Vibe's Shrimp Journal

Today I guess is the first entry into my Shrimpin' Journal. Happens to be my daughters 17th birthday! So we gave her a cat.

About 2 weeks ago my girlfriend and I went to a pet store and I saw these multicolored shrimp, they were blue, red, yellow, and just fun to look at. we decided to get one of each color. We brought them home and knowing nothing we just went ahead and let them bob in the water for a good hour or so before opening the bags releasing the shrimp into our tank. It was so cool!

The next morning... I was excited to get out of bed and go see how the shrimp look in the tank. However I was met with dismay when I couldn't even find remanence of one shrimp. They disappeared. I feared the worse, that the shrimp were eaten due to my lack of knowledge. I felt horrible, I started looking into shrimp videos and learning how to care for them, and started learning more about aquariums all together. I didn't even know about the PH and whatnot so suffice to say I am still very unknowledgeable about a lot but what I do know is that some of the things I have been learning. Have been working very well balancing.

I couldn't stop researching, I was so upset as to how could I have let that happen. My girlfriend went to work that day and came home with a small surprise she kept teasing over the phone. when she sat the little 1/2G Beta tank and told me she replaced my 4 shrimp because she saw I felt bad and gave them their own little tank, I was pumped! I started learning that the shrimp bring quite a bit of people some wile unexpected happiness. Then it hit me. I NEED MORE SHRIMP. My girlfriend wanted more fish. So, we bought the 20G long and decided to take all of the fish out of the 20G tall and put them into the long, while we were uprooting all of the décor in the tank we discovered the original 4 were alive! It was decided! We are using the 20 Tall for the shrimp!

This brings us to Saturday the 26th. I finally got the tank all setup and had another surprise. I believe that one of the shrimp that we just got were Berried, Fingers crossed! I would love to have a skittle tank and also start getting things setup to have all sorts of different beautiful shrimp like the Santa's and the black galaxies, I love seeing the blue and whites.

I would love to aspire to start breeding shrimp and get my own shrimp room setup where I can walk through and see all the different Caridina and Neocaridina shrimp variants and seeing what happens. I don't want to get too much into the filters and the equipment, I personally feel like the more natural approach would be the best start.

Awesome Vibe! I have always refered to shrimp (yes even freshwater) as sea bugs and when I had a few Ghost Shrimp I loved them, they were so cool to watch. Sadly for whatever reason I've not been great at keeping shrimp (mine actually die, so I know how you felt, so glad you found them!). I'm hoping to keep some eventually but I'll live vicariously through the forum members! I look forward to your updates!

Just wait until you think the mom abandoned her eggs only to notice a tiny little speck in your water changes!

Local tip, a lot of people pay good money to get alder cones to put in their shrimp tank to provide tannins and to grow biofilm. I'm our area alder trees are all over the place (my dad jokes that they are named that because someone said "Look at all der trees!"). If you do to a park or a beach you'll probably be able to find a few trees and be able to collect some free cones (if all this wind hasn't knocked then down).

Sounds like you've got a fun "Skittles tank" going on. How many do you have after your girlfriend got you some more?

Hi Vibe,

I added 10 cherry shrimp to my 10g community tank and was mesmerized by them!! First day they were out and about and it seemed neither Jeffrey the Betta or the neons were interested. Next day, all gone!! Could not find them. Fearing the worst I thought they had been eaten. 2 days later I spotted 4, they disappeared again. So until half an hour ago I had not seen any in 8 weeks. Then one popped up again. I think they are incredibly good at hiding. 🙂

Well… Today we decided to go check out a local aquarium store we heard about. Found myself a male and female crystal shrimp! Now we have 12 total! Also ordered some very nice Caridina shrimp that should be here soon I can’t wait to share them!

I found ours hiding in a compartment of our goofy airaiter and then figured that it would be better to stitch to just a bubble stone! I hope you see more soon!
