra inches in height
DaveO
One thing to consider with angels is how tall they get. My 40b with a good amount of substrate leaves only 12 1/2" of water depth. I'm not trying to dissuade you from getting a 40, I love mine, just want to advise.

Consider a 55 gallon for the few extra inches in height . . . or a 65 gallon tank. It has the same footprint as a 40 gallon breeder, but it's taller.
